You forget the marginal carbs from the nuts lol. Want me to post the screenshot of myfitnesspal saying that food comes in at 67% 31%? The nutrient amounts I posted are all from myfitnesspal as well (and scanned directly from the barcodes of my packaging).

I love this, someone makes a mistake then accuses me of "skewing the numbers", I get defensive and I'm the one fagging up the thread? lolz

I did a quick search for pictures of Sean Bean exercising, as I thought that would be a more appropriate picture of the weight loss thread. Unfortunately it looks like all he does is point guns, chop off heads, and drink beer.

anyone else read/try the Eat to Live plan?

It essentially recommends a vegan diet without processed foods and limited grains, where the goal of the diet is to maximize the nutrient to calorie ratio of foods (obviously veggies, especially greens are the most nutrient dense and meats/cheeses have virtually none).

General guidelines are to make it a goal to:
eat one pound of raw veggies per day (mostly leafy greens),
one pound of cooked veggies per day,
at least four fruits per day,
at least one cup of legumes (beans/pulses) per day,
up to one cup of soy milk/almond milk
portion of whole grains (oatmeal, wheat pita)
fats from things like nuts

Pretty interesting stuff. Been following it for a few days now and I'm not minding it. I haven't finished the entire book yet but I know there is some room for deviation. 10% rule.. as long as you follow the plan 90%. It really does make a lot of sense to load up on veggies and fruits.

Right now, I'm really just relying on his studies/references(which are a lot) when I'm done the book I'm going to check into it more. He pretty much demonizes meat heh

So what's the basis for saying meat is nutrient deprived? Because it's all protein and fat? Or because of the way most meat is processed/killed/fed/injected?

I can't imagine living life without meats and cheeses (all dairy, really). Those are two of the most delicious and filling parts of my diet.

You won't get any responses here when talking about vegan/veg diets, it's all about meat here. I know a couple vegans who work out and have 5% body fat. Being vegan also helps due to lack of being able to cheat since there are hardly many candies/junk food that aren't vegan.

Also depends on if you are trying to slim down or bulk up, slimming down as a vegan is cake but trying to bulk up can take some work and supplements.

Eat one pound of raw veggies because...? Eat one pound of cooked veggies because...? It's not enough to say they are nutrient dense. That's just a feel good for the reader. There are dozens of nutrients humans need, and to say something is nutrient dense, thus you should eat a lot of it, is specious reasoning. You might end(and probably do) up getting most of the nutrients you need just through mass consumption, but you're no better off than the people that don't follow this diet because you don't know specifically why you're eating the foods you're eating.

If you want nutrients, plan your foods out so you hit 100% of the most important nutrients. I think, besides the obvious macros, is usually iron, calcium, vitamin A & C. And I don't think you need to abscond from meats and cheeses to easily hit those.

Or buy some multivitamin. Yeah yeah yeah, absorption is affected by what food the nutrient is attached to. I'd rather be minorly deficient in some nutrients than make eating no fun at all.

Meat has a plentiful supply of one of the most difficult nutrients to consume on a vegan diet: protein.

It's... complicated, as usual.

Near as I can tell, because of scant evidence, there is nothing better or worse health-wise between a good Vegan diet and a good non-vegan diet except maybe it might be a little more difficult to hit good while being vegan. But that is relatively minor.

My main objections with veganism (besides rhetoric) are ecological in nature.

to use an analogy from the book..Which has more protein oatmeal, ham or a tomato? The answer is they all have about the same. The difference is the tomato and oatmeal are packed with fiber and other disease fighting nutrients and the ham is packed with cholesterol and saturated fat. The writer Dr.Joel Fuhrman, believes (and uses tons of studies to make his case) that Animal products meats, cheeses , and processed food are the reason for our ailing health problems and high cancer rates. Food like meats and cheeses have very little in form of good nutrients. As opposed to veggies which have a high nutrient density.. for instance steak has 6.4 grams of protein per 100 calories and broccoli has 11.1 plus fiber and other disease fighting nutrients. He references a lot of studies, China project, medical journal, etc.. It's an interesting read for anyone looking to pick up a new book on nutrition.

Vegan is for pussies!

I tried it once. I ate a steak 4 hours later. Never looked back.

Protein is much less an issue in a vegan diet thanEPAandDHAare. Again, there are vegan sources (algae) but they are generally expensive and difficult to get a hold of.

100 calories of raw broccoli does not have 11g of protein. Have fun eating 3.3 cups of broccoli.

Also, that must be a really fatty piece of steak. I just looked up the 2 pieces of pork sausage I had last night. 236 calories for 4.25 ounces, 28g of protein.

If I am going to be honest, and I admit I haven't read this book, it sounds like much of the same stuff we've heard for the past 30 years that is shown more and more every day to not be true.
