if they put the "excitement" in episode 4 then why did they only release episodes 1-3 to critics? i think the excitement is happening, when vince vaughn showed off his boxing moves to fight an obese mexican , that was the excitement.

I'm still thinking the fat, bearded, drunk cop (Dan for Deadwood!!!) is the True Detective. Watch scenes close with him in it. His whole drunk and incompetent schtick is all a game. He's on this case, paying attention, doing cop work, shooting pictures of gay CHiPs? Was that him? Seemed so. He only had like a total of 10 seconds screen time, but stole the show and is on to something!

I would assume the fat cop is there to get dirt on the investigators just in case shit starts coming out.

I also thought the whole fight scene with VV was awkward.

That was my take also. He's the hedge.

The person who shot Velcoro might not have wanted to kill a(nother) cop or he may not have wanted to kill Velcoro specifically. It could be someone privy to the investigation (maybe the mayor, maybe the lieutenant, maybe both), someone in that Vinci inner circle who needed Velcoro out of the way to snag the camera, but still wants him inside of the investigation to serve his purpose. He's probably expendable if they have two plants on the team but you don't burn him down yet if you don't need to.

I don't understand how ppl aren't raging at how horrible VV makes every scene, he's just terrible and you guys are content w/ him doing a Rocky impression?

The correct opinion is that VV sucks, has no screen presence and everyone around VV is doing a better job acting, even gold tooth sumo. OMG, he and gay cop are so boring the only thing they get from me is FF.

It is almost as if NP was overly sensitive to all of the discussion of off the wall fan theories that got going in S1 in response to all sorts of shit that wasn't supposed to mean anything coming off as a crutch to build interest in the show and he's overcompensating in the opposite direction this season with a criminal investigation buried in meh.
