I expect a certain amount of realism in my 'real' type stories whether it be books, TV, or movies.

Also, even in those types of shows, the good ones hold to their own internal logic and world. You can have "unrealistic" things even in fantasy and sci-fi worlds because they don't set something up intelligently within the world and rules they've created.

Except Paul wasn't in hiding because there was nothing they had on him at the time except for the photos. If Paul was actually trying to be in hiding, he wouldn't have gone to a police station. You somehow think it's more plausible that Birdman was tailing him the entire time and got into the police station just to look over his shoulder.
Though, I will admit it's a little silly that he went to a police station at all when his two partners were wanted for crimes (though I forget the timing, maybe they didn't know about Ray being framed yet). He could have easily been tailed back to their hideout.
It isn't the mystery that I am bothered by it's the various poorly designed plot elements just to advance the story.
This blackwater crew or whatever they call themselves is now running security for Calisto. They weren't at the party and they weren't brought in last minute because gay dude was running the long con on Paul. The thing is the gay dude was checking up on him way too earlier for them to have cared about him being part of any investigation.
That is just one of many convenient options they just waved a magic wand at to make it happen. I dislike it when they do that in any TV show, movie, or book and I see it a lot so this isn't a huge dig on True Detective and why I don't bring up 99% of the problems I have with this season. They can only do so much with the time they have and in order to make sure us the viewers know what's going on sometimes it needs to be ham fisted. The actions don't take place in a vacuum though and you should write your shows better if you have to wave magic wands for plots to move forward.

Non of them new they were wanted for murder, Paul was the one that saw that on the computer. Right after he read that Ani was wanted for questioning/APB it went to Ray getting setup with the Davis murder

I just don't get why our remaining true detectives aren't laser focused in on the california train land deal. Expose that to 10 newspapers and TV stations, how one corporation has bought up massive amounts of land cheaply that it dumped toxic waste on and now it stands to make a huge profit on it from federal money and has ties to the russian mob. They don't even need their "secret" documents with "signatures", it would all be in public records. Bam, that shit would get shut down faster than Welfare in Texas and all the people in the top would get sent to federal ass pounding prison.

It's not hard to follow along (especially at this point). That doesn't mean it has arrived at its destination in a well crafted manner. Please tell me you guys are all postmodernists -- at least the disregard for the creator's ability and intent would make more sense. Thats why I brought up all the flaws of the one track shot earlier, where were all these people last season. Why werent they bitching about Rust going to the ghetto when he could have just kidnapped the guy in the beginning and never had to put his life in danger?
