Hello friends, long time no guitar.
I have been stagnating for the last year or two due to work nonsense and lack of connections to this city. Black Friday is coming up and I am getting the urge... the urge to
splurge find inspiration with tremendous holiday savings.
My current collection is missing a guitar loaded with humbuckers. I have hot rails in the bridge of a Strat and a Lil JB '59 in a Tele I have set up for slide but I have been sorely missing some real humbucker action of late.
I have found that I do enjoy the shorter scale guitars like Gibson's typical 24.75". My issue is that I don't really like playing the Les Pauls I want to afford - not only are they are bricks and any one that doesn't sound awful costs an arm and a leg. I like the SG in theory, but every one I've owned has turned out to be quirky, unbalanced or... well we'll call it typical modern Gibson trash and like the LP, I really don't really want to spend what it takes to buy one old enough to be of good quality. Firebirds are even worse because they are damn near impossible to find and the modern ones all have those terrible ceramic magnet minis in them that sound like crap compared to the vintage ones. I have looked at PRS SE series but I find them to be decidedly acceptable. I neither like them nor hate them and I want to stay away from emotionless purchases.
So I believe I am going to go techie once again and get my fix on through a project guitar. My modified Am Deluxe Strat turned out wonderful so I am more confident going into the next project.
I had my eyes set on the previous (2013 maybe?) Fender release of the Mustang Pawn Shop Special with dual humbuckers. However, I could never find one that seemed to be of any decent quality (Mexis seemed to be really hit or miss that year) and I eventually just gave up on it.
Fender just came out with another candidate however, and I am thinking of going this route as a start:
Now the Mustang 90 has several advantages and disadvantages. On the pro side, the control layout is more modern without the classic Mustang 'phase switches', rosewood neck and a string through hardtail bridge. On the cons side, the plate is routed for P90s, not a full size humbucker.
With that in mind, here's the mods I'm thinking of doing:
1) mini humbuckers (easy drop in, love the tone of vintage ones - thinking SD Antiquity IIs?)
2) Graphtech saddles (I love these on my Strats)
3) Tusq nut
4) New 500K pots, 3 way switch and orange drop .022uF caps (Mexi electronics aren't fantastic)
5) Coat pool route with shielding paint (did copper on my strat and nearly lost all my fingers on that shit)
6) Standard controls? (no coil tap on the Antiquity II pups since its 1C wiring)
7) Fender locking tuners
Should make it stable as a rock and give it insane sustain considering it's string-through. Hoping to get a good blues crunch sound with the minis, something along the lines of Johnny Winter.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
