And in other news:Well,fuck.

The collapse of large parts of the ice sheet in West Antarctica appears to have begun and is almost certainly unstoppable, with global warming accelerating the pace of the disintegration, two groups of scientists reported Monday.

The finding, which had been feared by some scientists for decades, means that a rise in global sea level of at least 10 feet may now be inevitable. The rise may continue to be relatively slow for at least the next century or so, the scientists said, but sometime after that it will probably speed up so sharply as to become a crisis.

"This is really happening," said Thomas P. Wagner, who runs NASA's programs on polar ice and helped oversee some of the research. "There's nothing to stop it now. But you are still limited by the physics of how fast the ice can flow."

This is one of the ways mother nature is trying to eradicate humans. This stuff is happening so slowly that humans won't do anything about it. By the time they do something it'll be way too late and it apparently is now. I just hope I'm already dead by the time when the real shit goes down because it won't be pretty.

Don't worry, you should still live long enough to see some pretty crazy fighting over fresh water even if you'll miss out on an extra ten feet of sea level.

The point you don't seem to be getting is that even if the accidents are exceedingly rare, the consequences are incredibly severe. It only takes one really bad one to really, really fuck up a large land area and/or population. Which is why caution needs to be taken. Again, I'm not arguing that we should't use ANY nuclear power. I'm arguing that it isn't the magic cure to fossil fuel consumption that some like to believe it is, for it's own set of reasons.
Propaganda;

What has been the financial/environmental fallout from 9/11? Or the financial/environmental fallout from exxon-valdez or the bp spill? Should we no longer drill for oil or build tall buildings because bad things happen and they have consequences? Yeah you do everything to mitigate accidents and avoid them but eventually something happens and you just have to accept that.
Nuclear power may have the fewest fatalities, but what of the byproduct that comes of it? We have to store it safely for about 10,000 years, yes? That's pretty bloody costly energy.
Not really. We had a place fucking built but the messiah closed it down. And as Strifen said nuke plants dont really produce large amounts of waste. Yucca mountain would of been a repository for all current waste(not just plant waste either) thats been produced so far and all that would be produced in the future.

All of these events are an order of magnitude less than Fukushima, in terms of costs. Thanks for reinforcing the point.

This is the most clearheaded discussion of nuclear power I have come across. It was written pre-fukushima so it doesn't address that directly, but it's a nice simple explanation of a lot of the fears about nuclear power.

Rethinking Nuclear Power

People refusing to allow new nuclear plants to be built are actually increasing the chances of an accident by freezing the country in 1970s technology.

Maybe he could give some tips on my slice. As far as his opinions on climate change go? I couldn't care one bit less. Every indication is that this guy is a complete fucking crackpot.

If we can't trust a lawyer with political connections when it comes to climate change, then who can we trust?!?!?!

DC area and there's a slim chance we may see a high in the 70s sometime this week. Mid 90s today and tomorrow, then severe thunderstorms, followed by a 10+ degree drop.

But then there was the first hurricane of a mild season deciding to try and hit us so mother nature is just trying to camouflage the big punches.
