Arthur Bryants actually closed down voluntarily for a week or so last month for the same thing. It was surprising that someone reported them to the health dept in the first place (I grew up thinking that was just the risk you took for good BBQ), and it was even more surprising that the health dept gave an inspection the very next day. My mother still to this day refuses to go to the original Brooklyn location because she says that she saw a rat waddle past the door on the sidewalk while she was there eating once (emphasis on waddle) and she still won't let that go. That had to have been a couple of decades ago now, at the very least, so I've always looked at the potential health code violations associated with some of these places as just the way things are.I know. I used to go to the old Smokestack on Prospect. Not the best neighborhood, but the pits were filthy, and smoked good product. Unfortunately, the rest of the place was filthy as well and it wasn't uncommon to see a cockroach or two.
I wouldn't let that deter you, just try to go there early. I'd say that if you're wanting to go to 47th Ave then get there a little before they open at 11am. Might still be a line when they open the door but /shrug.I'd also like to try Oklahoma Joes, but I hear the line for food is crazy long.
You should have, but you want burnt ends, not ribs. Well maybe some ribs too, but don't miss the burnt ends.Should have made a pit stop in KC for some ribs during my move to CA. I've heard nothing but perfection about the BBQ there.
Philly Cheesesteak pizza is THE FUCKING BEST chain pizza EVER. I swear it's the only thing I'll order from them but my god it's great.I just ate Dominos for the first time in 20 years and have to say it was the worst pizza I've ever had. I don't remember what the old recipe was like but I shudder to think of it if this new stuff is considered an improvement. It was way too greasy, the crust was soft and tasted like raw dough, and the sauce had no flavor.
I miss their old school plain cheese pizza sometimes. I grew up on that.I still find it hilarious that all of the "we admit that our old recipe was complete shit" commercials aired in Canada, but they didn't change the recipe up here. For Canadian franchises it was literally a commercial that said "Our pizza sucks."
I'm going to take an extra day this weekend to Andy Reid the fuck out of some BBQ. First on the list is OK Joe's on 47th Ave.I wouldn't let that deter you, just try to go there early. A buddy and I still argue about the new place on Strang Line, I don't think that it's nearly as good but he seems to think so. Haven't tried the Leawood location because...well...Leawood.
For the record, the new Leawood location of Oklahoma Joe's absolutely sucks. I should have known it was a bad sign when it was dinner time and there was no line or wait. The food was cold, tasted like it had been cooked a week before. I've never had a bad experience with the original 47th St location(other than the annoyingly long wait). So yes, fuck Leawood.I'm going to take an extra day this weekend to Andy Reid the fuck out of some BBQ. First on the list is OK Joe's on 47th Ave.
And man, we can totally be bros if you dislike Leawood like I dislike Leawood.
