I don't disagree with you entirely. Carb cycling may be optimal for muscle gain, but that's not my primary goal with lifting right now.
So what is your primary goal, and how much do you weigh at the moment?

When I signed up with my pt last year, I told him I didn't want to get massive, just lean/ripped. The more I got into lifting, then the less it became about pure fat loss and more adding muscle.

I'm still not aiming to get huge, I think 80kg at 10% and 5,11 should suffice.

Plus there is the health benefits from adding more muscle.

My point is, I wish my training and diet had been geared towards adding muscle from the start

I don't really know why people would say a low fat % is natural or unnatural, I'm not sure what people think those at 3% do that's unnatural but here's a handy guide:
Men-Body-Fat.jpg

Obviously sub10% isn't some freakish amount, but getting sub 5% isn't fun or healthy.
Lots and lots of steroids and/or HGH for anyone below 5% for sure, and usually under 7% but not always.

I'm also skeptical about that chart. The 6-7% looks more like 8% and the 3-4% looks like 5-6% and some diuretics.

Nobody is a legit 3% bodyfat

There are quite a few people like that. Step into a gym and you'll see plenty of unassuming looking people putting up serious weight. Strength and size don't always correlate.
Are you kidding me? Yes, everyone at the gym is constantly getting stronger without building muscle.

There's an element of strength linked to improving the neural signals so there's better/stronger impulses to your muscles. Someone with the same muscle size can be stronger than another guy, but yeah, that's not all that much.

With that said, I think I see where matsb84's idea of small dudes being stronger than bigger dudes comes from. There's a lot of big (read fat) guys out there who never lift and are weak for their size. Go to a gym and you will see relatively small guys being ridiculously strong when compared with the previously mentioned big guys. The gym bros have more muscle mass, but they can be physically small relatively speaking.

You know who obsesses over bodyfat? Young Teenage ballerinas. I am not being snide.

Focus on health, not bodyfat. Unless someone is actually paying you cash monies to retain a certain %age.

Ah I didn't know HGH and steroids were the driving components to getting sub 5% bf.

Second stupidest comment in the history of this thread.

It's a weight loss thread, not a general health thread, cretin

Oh, in that case just eat a tapeworm.

What the fuck are you even going on about all this other bullshit for?

I think the thread has a good balance of people that want to lose weight (see the scale go down), and people that want to lose body fat/gain muscle (get ripped)

Regardless, the benefit of each goal is better health

Anyone at 7-10%bf who isn't a genetic freak will be at the very peak of health, starving refugees not included. Figuring all this shit out is also fun for a lot of people. It's a huge challenge that pays off, and who doesn't want deep down inside to be shredded. If there were a pill for it we'd all take it.

For reals, was gonna say something similar - getting to 10% body fat is impossible without a detailed understanding of your body and its metabolism

See, obviously it's about more than just losing weight. And yeah, you're gonna be fucking ripped at 10%. No lie!

But don't obsess over it. That's how eating disorders start.

It seems like a boring life living below 10% or even 15% BF. I also ate pizza, cookies and a slurpee today along with beers so I've got my priorities twisted.

Forgot who asked earlier, but I am doing the ketosis thing to shed fat.

2 weeks ago when I started I was about 305, down to 286 as of today. At about 220 I should have definition starting to show in my abs, end goal is 205.

Going to get to 250 asap, then hold that for 1-3 months while I start to really push weights and cardio, then going to drop down to 225, then 215, then 205.

I was thinking about doing weekly/monthly pictures of myself as motivation and posting them, but I'm looking rather disgusting and think it is in bad taste.

The weekly picture thing can be bad because you'll capture visual proof that you're in a slump. Nothing more unmotivating than looking better in week 6 than in week 7 and 8.

How tall are you? Having visible abs at 220 would make you pretty damn swole right now unless you're around 6'8

Uh, yeah. You might want to rethink that. For men, the general rule is you'll start to see abs at around 12-13%, and they'll be pretty cut by around 10%.

If you could see your abs at 220, you're an absolutely massive beast. That's like IFBB level muscle mass there.
