The "Time to Triangle" stuff from the Cerny talk today was pretty interesting too I think:

http://www.computerandvideogames.com...-claims-cerny/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJW5O...ature=youtu.be

1-2 months to getting a PS4 game build running Vs 6-12 for the PS3. That's got to behugefor developer costs. I've said this before and I honestly think developer costs are going to go down with this next generation, not up, due to everyone being on X86 architecture. I have really high hopes for this generation with everyone having to do a lot less work than before to get shit running and having more portable and scaleable engines. This is also a huuuuge boon to Indie developers.

I think there's a blindingly bright future ahead for games and there will have never been as good of a time to be a gamer than the next few years (regardless of what platform you choose).
Yeah I've noticed a lot of devs when talking about games that are coming out for next gen say that it's been in development for 1year/1.5 years. For instance Titanfall said 1-1.5 years in development and look how polished that is looking already. Definitely a HUGE positive if games take less time to make. Less cost = more innovation.

dev costs may be mitigated but art costs will continue to climb. I do agree that it's a great time to be a gamer.

I heard that talk was great, will def try to watch it today.

All these big pubs/devs going to a single engine approach is going to pay off in spades IMO. The tools will get better and better allowing devs to really work on gameplay and content instead of building tools for every game.

Its not really the fact that its x86, very few console developers program in assembly/opcode. Its the fact that there are thousands of man-hours worth of tools, debuggers, optimizers, sample code, engines, etc already optimized for x86 and DX11 that will help out a lot, plus porting from ps4 to xbone to PC will be fairly trivial and could even be the same binary for indie titles and many games.

There is still going to be an issue of PC engines having a split main memory/GPU memory, xbox & ps4 having shared memory, xbone having 5GB available of GDDR3 + deciding how to bet use esram cache, PS4 having 7GB GDDR5 available that will make the top end titles decide how to best optimize a bit tricky. Still, the differences are really tiny now, and the best part is the next generation of consoles in 5-6 years should be 100% backwards compatible, assuming x86 keeps on increasing performance and nothing insanely new comes along. You could even see interesting stuff like running PS4 and xbone games on PC emulators.

To me the most ironic thing is that developers like Ubisoft and EA who have been porting everything to PC over the past few years will have a huge advantage over those developers who developed only for ps3 or 360, all that specialized knowledge of Cell/etc isn't worth much anymore.

I wonder how much DirectX vs open-gl is going to come into cross platform performance. PS4 is using open-gl right? I cant imagine microsoft licensing DirectX to them.

With DirectX being dead now and no one seems to know what Microsoft is doing to replace it we may see a shift towards more open-gl. I can hope right?

Presently the XNA Game Studio is not in active development and DirectX is no longer evolving as a technology. Given the status within each technology, further value and engagement cannot be offered to the MVP community. As a result, effective April 1, 2014 XNA/DirectX will be fully retired from the MVP Award Program.
Though after googling for that article they seem to have backed off of that statement as far as DirectX is concerned so maybe calling it more in "confused mixed signal" territory right now would be better than "dead".

DirectX APIs went opensource a while ago, PS4 supports all the DX11.1 APIs and adds a few. OpenGL will work fine too across all platforms, so its basically devs choice which they want to use. There are more directX tools and classes and shit so more DX developers, but really neither platform has done much in years I think as far as new tech, need a new young carmack to come up with new ideas.

Definitely, $100 is the #1 most important factor for the general market.
#2 will probably be marketing, and specs play into that.
#3 will likely be supply.
1) Yeah, price is going to be biggest for most people

2) I think MS has been better at marketing than Sony in the past, we'll see this time. I don't think specs will play into shit because honestly the public doesn't understand the details ofwhythe PS3 is [potentially] faster and Sony wont be able to educate them in a 30 sec spot.

3) Sony will definitely get a big boost from larger supply, but Xbox being sold out everywhere for the first few months will definitely drive some consumer idea that it's great and must-have. Just like the Wii did.

I guess someone read this forum, it almost seems perfectly directed at Sean and Gaige.

Xbox executive Albert Penello says flaunting hardware specs is "in some ways meaningless." Speaking to OXM about Sony's hardware reveal, Penello says "The problem is that Sony decided to go and and publish a bunch of numbers," which isn't why customers buy new consoles.

Players want "to play great games and have great experiences. I feel like our games and experiences are going to be every bit as good, if not better, technically."

Penello says of Sony, "As a matter of fact, they actually go out and they talk about how proud they are about their off-the-shelf parts," The Microsoft senior director says. Penello proceeds to say, "Our guys'll say, we touched every single component in the box and everything there is tweaked for optimum performance."

For Penello, the conversation about which box has better technical guts isn't "going to matter" because, as it was in the previous generation, "it's a pointless argument because people are debating things which they don't know about."

Well, I meant that the "specs" will matter in that they will market it as the "most powerful" hardware available. They've already done this on TV with Jimmy Fallon. Microsoft has been better in the past, but they've absolutely sucked shit at it for the entire start of this next generation.

PS4 uses DX11 - and in fact has been stated to have 3 extra DX operations not in normal circulation yet or some such.
