Aware of their existence but how many mainstreamers pre-order? How many of them pay attention to supply shortages? I think history speaks for itself when it says that people will walk into the stores on release date and think they can just walk out with one.
what you are really asking is: will there be a massive profit opportunity for resellers? I doubt anyone can give you a real answer right now, but imo the best guess is still no. Here's my reasoning why: amazon had both xbox one and ps4 launch edition pre-orders for well over 4 weeks, never once "running out". They only stopped taking launch orders recently. They have to be working closely with both Microsoft and Sony, since they (online) and Walmart (physical) are pretty much going to be the big volume movers.
Sony and Microsoft most likely used amazon to gauge demand and have ramped production up or down based on the data they collected over that month, and are now focused more on manufacturing enough for physical stores like Walmart, Best Buy, Gamestop, etc.
There is also certainly going to be a certain % of amazon pre-orders that are cancelled, amazon probably has a really good estimate based off WiiU and game pre-orders (Battlefield 3, Call of Duty, etc).
Either way it doesn't hurt to keep any extra pre-orders until the last minute, but I would be very surprised if each console is not easily available this holiday at any store in the hundreds. Neither is selling at a loss to the manufacturer, neither has an insanely complicated architecture (except for maybe Microsofts ESRAM, but we haven't heard anything in months about that), AMD's fab company - Global Foundries - has 10+ fabs worldwide to crank out the APU/GPU, there is no shortage of any of the components, and the Chinese manufacturing and shipping lines have been running smoothly all year with no other product consuming demand.
If you really want to gauge the demand keep an eye out on eBay "already sold" sales, as far as I can tell it still continues to trend down (throwing out the "scammer" buyer fakes).
