I found that whenever they do characters on TDS it is one of the most predictable and least entertaining parts of the show. I'd kinda rather just listen to Jon rant about something. And sure, super rich elitist guy was one of the better characters -- but that is only saying what it's saying and I wouldn't call it entertaining.

I mean Colbert just used his character as a gag and to frame jokes and to childishly mock fox news (which is the best and highest form of mockery), there was never really any depth to it either.

I can just see that if they went that way it would feel like, "Oh. He's trying to do Colberts thing. And not succeeding at it."
Hodgman has been doing it for awhile. It was pretty great in Bored to Death.

The Price is Right died with Bob Barker, as did the spay and neutering I can only presume. The same will be true of The Daily Show.

Black and Handler have some venn diagram overlap with stewart's appeal, but no. I hadn't considered Norm.

Chelsea fucking Handler? Are you shitting me? Fuck no.

Yeah, I'm sure Steve Carrell will leave his successful movie career for TDS.

List is a combination of the most obvious options and the most stupid stupids.

Dunno, having a pretty cushy job for salary near John's I could see attracting Carrell - John's salary was $25-30m a year - he was getting around $3m/year for The Office - his acting numbers I don't see but I'm sure $25-30m/yr is comparable.

Sensibly Viacom will go for someone that they can have host and save money, but if they decide to keep the budget set... Carrell seems doable.

But is money something that would even lure him? At the height of The Office, he was makingmore than quarter million per episode, and his recent Oscar nomination is undoubtedly going to allow him to earn higher pay for movies. The guy has to be living pretty comfortably to the point where, if he doesn't want it, money isn't going to be much of a factor. Money wasn't enough to keep him on The Office, after all.

He never really struck me as such, but many actors reach a point where they start caring less about money and more about their craft (though money never goes fully out the window obviously). Carrell might have reach that point with his Oscar nomination.

Yea, that's how he came across on Pawn Stars the time he came through - he was haggling backwards. "Oh, I see you've got that marked for $500, lets see if you can talk me down from $3000"

Why would any A list movie star swap over to the daily grind of a 4 day a week show? Even when he was on the Office they only worked half the year. You can do a movie in three months with a month of press and promotion and live your life the rest of the time. Especially when they are nowhere close to having a swoon in popularity.

He was there purely as a planned promotional thing for Burt Wonderstone. Nothing there tells you anything about him at all.

Steve Carell isn't going to the fucking Daily Show, it's stupid to think it's even a possibility. He's rich as fuck, he's becoming an A-List movie star, and he likes to spend time with his family.

A-List don't make much more than Jon did though - I think it's a remote possibility, mostly because of the "less time with family" issue - I don't think the money is too different.

Jason Jones Leaving The Daily Show:

Jason Jones is leaving The Daily Show to star in the semiautobiographical TBS sitcom he and Samantha Bee co-wrote. (The untitled family comedy earned a ten-episode pickup today, according to THR.) Jones confirmed his exit on Twitter this afternoon, writing, "For 9 & 1/2 years, I have worked at one of the greatest TV shows of all time. But... It is time for me to go." Jones and Bee, his wife and fellow TDS correspondent, will write the pilot and serve as executive producers for the series, but Bee's future at The Daily Show is unclear. She's not in this new sitcom - Natalie Zea plays Jones's wife - and she's TDS's longest-running correspondent, and thus in the running for the anchor seat Jon Stewart is about to vacate. Comedy Central did not yet return a request for comment, but we hope their comment is "change is terrible and we will do literally anything to keep Samantha Bee."
