Don't you think that's a reach without knowing exactly what happened? I didn't think this topic would follow the path it has and didn't think that giving a detailed framing of the situation was necessary.

They did screw up and they knew they did. They also knew that killing the goblins as quickly/quietly as possible and then getting the hell away from there was priority #1. Based on our conversations, there's no reason for me to believe they wouldn't have been successful. Physically going through the motion of rolling dice to hit and deal damage wouldn't have changed the outcome, at all. The only risk was being heard or seen by someone other than the goblins and the rolls favored them.

It also helps that the slave pens are in an area of the city that is essentially a farm and sparsely populated. Which is why they chose to take that path in the first place.
Yea I think you handled it really well. Players were allowed agency and part of that was an excellent choice. They spent a resource on the silence spell for the mistake by choice not forced. 10/10 no notes

Also, guys - I have a pdf for literally every official and 3rd party D&D book, boxed set, module, etc. from 1st edition forward and really don't mind taking requests. I also have a lot of Pathfinder, but it's not complete.

You just need a method to receive the files. Some of them are hundreds of megs in size.

I also have a MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSIVE library of maps. Not that random shit you can Google, I mean the high-quality shit you have to buy. However, I do have an art style preference and the cartoony shit isn't for me. if you Google Heroic Maps, Beneos Battlemaps, Dynamic Dungeons, and Advanced Battlemaps you'll get an idea of what I have. I've been a patron of 15 map-makers every month for years now and the amount of shit I have is borderline retarded. I had to buy another SSD to store the shit.

Music, ambient sound, and effects as well, but I'm not getting in to brokering that shit. PDFs and maps is all I'm willing to share with you fuckers.

Google drive maybe?

I've got I think all the official 3rd. All the 4th and all the 5th.

Only got some 2nd pdfs
In most cases, the quality of 3rd party stuff is a head and shoulders above official content, but that's mostly true of 5e. Official 2e and 3e has some amazing products (peak D&D in my opinion), but there are also some complete turds in the independent arena.

I considered opening invites to my drive, but that makes me really nervous. Maybe that's irrational.

So quick story, that I'm sure turn into a long one lol. I'm doing my Halloween event for this year. And it'll be a one off. Where we have to figure out why there is some kind of strange time dilation nonsense going on. So we'll eventually make our way to a corn field where we meet with a sentient but sensible scarecrow.

Then we'll meet a gold dragon thst we befriend. And we go on to strange dungeon she only discovered the night before but isn't strong enough to handle alone.

In there we'll end up fighting the headless horseman. A dullahan who's gotten so old and strong he remembered his name and has imprisoned a favored soul of grummish. Who is the ork shaman that controls this dungeon.

But the teist will be that we will pay our regular lvl 18 to 22 chars. But also at night we'll be magically become goblins. And we'll transverse the same dungeon in a different time period as those goblins.

Eventually we'll have to accomplish the same goal as each party. And then have a final fight together.

I'm going to surprise the players with a 2nd set of goblin character sheets when we come to our first night's sleep.

I'm going to do every 15min will be one day or night cycle. So we'll ne swapping off from one group to thr next.

I got a big skull egg timer with red sand to be the sands of time.

How are you handling Hit points and rests? I'd assume a different pool for the night and day characters, but do they get the benefits of a long rest in between?

I want to get an opinion from those of you who are players.

Recently, I started completely skipping combat against creatures that pose absolutely no threat to the players. I still run combat against weak creatures that have some mechanic that could be a problem, but if the creatures pose absolutely no meaningful threat to the players, I simply narrate how it plays out.

For example - my group stealthily infiltrated an area heavy with goblins, made a mistake, and got discovered. They're level 14 so even 20 goblins pose absolutely no threat to them. The group attacked and I basically narrated them wading through the goblins like a scythe and after they had killed a dozen or so, the rest scattered and/or surrendered.

Combat like that is a HUUUUUUGE waste of time because the result is all but pre-determined. I get every once in awhile players want to feel like a god and kill 5+ creatures in a single turn, but how would you guys prefer having situations like that handled?

This is similar to things my DM has done. I love rolling the dice, but I am OK with it. We are not murder hobos. When we see a random encounter on the road, if we can avoid it, we usually will. The first couple of sessions, we progressed further than the DM intended because he was like, "well you were supposed to have all these fights ....' We had a museum heist once that was supposed to take a couple of sessions due to the fights with night sentries and searching for secret passages, etc. Instead, we charmed and seduced everyone at the party when we were casing the joint (we had 2 bards) and just stole the maguffin in broad daylight.

Your situation sounds a lot like one time we were going through a kobold camp. Rather than make us fight them all like the book suggested, we walked in like we owned the place. Bluffed them. Had to kick one who got uppity. Threw a hunk of meat at a group who looked like they wanted to get uppity and that was it. As was mentioned, we were given some agency and skipped a meaningless fight our way. I like the way you handled the one you described.

Nah totally understandable dude.

And yes the 2e and 3e stuff was so great.

4e I don't think anyone did any 3rd party stuff. Somthing about them not being allowed to I think?

So glad you asked!

So their regular chars and the goblins will be completely separate characters with their own hp pools.

And and every time the party goes to sleep. No spells or hp will be restored. As if they aren't even resting at all. Bit some magical force is making time move so fast they are becoming physically exhausted.

As a rule all if our games take place in a single day. Unless I specifically do somthing as a mcguffin.

Like right now they are in chult in search of the soul monger. And are losing max hp every night. Our lower level chars that have been resurrected before may die if they aren't careful.

And for those that have never been resurrected and aren't on the same time crunch. Well Larloch himself has cursed the entire party. And given them 3 fort nights to find somthing for him. Or the purple wurm large that's in stasis in a flask that's has a shadowed piece of our soul essence in it will awaken and devour us. Killing us.

He showed us how it works by maiming our lvl 22 paladin. He cut off his left arm.

I gotta say, 15 minutes seems short for day night cycles. It's probably going to happen mid fight more than once.

Are the characters the same class day and night?

Well I'm saying 15min. But since no one will pay attention. I'm sure I'll be doing it at different intervals that are about 15mins.

And if it isn't working. Then I'll cha ge the timing or circumstances on the fly till it works. And they'll hopefully be mone the wiser. Cause I'm 99.99% sure none of them will time me lol

At night they'll be a totally different class. Silly goblin work horse classes.

And then at the end of the night after the big face off against the goblins will shrivel up into little egg roll sized wooden totems. Which three guys will be able to summon the goblins they played as a kind of follower once a day.

I'm also going to have the dullahan drop a charred wooden shield with a visciohs smile carved into it. Which cackles randomly and th user can will the face to light up as if a jack-o-lantern. Also it'll give the user an encounter power of the Frighten. Which does exactly what you'd think.

I say randomly. But that's at my discretion. And for them to find out lol
Just make sure it has nothing to laugh about.

For instance, Guy walks into a bar and sees a horse in the corner looking very sullen and crying. Bartender says they're offering free drinks for the night to anyone who can stop the horse from crying. So the guy goes over to the horse, whispers something in his ear and the horse starts laughing. Guy has a great night drinking for free.

A month later he comes back through the same bar, sees the horse in the corner still laughing his ass off. The bartender recognizes him and says "hey you're the guy who started him laughing aren't you? Well now we're offering free drinks to anyone who can make him stop". So the guy leads the horse into another room and comes back a few minutes later and the horse is crying again. He drinks for free for the night but the bartender insists he tell him how he's doing that. He said, well its simple. To get him to laugh, I told him i had a bigger dick than him. To get him to cry again, I showed him.

See, I figure a steady diet of terrible jokes like that will ensure the shield has nothing to cackle about.

For up to 25mb. Apparently, after that it automatically uploads it to my Googledrive and embeds a link to it. I've never done it so I guess we'll just have to try it and find out.

If you want something PM me your email and what you want.

PSA: Try to be considerate of my time. I genuinely don't mind sharing with other players, but if you send me a list with 100 things...well, you get the idea. I also have every official 5e D&D book for Fantasy Grounds and no, there's absolutely no way for them to tell you have sailed the high seas.

Do you have a list handy? Even just a screenshot of the directory would help.
