Ya, only theater I ever went to with real butter was some art house place and there was an up-charge for it. That oil stuff they drench on it at most places is disgusting.

Can make some damn good popcorn at home anyways. I have one of those whirly-pop things you put on your stovetop. Use some real olive oil to pop it with and then Kerrygold Irish Butter once it’s in the bowl (although if you use good olive oil, don’t even need the butter sometimes). Top tier popcorn.

Being required to wear a mask is just about the least offensive thing about chain theaters. Just hoping this speeds up the direct to streaming model so I can safely fuck off ever having to go to those places again.

Agree about the (hopeful) resurgence of drive ins or smaller cinemas. That stuff I'll pay for.

Lol? I buy small popcorn which is probably equivalent to a bag of microwave popcorn in volume, not the “you can wash a dog in this” tub size.

Also fuck the fake “butter” they ask if you want on it. Shit is nasty.
its just coconout oil and Flavacol.

i use both when i micro popcorn at home. i dont use a lot of coconut oil, but just enough to give a taste of movie popcorn.

Oh, I agree. It's just such a useless gesture. It's like the "rule" of no outside/food drink. How the fuck many people obey that one? I hear at least 4+ soda cans pop open per movie.

To pop it they use those, so the base popcorn has some good flavor, but the extra shit they offer to drench your popcorn in is nasty.

Oh ok. I thought that's what they used for "butter". I buy these too.

The yellow coloring in the movie popcorn is the Flavnol. Usually I’m fine with the “dry” popcorn at the movies where it is popped with that. But the pumped liquid they put on the popcorn if you want “butter” on your popcorn is usually partially hydrogenated soybean oil + other shit apparently, which makes it basically liquid trans fat and what makes popcorn super unhealthy if you opt to get that. Honestly I’m surprised they haven’t phased it out if that is still the case, since trans fat are the mostly unhealthy fat and most fast food places have gotten rid of it.

Trans fat is the most delicious tho. It's what gives pizza rolls their pop.

you guys are mental. the only real benefit to seeing a movie in a theatre vs a home theatre nowadays is the theatre has better popcorn.

At face value, yeah that's true. However, since I'm not making popcorn everyday, it sits in the garage collecting dust. If I want to make authentic movie popcorn I need to lug that thing out, clean it up, grab the right oils, realize I didn't stock back up when I used it last month, go to the store, try to find the popcorn oil, realize the store reorganized since I've been here last, run into an old friend that I haven't talked to in a while, remember exactly WHY I haven't talked to them in a while, forget that I also ran out of bullion and should grab some as long as I'm here, oh, is that Chuck on sale? I haven't made beef stew in a while, shoot I grabbed the wrong bullion, do I have enough potatoes? Probably... But what the hell, I'm here so I might as well grab some, oh right, I need some good red wine for the stew, $20??? I just need a cup of it...

Before I know it I've spent $150 at the store when all I needed was some popcorn and oil... But hey, at least I saved money by not going to the theatre, right?

lol, thats a you problem, not a they problem. i have a simple microwave popper(8 dollars) and the popcorn comes out tasting like movie theater popcorn. i have enough Flavacol(10 dollars) to last a decade. i use coconut oil (1 dollar) to coat the popcorn . put on some flavacol and stick the container in the microwave for 4 minutes. take it out and put some movie butter oil they sell at walmart for 3 dollars and i have my movie popcorn .

You can buy a whirlypop for $15-20 at Bed&Bath. You put oil in it (and flavocol if you like) and kernels, put it on stovetop at medium, turn the crank on it (rotates the kernels in the oil, preventing burning and ensuring even oil coat on the kernels). Shit pops (still crank while it pops, so the popcorn doesnt sit in one place too long), take it off stove and let it cool for a minute, then pour it into a bowl. Works pretty damn well.

I mean, you can make stove top popcorn in a pot as well, but you have to keep moving it around to prevent burns (mechanical devices remove the guesswork). They key with the pot method is you need to let the oil get hot before you add the kernels (faster pop = less time the early birds overcook in the pot)., otherwise the risk of burning your popcorn goes up.

I disagree. SOME movies are truly amazing watching at least once in the theater...!!!
personally, i'd agree 100% on that. but i also don't have any kind of amazing theatre set up at home. so i have all kinds of reasons to still go see a movie in a theatre. but i'm also a dying breed, methinks
