hahah, Noodle, the HM-2 has a reputation for being shit. Guess a good amp and an eq might help it.

"76 Gibson Les Paul Custom" sounds sexy, bet it's pretty heavy tho.

I've been getting involved with a jazz-funk group lately. I might be the worst player in the group which is pretty much the dream. Especially if I can get them to play shit I write.

Yeah the pedal is a giant piece of shit, we knew it was too, but we wanted to have that authentic Dismembered sound so we had to buy it. It's really tough to EQ around the pedal, it just sounds like a can of bee farts.

The guitar is the heaviest guitar I've ever played

Anybody have much experience with custom cabs and am I going to have to do any type of break-in period with it? I've only ever played combo tubes and have picked those up used from other musicians in Tucson but am switching over to an Ampeg head and an Atlas 4x12 cab.

And does anybody know of a good place for pro setups in the Phoenix/Tempe area? I've found one boutique shop that I think is legit in south Scottsdale but I've been spoiled by my Tucson place for so long that I'm not sure if I'm going into this forcing a good replacement for that and missing out on something better.

If the speakers are new you'll want to break them in. It sounds weird but you can lay the cab face down on your bed and leave the amp turned on with a guitar to produce a low amount of feedback and leave it on all day. I forget how many hours but I want to say 12 24 or 48

Had the first practice last night.

I m odded our HM-2 pedals to accept 9V Power Supplies (1983... required 12v...)

Everything was going good then my buddy's amp blew up. My tubes were old and ready to go... then they went full on microphonic. Practice over haha.

Made it through 5/9 songs though. Getting nervous.. show is on Halloween.

Yeah the problem is its death metal and a bunch of the songs have a ton of riffs and stops. If it followed traditional song structures I'd be less worried

Re-tubed the 6505+.. $160 later, yikes. 4 6L6GC's, 6x 12ax7's

Almost as bad as my triple rectifier.... 6x 6L6GC's, 6x (or 5x) 12ax7's, 3 5u4G or whatever rectifiers. Was like $250 or so.

$160 sounds like you either got a pretty decent discount for buying in bulk or you bought Chinese. Did that include biasing too or is that just the cost of the tubes?

For reference, the last couple times I put new 6L6 in my Bassman they were in the ballpark of $60 a pair.

Haven't posted in this thread in a while... I've had the JP6 for a few years now and picked up the JP7 today. Mystic dream is impossible to photograph, but you get the idea:

And now I have the pair:

Hello friends, long time no guitar.

I have been stagnating for the last year or two due to work nonsense and lack of connections to this city. Black Friday is coming up and I am getting the urge... the urge to splurge find inspiration with tremendous holiday savings.

My current collection is missing a guitar loaded with humbuckers. I have hot rails in the bridge of a Strat and a Lil JB '59 in a Tele I have set up for slide but I have been sorely missing some real humbucker action of late.

I have found that I do enjoy the shorter scale guitars like Gibson's typical 24.75". My issue is that I don't really like playing the Les Pauls I want to afford - not only are they are bricks and any one that doesn't sound awful costs an arm and a leg. I like the SG in theory, but every one I've owned has turned out to be quirky, unbalanced or... well we'll call it typical modern Gibson trash and like the LP, I really don't really want to spend what it takes to buy one old enough to be of good quality. Firebirds are even worse because they are damn near impossible to find and the modern ones all have those terrible ceramic magnet minis in them that sound like crap compared to the vintage ones. I have looked at PRS SE series but I find them to be decidedly acceptable. I neither like them nor hate them and I want to stay away from emotionless purchases.

So I believe I am going to go techie once again and get my fix on through a project guitar. My modified Am Deluxe Strat turned out wonderful so I am more confident going into the next project.

I had my eyes set on the previous (2013 maybe?) Fender release of the Mustang Pawn Shop Special with dual humbuckers. However, I could never find one that seemed to be of any decent quality (Mexis seemed to be really hit or miss that year) and I eventually just gave up on it.

Fender just came out with another candidate however, and I am thinking of going this route as a start:
fcwd-products-electric-guitars-offsets-09b-3-up-mustang90.jpg

Now the Mustang 90 has several advantages and disadvantages. On the pro side, the control layout is more modern without the classic Mustang 'phase switches', rosewood neck and a string through hardtail bridge. On the cons side, the plate is routed for P90s, not a full size humbucker.

With that in mind, here's the mods I'm thinking of doing:
1) mini humbuckers (easy drop in, love the tone of vintage ones - thinking SD Antiquity IIs?)
2) Graphtech saddles (I love these on my Strats)
3) Tusq nut
4) New 500K pots, 3 way switch and orange drop .022uF caps (Mexi electronics aren't fantastic)
5) Coat pool route with shielding paint (did copper on my strat and nearly lost all my fingers on that shit)
6) Standard controls? (no coil tap on the Antiquity II pups since its 1C wiring)
7) Fender locking tuners

Should make it stable as a rock and give it insane sustain considering it's string-through. Hoping to get a good blues crunch sound with the minis, something along the lines of Johnny Winter.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I swear, Ian Thornley is not from this planet...... The mid section of this is absolutely nuts. This album can not drop soon enough.

Palum, how do you feel about Epiphone stuff? Some of their top end guitars are actually really good quality, and especially if you're hyped up about doing some mods you can get a really nice axe for pretty cheap.

A lot of guys who have only seen the cheapo Epiphone stuff are surprised when they try out their primo guitars. Idk how picky you are, but IMO if you had your heart set on a LP or an SG it's worth stopping by a shop and trying out the high end Epi version.

-----------------------

On a side note, my girlfriend surprised me and bought me a Little Martin acoustic. Wanted one for years... And they're only $350... but have been more interested in dropping money into my electric for the most part.

Holy cow what a good sounding guitar for the price tho. I'm beyond happy with it.

Well, I don't believe Epiphone makes good LPs. They are always just a little 'wrong' in my eyes. It's on purpose, you know Gibson is doing this to get $3K out of anyone who wants a decent sounding one. The problem with the SGs is that all the issues with Gibson SGs are exacerbated with them.

TL;DR: I may one day find one (I look at Epi 335s a lot hoping to find a decent one) that is worth it but much like anything in the 'affordable' range of used Gibson, it's so hit or miss that I'm not going to waste more time on it. I saw a translucent colored Epi LP at GC a while back and I swear that the mahogany body was cracked and glued under the maple cap. Just bleh.

I know Epi can make decent guitars, their tribute Casino models and similar are actually pretty excellent but not what I'm looking for right now.
