Twitter / yosp: Had a very good discussion ...

Possible that lolJpn just didn't realize that DLNA was that important to some people?

I still don't understand why they didn't think it was worth trying to make PS4 a media centre of peoples set ups. I think that's one of the few things Microsoft is doing right. Making everything accessible from your Xbox.

I'm just glad they saw the reaction and have already began to react. Took Microsoft weeks to just even get it.

Well, let's be realistic here. It's still very much a "media center" for the vast majority of people. It plays all the Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, etc. It plays DVDs and Blu-rays. The only major thing it's really missing is music services like Spotify.

I don't personally use DLNA, but I can't think of any use for it beyond streaming pirated stuff from my PC and I have much better ways of playing that content.

It's good that they're responding so fast, but I think some people's outrage over missing that kind of service is a little overblown.

I know two people who use their PS3 for streaming from NAS, so for them it's a problem. Leaving the PS3 there and having a PS4 next to it is an option but I can see the objections to having two boxes under / next to the TV, two power leads, two HDMI cables, and two sets of remotes / controllers, and all for no good reason.

Moral of the story: taking something away never goes down well.

(although I can understand no CD playing as IIRC CDs need different lasers from Bluray / DVD, so Sony can save a few pennies on each console)

I know 0 people in real life that use it as a media server, so it's probably a minority. The fact that most people here were using it as one is probably closer to the fact that we're all extreme neckbeards.

Ps3 also has that copyright protection on it because of the blueray that causes allot of movies to be blocked.

Thats why you see allot of "Is this PS3 compatible?" in the comments of allot of torrents.

I don't think most people here even use it as a dlna server, just a vocal few. I personally just hook my PC up to my TV via hdmi because fuck streaming video players. If I did though I'd just use my TV's built in stuff for it or keep my PS3 around, since I'm going to have to keep my PS3 hooked up for another 2 years anyways probably due Japanese PS3 games still coming out for a while and not being cross-gen.

Probably going to break my desk if Persona 5 is announced as a PS3 game and not a PS4 title.

On a totally tangentially related note, does anyone have some articles or technical documentation or something about how optimization works for consoles, and how the switch over to x86 is going to affect that in the long run (if it somehow makes it so that there is less of potential gap between launch games and end of cycle games)? Or even like an educated explanation.

Btw, here's a little bigger (1TB) alternative to the WD Black drives that's been passed around on Neogaf:HGST Travelstar 7K1000 Review: A 1 TB Notebook Drive At 7200 RPM - HGSTs 1 TB Mobile Drive, Spinning At 7200 RPM

Amazon.com: HGST Travelstar 7K1000 2.5-Inch 1TB 7200 RPM SATA III 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0J22423: Computers Accessories

It seems to be about on par with the performance of the WD Blacks, but I can't personally speak to their reliability (which is really important to me). It also only has a 3 year warranty instead of WD's 5 year.

Question about those links. The Toms Hardware link references the 16mb cache version of the drive, and your amazon link is for the 32mb cache version of the same thing.

Are they the same thickness, or is the 32 a little fatter? If that's the case, we're forced to go with the 16mb version (and save 31 cents in the process!)

Yeah right dude, if Microsoft had announced the same features missing you'd say what a huge mistake it is and how they've just lost the console war. You're extremely biased at this point.

This is a pretty huge misstep on Sony's part, and gave Microsoft quite a bit of room to work their reputation up with forum nerds.

No I wouldn't, because I don't really give a fuck about those features at all. Microsoft could completely leave them out and I would not give a shit. I buy video game consoles to play video games. I don't use any of my consoles foranythingelse. Never have, likely never will.

Sony leaving out being unable to play music shit is pretty shady and I've said as much, but the media-server crap is a tiny subsegment people and it does most of the Streaming Services that the majority of people use the boxes on the non-gaming side for anyways. There's few people legitimately using media server programs and it's mostly for playing pirated stuff.

They're not going to do anything about it at this point. For one thing, it's too late to include it for launch. But much more important is the clue dropped in the original article - They want you to use Sony's subscription based music service, and most likely a movie service coming up. That's the exact same reason the Apple TV doesn't do DLNA out of the box, and never will.

That decision was made by suits, not designers. Those suits won't make a U-turn on that decision unless they are losing the console war, or their proprietary streaming service bombs and gets shut down.

The tweets regarding the subject are just pandering to pissed off fans, to give them hope that it will be introduced at a later point. It won't.

It shouldn't be any fatter. Product page says it's another 9.5 drive, so it should be okay:Travelstar 7K1000 | HGST Storage

If anyone has any experience with the reliability of HGST and the Travelstar drives I'd appreciate hearing about it. They seem like a better buy than the WD Black atm (Similar performance, larger size), but I have no idea how they hold up under use.

While removing those functions seems like a step back, it personally doesn't make or break it for me. I haven't messed with pirating in ages and all my music now comes from pandora/spotify. I still have little ones in my house so I will actually be leaving the ps3 in the living room accessible to them and putting the ps4 upstairs where the computer is. That way the kids can continue to shove their grubby scratched up dvds into the ps3 and leave my ps4 alone until they are (literally) in their teens.

Still super excited for bf4 and watching that eurogamer clip of killzone was enough for me to spring for that as well. So I feel good about preordering the ps4, and am now looking forward to two titles to enjoy as well. My bonus paid for this anyway so I think if I cancelled now I wouldn't have the extra dough for another 6 months.
