When people make retarded posts with uninformed bullshit statistical analysis like this:

SCHUMER, CORNYN: PREPAID CELL PHONES HELP TERRORISTS LIKE TIMES SQUARE BOMBER EVADE DETECTION
I'm not saying it's not true it is true but the assumption is always restrict freedom to fix the problem.

Terrorism is the #1 threat to humanity and civilization, a near infinite social value must be placed on the prevention terrorism.

- You are 17,600 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack
- You are 12,571 times more likely to die from cancer than from a terrorist attack
- You are 11,000 times more likely to die in an airplane accident than from a terrorist plot involving an airplane
- You are 1048 times more likely to die from a car accident than from a terrorist attack
-You are 404 times more likely to die in a fall than from a terrorist attack
- You are 87 times more likely to drown than die in a terrorist attack
- You are 13 times more likely to die in a railway accident than from a terrorist attack
-You are 12 times more likely to die from accidental suffocation in bed than from a terrorist attack
-You are 9 times more likely tochoke to death on your own vomit than die in a terrorist attack
-You are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist
-You are 8 times more likely to die from accidental electrocution than from a terrorist attack
- You are 6 times more likely to die from hot weather than from a terrorist attack
Because everyone in the US is at the same risk to meet their demise via the listed possibilities.

You know why I'm not 87 times more likely to die from drowning? Because I know how to fucking swim.

You know why the Amish aren't 8 times more likely to die from accidental electrocution? Well I think you can figure that out.

I was waiting to use single person restroom. Dude finished, I walk in. He's pissed all over the toilet seat. Great. I use paper towels to lift lid; I'm not wiping it down, that's gross. I walk out and cleaning lady is waiting. Now she thinks I pissed everywhere. Rustled...

Why the hell are you listening to the professor's personal life? If your professor is talking about his/her personal, you have a shitty professor.

And somewhere on the Internet that guy is posting on a forum about how he went to a single person restroom and someone had pissed all over the seat, so he used paper towels to lift the lid. And when he walked out, this guy was standing there waiting and now that guy thinks he pissed everywhere.

You guys crack me up.

So statistically I have the same chance, living in CT, of dying in a Tornado, as someone who lives in the Midwest? I guess you guys think demographics are useless?

When you post a blanket statement saying "Everyone in the United States has the same chance of dying to certain disease or natural phenomenon as everyone else in the United States regardless of any demographic information" it's falty.

But yea, you're right. Someone in Alaska has the same chance of dying of heat exhaustion/exposure as someone living in Miami.

And no shit people who know how to swim drown, but it's a lot less likely than someone who doesn't know how to swim drowning.

If you don't know how to swim you won't go in the water, which means your chance of drowning is virtually 0! If you are a good swimmer you'll splash around constantly and risk all the terrible hazards of the depths!

It's pretty clear that you don't understand probability.

An estimated probability doesn't imply that everyone has the same risk, it just means that's the AVERAGE risk for the given population. Literally, the definition of risk in population A =number of events in population A/number of people at risk in population A (where "at risk" means it could theoretically happen to you). For example, you can have estimate risk of breast cancer in the united states (the given population). The estimated risk would be somewhere between the estimated risk for men and for women, but that doesn't mean it's "wrong" to talk about an average risk for both sexes together. Sure, you can further characterize probability by listing different probabilities for different subgroups, but there will always be differences in risk in whatever population you're referring to.

TLDR risk is an average in a population. Ignorant people thinking they know what they're talking about rustle my jimmies.

Let me help you out Khane: "you" can be understood as "people in America" because that's who that person is directing it at. Of course he doesn't actually mean "you" because he can't refer individually to every reader at the same time.

It doesn't need to be precise because he's drawing a contrast to another event (death by terrorism). He's not a god damn actuary.

I fail to see how that particular post rustled Khane's jimmies so much. The overall point is obvious: for the average American, there are about a billion things more likely to result in your death than a terrorist attack, most of which government and individuals hardly do a thing to address. There should probably be a "WAR ON BLACK PEOPLE DROWNING", for example. But newp!

It was fucking obvious that it wasn't implying that everyone has the same and equal risks.
