I think it's safe to assume he meant sugared soda. But you knew that, you just like pointing stupid shit out. And that's coming from me.

Try as I might, I can't give up some sort of snacking at work and until recently I was buying those big containers of raw almonds from Target. On my last trip I found other mixes that are fewer in calories like the Zen Party and Tex Mex ones. Are they "better for me" for lack of a better term then the almonds or even though they are less calories are they just empty carbs?

Raw Almonds

Zen Party Mix

Tex Mex Mix
Looks like the main difference is that the two mixes have empty carbs as filler. For example, the Zen Party Trail Mix looks like it has rice crackers in it, going by a quick Google image search. If I had to say whether one is "healthier" (a loaded word with too many meanings), I'd say the plain almonds are. They might have more calories, but they're all natural and you're not getting processed bits mixed in with them like you are with the other two.

That said, if your goal is just to lose some weight, I'd go with whichever one keeps you satiated while meeting your caloric requirements. All of them are better choices than typical snack foods like cookies and chips.

I'm addicted to Coke Zero. More for the caffeine than anything else. But it also doesn't taste like complete ass like Diet Coke.

Diet soda tastes shitty if you're used to regular. If you stop drinking regular then you actually start to enjoy diet.

I tried that. It ended with me weighing 400+ lbs and drinking tubs of garlic butter.

This is what thin people just don't understand.
