Teaching in two different gyms, was teaching in three for a bit. Use a lot of Ecological Games, students prefer the games, more fun. More intuitive learning, but inferior knowledge transfer.

Exclusively No-Gi now, to difficult to train in multiple distinct styles at this point in my life, although I like the Gi, the IBJFF rules regarding legs make it a non-starter, given my expertise. In addition its nice not to wash and hang Gis all the time

The advent of the Instructional age, and the systemized approaches to playing, being made available by the best Coaches and best players, has completely changed the knowledge dynamic

Yeah, it's crazy. I stopped training in 2017 after my sixth knee surgery but my wife kept going. The ability to instantly access details from the highest-tech sources has completely changed the learning process over the past few years, and she got better SUPER fast. When I started in '09 we were literally watching loops of bootleg VHS tapes trying to figure out what people were doing.

When I started in 2013, a bit before starting this thread (funny seeing some of my early posts), we still only had a few instructionals. Basically I had some Ryan Hall, and Riley Bodycomb DVDs—until John finally released his first Enter the System, and soon after BJJ Fanatics went live.

I have amassed over a Terabyte of instructionals, and the ability to just rewind and watch stuff over and over for those little details, makes seminars and normal classes obsolete, at this stage of my training.

I do get a lot of enjoyment out of teaching now too, I try to keep the class interacting, and nail down details without having to make them try and interpret broken English all the time, with a bunch of disjointed techniques thrown around. We always start with Stand Up drills, trying to teach everyone competency, from the feet. Do a standing Game, go over some standing tech, do a ground game, cover some ground tech, finish with some live rounds.

Sorry to hear that you had to give it up

Has anyone taken Krav Magra here? I also mean like legit training and not a watered down self defense stuff. I'm thinking about taking classes but I'm limited to BJJ or Krav Magra here. I don't want to take like Tae Kwan Do/Shotokan type stuff. I had a year of Hapkido like 35 years ago which is the limit of my knowledge.

Never done it myself, the biggest thing I’ve heard to watch out for in Krav Maga, is inconsistencies between schools, some schools are good, some are junk.

One of my old mentors did teach Krav Maga in the IDF, but he always said he preferred BJJ

I'd pick BJJ. Krav has a very high percentage of bullshit that will never work (varies by school/teacher), and those parts that do work are better gained from any kind of practice that has a robust live sport/sparring element. Basically MMA, BJJ, Judo, Sambo, wrestling, boxing/kickboxing. Anyone selling you unarmed defense from weapons you should avoid.

It's possible the BJJ is shit too. But at least you'll be getting a good workout even with shit BJJ. I would try them both for a couple months. But if you can't tell what is trash and what is good, then stick with BJJ. Like suave said, krav maga has a real high percentage of bullshit. Odds are that place is just a tournament style school that doesn't even know what it's teaching, but picked krav maga because its a cool name.

no dingy boxing gyms around your area? thats safest on your joints and is a solid base of self-defence / cardio, very little bullshit involved. bjj has a non zero chance of blowing out something that is 6 months and a lot of money to fix unless you check the quality of your rolling mates.

This is basically why I stopped pursuing striking, I really like to Spar…Sparing never stays light. With any physical contest there is a risk of injury

Hearing a lot of back and forth about it, not that I give a shit, its a complete sideshow funded by Zuckbucks, outside of the sub 80 division since Fowler dropped out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for increased competition, and I’ll watch it, but this match does nothing for the sport/ its like what drove Catch Wrestling to become “Pro Wrestling”

Explain it to me. This is a dude about to fight a trans woman who is like 2 weight classes above him? When, where, and under who's rules?
