Venturebeat: Blizzard delays unannounced MMO until 2016, resets whole project

I think the idea there might be that PlanetSide 2 isn't necessarily something to fear (especially years after launch), and I say this as someone who actually enjoys it. PS2 doesn't have the intimidation factor of, say, Call of Duty where competitors actively avoid launching in its path.

Maybe Titan is a shit product, but I doubt very seriously PlanetSide 2 was the cause of any of this.

Maybe they have Spies at SOE and EQN is so badass it scared Blizz..=P
As stupid as I know it sounds, the same thought had occurred to me. What if Blizzard really was just making an updated, reskinned WoW (StarCraft IP or any other) while EQN really is (for better or worse) really breaking the mold and trying something new, and Blizzard was like, fuck, we need to up our game?

Possible, yes. Likely, not really. But ya never know /shrug

Or maybe it was the dozen other WoW like games that came out in the past 5-6 yrs and all failed by using the same tired questgrind/raidgrind meta game?

If that were the case, they would of canceled it long before they ramped up to 100 devs. If I had to guess, I would imagine that the game was not a DIKU-hotbar-tab target game at all. It was probably a shitty game because they tried to tie in the RMAH of D3 and all the battle.net ID/social shit that they've been testing in WOW and made a really bland game around it.

I was also told that it was a theme park.. UT could be dead on and someone was just blowing smoke.. They did stop short of anything else due to NDA. Basically just said theme park FPS and were concerned it didn't really bring much to the table.. That's not a hard guess to make but I was told this months ago and now the delay so who knows.

I remember a few years back at some Blizzcon or some shit one of the leads was boasting that they had the tech in place to make a new mmo in 2 yrs or some shit. Someone can dig this little snippet up.

Still digging, but I didfind this quotefrom Blizzard COO Paul Sams in 2011 which is sort of funny considering this news:

"We're very confident in that product. It's an awesome one," Sams added. "We're playing it already. It is a total ball to play. We think that the reach of that product is greater than anything that we've done before. We're very excited about that. I believe that it's the type of game that will have a very long life, much like World of Warcraft has."
I guess not everyone shared his joy. Obviously the game has been in a playable state for at least a couple of years now so development must have gone awry fast.

They're probably smart enough to see that the mainstream appeal for MMO's is dead, at least in their current form.

Yeah, I'm thinking ultracasual collection of minigames in a very loose world with alotof social gaming hooks and RMAH stuff. Something like Free Realms.

I remember this but don't have a source. I think it was someone from EA. It was basically something like 2 Years + $50 million = World of Warcraft grade MMO.

The 2 xpacs a year I believe was around the first or second Blizzcon, when they talked about TBC and their xpac plans going foward.

Sounds like a company that's looking for ways to make money instead of ways to make a good video game.

In other words, sounds like current-day Blizzard?

That aside, the writing is on the wall for WoW clones, and I'm betting this was a WoW+ with some fps and a whole lot of microtransaction bullshit. Test cases for their features are things like the RMAH in D3, how far they can push "micro"transactions ($25 for a unicorn in WoW or something) and probably other parts of WoW/D3/SC you dont even recognize as such.

During the time they laid the groundwork for Titan WoW was in full swing and not had grown the market 10 times, anyone would make a new MMO then. Matter of fact everyone did and failed. Just the same reason SOE went and threw away years of work on EQN a year or two ago and started over. Blizzard realized that too. Probably at least a year ago actually and it took a few meetings of folding money hats to grasp that Titan as planned would not deliver new money hats. I wouldnt be surprised if the core team remaining isnt even about how to salvage Titan but just starting something new.

I think the main problem at Blizzard is the market is moving too fast or they are no longer quick enough to recognize where it is heading. That paired with the glacial pace that seemed to get much worse after WoW means they're late to the party in many cases now. Titan in 2009 would have probably worked out well enough. They also failed to recognize or capitalize on DotA in time and are now developing one that'll probably end up a footnote between LoL and DotA 2.

"Soon"tm just means "too little too late" these days.

Wasn't that timeline confirmed fake? Some dude just did research and guessed right?
Err, the ancient timeline isn't true.

I'm not talking about that. Semi-recently (last couple years) Blizz said that they were aiming for 100 as the end point; Blizz has all but announced Burning Legion is 6.0 (the 5.3 legendary quest line flat out says "You're fighting the Burning Legion next!"). I can't imagine what else is left for 100.

Why would you want Blizzard Minecraft when it would probably be a joke like Blizzard Dota? You still have 46 hours to backTUG!
its not about what we want. its just what blizzard does. take popular games, put a new coat of paint on them, polish, polish, polish, and release.

Pretty much! Think hanging out in Goldshire while doing all the Darkmoon Faire shit ramped up to 1000, tied into facebook, and built around a real money auction house interspersed with lots of instanced third person shooter matches in between.

Whatever happened to our old friend FreeRealms? For as horribly kid-dorky as it was I was pretty impressed with the overall technology of it, especially the streaming client.

Give me a camp spot and mob grind ANY fucking day of the week. That sounds so fucking awful.

Devs - STOP WITH THE MINIGAME SHIT.
