Layoff letters going out today and tomorrow at work. It's been suggested to me that our team would likely be spared, but it still has me nervous since I'm the newest hire in the research group. Apparently at least some people from within my division will be cut, which is a bit surprising since we're at the core of business that the company is reorganizing around. I really like this gig, and it would suck to have it end after only 4 months.

I do have to admit, we've got enough fat to trim. A single product evaluation took me through screens owned by five separate teams. That's excessive, and it has made understanding the internal organization of the division fairly difficult.

I still get calls and emails from headhunters trying to match me to extremely generic contract software dev positions and I haven't worked in software in 10 years now. There are no indian lawyers so as soon as I hear an indian accent I hang the fuck up. Fuck you, Sanjay.

GL Heylel. Did you just take that job less than 6 months ago?
I was hired on in October, yeah. We're a small team and I'm the only member on it with knowledge in my specific area of expertise, which is crucial to our primary market growth. My director and the VP above her both felt that we ought to be alright since we already have more work than we can reasonably accomplish with our current head count. We're supporting 40+ designers across several teams in two cities with just 5 researchers.

I wasn't really worried until just today, but I'm getting a little jittery now. Being a remote employee isn't making it any better.

Well at least you didn't uproot your life to work there. But it sounds like you should be pretty good.

Nope, didn't have to relocate. Honestly, if there's at least a modicum of understanding of what is required in this line of business over the next year, I'll be fine. I have a few side gigs that can serve as potential back up plans for now if the worst happens, and I've paid off a mountain of debt since changing jobs last fall so that'll definitely help. I really don't want to switch again though. Not until I've had time to make a stronger impact here and get a strong resume item.

First major casualty among people I know hit about an hour ago. My supervisor two rungs up (boss's boss) was let go to the surprise of all of us. Haven't really heard any concrete fallout beyond that.

edit: Haven't gotten the official all-clear, but it looks like I'm going to make it. Director can't tell us officially until all notices have gone out, but we were told we could breathe easy.

Had my first day of work yesterday. Gotta say, it was the best first day of work that I've ever had. Granted, I've only worked a couple places, but it was pretty amazing to see the factory where 737s are made. I'm sure soon I'll see the wide body plant where 747s and up are made and be just as amazed! Was pretty cool in a nerdy kind of way!

And freedom? omg... My last job was a call center job, and I had it for 8 years. Golden benefits and pay, so I stuck around. But it was big brother to the max, especially after 2009. This job? Was there an hour, working on initial training and logins, and then the other Net Tech there was like alright, lets roll! and we went out to different Boeing sites to fix issues. No one ever called to find out where he was, no one called to tell him when to take a lunch. I was shocked. Definitely not what I'm used too.

About to head out for 2nd day, but so far so good, pretty amazing stuff.

Good to hear man.

When I got freedom at my first job out of school it was a bit of a culture shock too.

I would ask my boss for stuff like 1 hour time off to go run an errand and he'd be like "uhhh, I don't care unless it's a full day"

here with the unlimited time off it's even weirder. People are out all the time now.

Recruiter called today and asked if I was interested in a job located in Oceanside, CA. They get off the phone in a hurry when you tell them you couldn't keep your NFA toys there so you really aren't interested.

Probably have a knock on the door from the ATF now lol.

My friend went from being an engineer at Honda to being an engineer at Boeing. He far, far prefers the Boeing culture. Honda culture fucking sucks. He's a fucking engineer and he still had to wear the retarded onesie, had to clock in&out and until the last year he worked there he wasn't allowed to have water at his desk. There was a "Morale Initiative" where they were granted the luxury of having a water bottle lol.

I guess onesie isn't the correct term. Its more a jumpsuit. Like you'd expect a mechanic to wear. Except every person in Honda is forced to wear them regardless of job or title.

Was told I'll be losing my job at the end of the school year. Budget cuts (due to lack of taxes from the coal companies) forced teacher lay offs. I'm the FNG in the county so I was cut (as well as 60 other people.) Awesome. Oh well, gives me 4 months to find something
