As I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere in Sweden I do all my hobby purchases on the web.

A year ago a small local Warhammer shop started up here and today I finally got time to visit as I needed some new paints.

The energy of these Warhammer and Magic nerds are crazy and they are so happy new people come in and ask stuff. The owner was super nice and explained a shitload of stuff and went into nerd fueled lore explanations. I could not take all of that in but he did invite me to come and try and play with them if I wanted to.

I only have a like 5 painted models (3 Blade Guard Veterans and 2 Adeptas Sororitas).

He mention trying Skirmish and Kill Team with him if I wanted later on as you only needed one box of Units. Any good guides on how all of that work?

As a total newbie in this it's all quite overwhelming, I just like to paint the guys really so have no clue how all this work.

Wahapedia is usually my go-to place for rules. I don't know kill team, but they have a section for it.

Official website has a page for the different boxes. Download the Kill Team app and faction rules today - Warhammer Community
For kill team, there are probably some youtube videos that can quickly go through the play and what is worth buying or not.
I think tomorrow has a kill team starter box coming out for preorder. SM vs DG. That might be worth grabbing?

Learning the full 40k ruleset via youtube seems like it would just be too much trouble, and you'd be better served having someone at the store walk you through a game.

If they do games with it, buy a combat patrol and play that first.

OK so this guy finds an alien structure underground in paleolithic turkey and it grants him immense psychic powers and immortality.

30k years later humanity has colonised the galaxy, but at the height of technology AI tries to take over and throws humanity into a war for survival against it's own machines.

Then those aliens invent so many disgusting immortality fuelled sexual deviances that they almost all spontaneously die to birth a Chaos God of sex, addiction and rock music. This causes enough space weather to block interplanetary travel.

The immortal guy steps out of the shadows, He is the Emperor of Mankind, and starting with a now barbarian ravaged Earth he starts his crusade across the galaxy to reconqueor and reunite humanity.

He cannot do it alone. He creates 20 genetically engineered sons to be his generals, half of them betray him in a 64 book long novel series and in death he is put on that alien structure he found called The Golden Throne and turned into a psychic lighthouse eternally screaming into the void, powered by the souls of 10,000 psychics per day.

10k years later and humanity is controlled by a fascist theocracy who will destroy entire planets for comitting heresy. These are the good guys.

What happens next is that someone will point out the inaccuracies in my post and we argue about which contradictory sources are correct.

I see your inaccuracies. But now that Im reading it in such a summarized, hastily thought out form... I see how fucking funny it is. ... And for whatever reason, I kept think of Immortan Joe when you was talking about the Emperor. Which in all honesty, sounds fucking bad ass.

Oh yeah, millions of years ago the galaxy is ruled by the mayan frog people from Warhammer Fantasy.

Some inexplicably ancient egyptian looking aliens live on a planet where the star gives them turbo cancer, they ask the frog people to cure them and they are giant assholes and say no.

Once the aliens get space tech, instead of moving to a non cancerous planet, they declare war on the frog people and are losing, but they find giant space vampires feeding off stars and put them into badass robot bodies.

The space vampires convince the aliens to also go into robot bodies, but it's a trick to eat the entire species. The now robot aliens get pissed and enslave the space vampires, but most of the robot aliens are now mindless automaton.

The alien robots start to win the war, so the frog people make elves and orcs from Warhammer Fantasy but with spaceships.

Everyone loses the war. The robot aliens go into ancient egyptian tombs to sleep for millions of years until the elves go away. Orcs are everywhere. Frog people are almost all dead.

Millions of years later the bugs from starship troopers have crossed galaxies to eat all life in this galaxy, the robot aliens wake up to stop them as they need living beings to exist so they can transfer back to organic bodies before they get too much robot dementia.

I've been playing Kill Team for the last 2+ years and its a fantastic, and relativity low entry point into tabletop gaming with GW models. Once you get into the flow of things, games shouldnt take more than 1.5 to 2 hours.

The game itself just entered its 3rd edition so its a great time to get in while everyone is learning the new/refined rules and teams.

What you are going to need is to choose a kill team & get the models (rules for all kill teams are free with the official KT App from GW & you can print them out. The app is a pdf downloader or you can get it directly from GW), measuring tape (while the game last edition used symbols for movement, the distance was still in inches), approved ops cards, equipment pack , and I would recommend the core rules book as it will have an accompanying markers sheet that is needed for the game.

I have attached an easy cheat sheet. It covers all of the keywords, but you will need visuals from the core rule book to get examples of the full game mechanics work.

Here is also a link of a How to Game for probably one of the better bat rep youtubers for Kill Team. They are by no means the best players in the world in terms of being competitive, but they are entertaining and get a lot of things right for rules interpretations, and admit when they make mistakes during their videos.

I am a locally competitive player for kill team and will gladly answer any questions you have.

How does the modelling work?

I have 5 Incursors and 5 Infiltrators, so I can make a Phobos Strike Team? But do all the weapon and gear options need to be represented properly? Because I made them for regular 40k and didn't have the Strike Team upgrade spruce.

If you are in a tournament and the TO has stated out that WSIYG is in effect, then you have to play the models with the loadouts they have been built with.

Casual games, as long as the model is within the realm of belief that they are built out with X and you are consistently using the same profile in the game that you are using it for, then it isnt a problem.

Like right now I do not have a Melta Gunner for my Nemesis Claw team. However, the Gunner role right now is being filled by a Plasma Gunner. I can run him as my Melta Gunner as long as I state that this Gunner is a Melta Gunner to start the game, and consistently use him as a Melta Gunner for that game.

Go to the GW Kill Team Team Downloads portion and get the Phobos Kill Team PDF downloaded. Take a look at their datacards and their will be an example of a model with that datacard, and also all the profiles an operative can be ran as.

Yes there is a Co-Op mode now for Kill Team. That is all in the Core Rule Book.

Cool!

Any particular starting box you would recommend?

I can always buy something now and take time painting then go from there.
With this new edition, there is a new starter box that comes with the Angels of Death (Loyal Astartes) & Death Guard Marines. All models in that box are push fit and of course unpainted, MDF terrain (this box is a testing ground for GW to go to MDF in the future), the needed markers for the game. Overall it is a great value.

Please note, that this starter box game is a very distilled & simplified version of Kill Team. It will get you started in learning about rolling (shooting, defense & melee combat) and keywords. All of these models tho will carry over to the actual game of Kill Team once you are ready for it.

I usually recommend "rule of cool" for teams/armies for newcomers.

Specifically for Kill Team, there is the Hivestorm box which is a lot of plastic including 2 teams and a dense board worth of terrain. Also coming soon is a much more affordable Starter Set with 2 teams including Space Marines and pre-painted MDF terrain that would also provide a complete experience.

Edit: beaten to the punch
