Balls of fucking steel indeed. Considering how rare violent tornadoes are, they were incredibly lucky to be close enough to this one to get into the path.Wind speeds were 150 to 175 EF3 to EF4 before the tornado ripped the instruments off the top of the TIV.
This is the one I saw. Nothing like getting smacked in the grill by bails of hay. You can see combines up in the distance being tossed around like rag dolls... It was unreal, and then to see the car get hit by what looks like a car, breaking the windshield. Crazy stuff.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veNJB...ature=youtu.be
Some footage of the Tornado today in OKC. (The one that flipped that Weather Channel car 200 yards.)
Heck in my area they throw around "warnings" just as freely. A storm gets a tornado warning if the radar signature meets certain criteria. And while yes the storm is still pretty dangerous, most of the time it's just a really severe thunderstorm and no true touched down funnel cloud. My fear is people will start shrugging them off. Of course we are very fortunate and have a basement that is heavily sealed in so we just err on the side of caution and head down there when there is calls for severe weather.the mayor of Moore has asked for an ordinance that all new homes built in the city have a storm shelter or safe room.
re: tornado watch - their could be a storm in Missouri headed towards Chicago and we'd be under a tornado watch. They don't mean anything. Gavinrad nailed it.
