Yes. It has higher viewers than the last season. At WORST people will tune in to next season to see if it's "better" than this season.

Ratings: Hits Season Low | Variety
HBO's "True Detective" (2.18 million viewers) continued its gradual decline heading into its finale this Sunday, down from the previous week's 2.34 million. In its first season, the penultimate episode of "Detective" averaged 2.33 million viewers and then spiked to 3.52 million for its finale. Lead-out "Ballers" also hit a low (1.56 million), but "The Brink" (999,000) was up week to week.

Will this get picked up for a third season?
Don't see why it wouldn't. It's still getting decent ratings (despite trending downward). It's still enjoyed and arguably enjoyable. It still gets a ton of media attention and pub. Is probably seen as an positive asset financially still and the rumors of HBO's death are greatly exaggerated.

I think the biggest reason it'll get picked up, though, is Season 3 has a genuine chance at being great. Sophomore slumps, which is what I think this season is suffering from most, often translate into having learned some lessons, realizing you can't go it alone and that success and acclaim can be fleeting. I wouldn't be surprised to see Nic bringing in some help writing, going back to having a director that is a little more hands on and engaged in the vision, etc, and season 3 being great (again?). That's my hope, at least.

Maybe Nic just listens to the people proclaiming season 2 better than the first and ignores all critique and suggestion and just lone-wolfs it again, which imo still merits having a third season.

Viewership is still strong. Sophomore effort wont live up to season 1 I think we all knew that.

This season is not a disappointment imo. It could of been better, but Velcoro was legendary and I would obviously watch a 3rd season and so would most people.

What I said stands.

This season is currently averaging 2.64 million viewers per episode.

Last season averaged 2.3 million viewers per episode and MUCH of that was the 3.5 million for the finale episode. The 2nd highest episode was 2.64 million viewers for Season 1.

Edit: Had time to do maths.
Who cares what the average viewership is? This season has been shit. Would you say that Jurassic World is better than The Godfather because it made more money?

Who cares what the average viewership is? The people who get to decide if there will be a third season or not, that's who. Them and those who wonder if there will be a third season or not.

Yeah, because that's how HBO works. They're going to ask every retard on the internet "Hey, I know you guys are watching our show in larger numbers, but is the story not good enough? We should cancel, right? Yeah, I thought so. Let's turn down more guaranteed money and instead try to work on something else that, most likely, won't be nearly as successful."

Something tells me you weren't a business major.

It may have been said already, however this season had way to many characters and to many episodes (out of the 8 total) wasted on character explanation and development. I must admit the last episode and the 15 mins of the episode from 2 weeks ago has grabbed my attention again. Its to bad they did not start the climax sooner in the series....
I agree. I only watched the first episode and got stuck trying to get through the second until this week. I churned through it though, reading this thread after each episode. Inevitably with all the theories, someone would throw out the name Burress, Holloway, Pitlor, Blake, or whoever the fuck that mexican ganglord was (I had to google the last three, and even with that couldn't figure out the mexican's name), and I'd be sitting there wondering who the fuck they were talking about. This is with me watching them back to back. And even with googling the person, I'd forget who they were because there were just too damn many characters to keep track of.

This is coming from someone who did a decent job keeping track of Song of Ice and Fire characters as I was reading.

Also, popsicle is the worst fucking thing to happen to a TV thread. Congratulations, you're worse than Astro.

And for all the shit you take, I hate having to admit that you've probably been the most reasonable and objective on this season of TD. It's really bizarre. Can't wait for TWD to return to balance things out again.
i like you too, Pops, although i think you go too far sometimes. this show isnt high art, at least not this season. this is an inflated 3 part mystery on any regular crime procedural show. is not worth getting so worked up over
