Why not a boat
I used to build pirogues which is how I got into the stitch and glue method of construction which is what this kit uses. I have a kayak and a boat. I really have no place to use a sailboat. I used the hell out of my teardrops. I use them as a basecamp while backpacking and such. I built probably 20 pirogues thru the years and gave them as gifts.

The woodworking on this would mostly be in the finish. He supplies marine ply that is already cnc cut and ready to be stiched. The glassing would be the biggest hurdle for the average do it yourselfer. Especially in the south if you don't have use of an air conditioned shop, since the hotter it is the harder it is to work with epoxy.

Put down a deposit on this kit today. I've built 2 teardrops in the past and am looking to do another assuming I ever get my medical figured out. CLC really known for their kayaks. We'll see.

I will flat out admit that it looks pretty, but my question is... why??

Why are you severely limiting yourself in space. It is super streamlined for what? MPG? I'd rather pay a few extra bucks for losing gas mileage for a more roomy comfortable space. If you want something that compact, just bring a tent. *shrug*

I'd say he wants to build something mainly and he can tow that with his fiat.

May get one of those for my dad to build, try to have it done by June so you can give me a review, B

I'd love to build one of those. I need to get a practical car, though. I'm thinking of maybe a pickup truck as a second automobile. I want to get a new kayak, but a 370Z isn't going to work there.

I tow with either my z71 or my F250. It's not about mpg. I have a 28' trailer as well with a lot more room. I go to some really out of the way places for a week or more at a time and the only time I will be in the trailer is when I'm actually sleeping. I go out west backpacking and a lot of places I stay you can't get a fullsize trailer in there. Just need something that I can secure and doesn't get wet. My last two worked out extremely well. I wound up selling them to people who wanted them a LOT considering the time and effort I had into them.

I enjoy building and it's stitch and glue just like my pirgoues I have built. But don't attempt one if it gets hot where you live without an AC shop unless you can do it at night and such. Even with super slow harderner for epoxy it kicks off extremely fast when it's 100F out.

I used to have a slide in camper but it's too much of a pain to take on and off when you get where you are going and in a lot of places you don't have the tree clearance to drive with one well. Not to mention a new one now starts at around $20k.

I'm not concerned with what it looks like. I'll paint mine instead of leaving it natural like they did. But the kit for what it contains is really a good price considering the plywood it is made out of. I have a very hard time getting marine plywood and made my last two out of MDO which is similar to marine plywood with a resin paper normally used in making signs, durable and such. You'll spend more time building one sourcing all the shit than you will actually workin on one. This helps a lot.

Won't be done by June I know that. They don't start shipping till May and as right now I can stand for a total of 10 minutes at most at a time.

I'm in a townhouse so my capacity for "manly shit" is limited(I take manly shits, though). However, I'm looking to buy a house and likely something that needs fixing up and will benefit greatly from a truck.

Borrow a friends. Apparently that is the plan from everyone I know who doesn't own a truck, which isn't that many. They act like the reason you own a truck is to loan it to them for "whatever".

The last time I bought a vehicle, I was almost completely set on getting a pickup until I thought about the fact that I would be the *only* one of my group of friends that owned a pickup. I didn't want to be the default "hey, help me move a couch on Saturday" guy, so I passed and got an SUV instead.

I put a hitch and ball on my miata. I've hauled everything from motorcycles to pallets of laminate flooring and lumber. Owning a truck is fine if you use the thing but it's way overkill if you need it only every other month.

Bonus, it's pretty darn rare anyone ask me to haul anything for them.

The Stingray by Tentsile(tentsile.com) no affiliation other than I love new camping/backpacking gear. They did win ISPO in Munich though, and were listed in Forbes as an up and coming neat company! Also went to their new store in Ogden(near Salt Lake) to meet them and see the tents in person. The people I met there were great.

What is the purpose of the thing over te water
It is a tent, but also comes with just the "bottom" layer, so you can use the system a few different ways. In that photo I just setup the bottom part(no screen tent or rainfly) so you can basically lay in like a hammock. I chose to put it over the water just for fun and a view....water was freezing cold though, pretty sure a testicle retreated into the abdomen during setup.

It's got some cool options because of the double floor combo..

1.) You can set it up exactly with the tent part, and then put sleeping pads between the layers. It acts like a little cubby for them blocking most of the convection heat loss(yet to test in dead cold)
2.) You can set them up a few feet apart so you essentially have a multi-level tent fort in the trees, they also have a wind-block you can put between them
3.) You can use the tent/extra floor separately like I've done above

I'm sure you can get more creative than that too. Some cool pictures online of stuff people have done. Mostly I was just testing it out and trying to get more comfortable with setup and use. Officially listed to hold 880lbs, claims it can sleep 6 people and while I do trust the ability to hold the weight, 6 people might be a little cramped but I find those numbers true of all tents that show 3 people laying side by side. Sure they fit but no room for wiggle or gear. I'd say you can sleep 4 with plenty of room for whatever else you wanted in there.
