Anyway looks like I'm already off the mark for my prediction about what Korra's doing. She didn't decide she didn't want to be the Avatar anymore, she's going off the fucking rails from PTSD.

I'm a little disappointed that the cage fighting was a one time thing, I liked the idea of her just forgetting her troubles with violence.

Although the spirit did see her PTSD dark avatar self... so there is obviously more going on here than run of the mill psychological trauma. Was interesting to see her frustration when Team Avatar was off fixing the world and being proactive (and even Kuvira in her own way) while the Avatar was pretty much useless and couldn't even stop some purse snatchers.

The overall theme for the series questions the role of bending and spirits in society and by direct association the role of the Avatar in the modern world.

Why is she off the rails when Bolin who had utterly no business fighting the lava guy is all, "Dude whatever." Korra needs to "harden the fuck up" as it were.

She was poisoned (almost to death), paralyzed and had her connection to Rava severed. That's pretty fucked up.

She's also a chick so yeah.

Because Bolin is the manliest of men. He's also been much more useful (both in fights and plot wise) then Mako(sp?) overall despite being the main vehicle for comedic relief. Liked the first two episodes a lot.

Hmm, I might check it out at some point. I just never imagined an anime on Nickelodeon could be edgy enough for my tastes.
Don't expect blood, cursing, or sex. It's just extremely well written with great themes (not too kiddy, especially after the first few episodes). The animation is good in TLA (you have to deal with 4:3 and a lack of HD) but incredible in Korra.

I'll put it this way for you:

I'm not an anime fan. I've seen Ninja Scroll and that's about it from Japan. I was well beyond the target age group when Avatar started so I missed it when it was new. I got into it while visiting my brother last Christmas. He had put on TLA for my nephew and I caught a couple of episodes. I thought it pretty good so I ended up watching the entire original series when I got home and then moved on to Korra. It's just a great show and I think you'd be missing out by skipping the original series and jumping straight to Korra. No one who I've gotten to watch it has regretted it at all.

Also, as great as Korra is, it doesn't even reach the quality of the original series until season 3. That's not a knock on Korra at all, either.

Bit of an redundant episode imo, most of the stuff was easily figured out from the first one, but it's nice to have it spelled out for you.

Korra going through her own Fight Club ending is a bit amusing

So you've only seen Ninja Scroll, but you say the story is way better than anime from Japan? Ok... Ninja Scroll the movie is decent, but it's 2 decades old. The series is average at best.

I'm looking for comparisons to Fullmetal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, Moribito, Twelve Kingdoms, etc. in terms of story and character development. Is there a mature underlying theme with a strong, focused story? Or is it more like episodic adventures of good trying to vanquish evil because evil is bad type deal? Generally, anime longer than a few seasons tend to follow this pattern.

I based that statement off of what Chysamere said. He's such a giant weeaboo that he moved to Japan 5 years ago and still hasn't left.

As far as the other thing you said goes:

There are definitely mature themes going on behind the story arc. They mix in episodic adventures but it's all about the journey to the ultimate final destination which the writing doesn't lose sight of. They aren't vanquishing evil because it's evil, they're vanquishing evil because evil in this case is really fucked up (for reasons that are spelled out throughout the series).

The first series is a 3 season arc while Korra is a series of season-long arcs.

TLA is 3 seasons of 20 episodes each, of one continuing, well written story with interesting and funny characters. Most anime writing is shit, so it's not hard to be better than it. Korra is set 70 years after TLA.

The animation in Korra is some of the best I've ever seen. It's hard to compare TLA to anime because anime tends to run in seasons and be self contained. They're made to be TV shows after all. Only the really popular ones have continuous runs like Naruto, One piece, etc.

If you watch anime for the story, you will not be disappointed in TLA. Korra's story is eh until season 3 though. TLA and Korra are both very Eastern influenced so if you like things like Samurai Champloo and Twelve Kingdoms, you should like the theme. Bottom line is, TLA is some of the finest animation ever produced and you'd be stupid not to watch it.

what they said. tla and korra are excellent shows. i have watched a lot of anime, personally i would rank them up with the very best animes. Not" the best" but comparable in quality, plot, etc. To be in my top ~15 series I have seen. I probably have watch well over 100 anime series.

i can see why nick is not airing korra. it"s theme is now too mature for Nick tv.
