The simple fact we would say this today after Biden's statements yesterday or Tuesday.

Which goods are these? China + Russia control 95% of Rare Earth metals. We're not even allowed to make lightbubls in this country (only LED bulbs allowed and those are so mercury contaminated we have China make them so they can kill their own people instead of ours). Etc.
I have it on good authority that there are trillions of tons of every metal you could want here on Earth. The Astronomy Thread told me so.

Yeah being maintenance in an F-15E deployable unit... can we stay the fuck out? Please? I don't want to deal with planes being shot down like with what happened in 1991 and 2003.

He's an idiot. It's been pointed out to him repeatedly in the past that China controls 95% of theproductionof rare earths, not the actual amounts of them. Because they're horrifically polluting to produce. The US, Canada, and Europe could produce rare earths, but aren't competitive because of pesky environmental regulations about not you know, dumping horrific chemicals in to freshwater lakes and such. I think the mine in California that closed a decade or two ago is being started back up again, but I could be wrong on that. Regardless, it's not nearly as big of an issue as is often played up to be.

UK government loses vote on provisional authorisation for military intervention in Syria. Cameron will be furious.

*edit*
Quick update from the Telegraph commentary:

"It makes any British action on Syria highly unlikely. Ed Miliband asks will he confirm he will not use the Royal Prerogative to take action.

The PM responds: I can give that assurance. He says the House has not voted for either motion. "I believe in respecting the Will of this House of Commons." He says it is clear Parliament does not want military action in Syria. "I get that and I will act accordingly."

It's a huge rebellion. It will lead to calls, at least, for an early general election or for Cameron to resign"

Well, it certainly is possible to produce rare earths (which aren't rare) or whatever else you want in an environmentally respectful manner. It is a question of price and yes, environmental and safety regulations are a big part of those costs so we allow them to be produced where those regulations are slack. We could be even more restrictive in terms of regulations here too but the goal is to strike a balance I suppose.

Not sure if you mean me here anyhow but I'll stand by my statement that I am unaware of any true scarcity of any industrial metals, elements, energy sources/fuels or frankly anything other than land. There is scarcity at a given price of course but that's what capitalism does well, allocate resources based on scarcity.

As to Syria, the UK just voted a big "nuh uh" on Cameron's preliminary bill on Syrian intervention. No big shock here though given how little they liked the whole Iraq business.

Yeah, Cameron just got bitch slapped by MPs voting against the motion for military intervention. It was defeated 285 to 272, a majority of 13 votes so it was a slender loss but still a hugely embarrassing defeat for Prime Minister.

Assad is probably pissing his pants laughing at this.

At least someone has learned from Iraq.

Obama has his head so far up his ass that he can lick his tonsils.
