The Dallas Cowboys Memorial (2015 Off-Season) Thread

Look, they are going to keep Wilson and probably overpay him to boot. He is the only likeable guy on the roster with national name recognition. But he is a running QB and their shelf life is actually shorter than that of the typical RB. Usually at the three year mark, they either learn to be a good pocket passer and supplement that with the occasional run or they tank. I think he is more accurate than most running QBs (I did watch him as a Badger), but his passing skills are mostly unremarkable and bolstered by having one of the best active RBs backing him up. Take a good look at his numbers when Lynch was dinged up and tell me I am smoking crack. Hell, the Seattle Offense was not exactly blowing the roof off of anyone good when Lynch WAS in there and it took a full scale coaching meltdown by GB with a decidedly Defense for them to even GET to the SB. His accuracy is not where the elite guys are and his deep game consists of chucking it up and hoping to draw the penalty or that his wideout is taller than the other guy. And that's easy to do when opponents sell out to the run every play. A lot of QBs out there can do that if you give them Lynch to back them up.

But, I predict that a full on Flacco will happen with him and that the Hawks will franchise tag Lynch instead, because when you win a SB and are the only remotely likeable guy on a team, you tend to get a few extra bucks in your contract. If I were Seattle, I would give him a contract very similar to Kaeperbro's (heavily incentive based and team friendly), tag Lynch (he has maybe 2 years left in him anyhow and has to play well to pimp his gold gear bs), and spend the money to keep their Defense intact. Lynch is going to peter out and you cannot do anything about it. That Defense, especially the secondary, has the potential to be amazing for a long time and you can win a lot of games with an average offense if your D keeps everyone down to one or two scores. From a purely logical view, Wilson is the most expendable piece of the equation and if they overpay him it will make retaining the D a lot harder. This is especially true coming off that kind of a loss with a lot of key contracts to work out. Trust me, as a Packer fan I know this situation far too well.

A part of me would ~love~ to see Seattle going all Phil Emery with Wilson...

Do you think the rest of the Legion of Boom are not going to want to renegotiate for more money ahead of the end of their deals? Defensive backs are some of the most greedy and fickle fuckers around and with good reason. Ones who can actually back up their bullshit (Sherman is in this category) are rare and worth the investment. And I have seen enough teams picked apart after a loss like this (including my own when Holmgren shit the bed against Denver) to know how this will play out, especially with the general attitude of these guys. If you guys don't get ahead of this and secure all the key parts of the D with long term deals, you will go from lockdown to "bend but don't break" faster than you can say Chicago Bears.

About running backs, 30 is usually when the abuse of the position starts to set in, especially for blocking backs and power runners. Having a great QB can extend the lifespan of a RB, of course, but even then you really get maybe 3-4 good years out of them. AP seems to be the lone exception to this in the modern era, though you could make a good case for Watters, too.
