It's avoidable, you just won't be able to do the tournament side quest. I just use the console to cheat -- winGwint(1) as soon as the match starts -- when it comes up in a quest.
I should start doing this, I've just been avoiding it like the plague after trying it a few times.

I've been doing literally everything else. Sometimes reloading to see how some major quests have different outcomes :p

I had a bitch of a time against the whore in the High Stakes quest. So much RNG required to win as she always starts with like 5 spies, tons of medics and dummies.

Odd question, but does Witcher 3 just absolutely kill anything else running in the background of your PCs? I've never seen a game that made my PC so sluggish when alt-tabbed out of it. It even kills the performance of my internet connection. I had a few movies downloading via FTP, I generally get my full 100mbs, no problem, but as soon as Witcher 3 fired up those slowed to a trickle, getting under 1 mbps. Anytime I alt-tab out to look up something in Chrome(a quest or whatever) it takes FOREVER to get any web page to load, and you definitely aren't going to stream any Youtube videos.

Seems odd, newer games like GTA5 don't cause any issues, my PC performs like there isn't a game even running when it is minimized in the background. And it's definitely not a hardware issue, I have a 4GB Nvidia 970, 32GB of RAM and an i5 3570k running at 4.8ghz. Something about Witcher 3 though, my PC can't do crap else while it's running.

They like to be special snowflakes and make their own super engine for each game, and they run like molasses every time. Crysis 3 looked sexy as hell and ran smooth as butter. These guys? Meh.

I alt-tab out all the time and don't have a problem running all kinds of other shit and I have less RAM than you do and a shittier graphics (nVidia GTX 690) card. Must be some other configuration thing you're running. Are you running at ULTRA graphics as well? It could be that.

Ifeverythingis running slow, sounds like your CPU is being pegged @ or near 100% for some reason. I have a similar system, (except an i7, but can't see how that would make much difference) and W3 (Ultra settings) only uses ~45% in the foreground and ~22% when alt-tabbed out. Fire up Task Manager and watch the CPU utilisation graphs, will show you both in-game and alt-tabbed %. If it's pegged, then check to find what process is swamping the CPU. Shouldn't be W3. That's where I would start anyway. Good luck!

I've not seen anything like that either. I close Pale Moon before starting the game up, but if I need to tab out and open a browser while playing it still only takes ~5 seconds to open. That's with the TW3 process set to high priority too.

Yeah while I haven't checked the CPU usage I can't really browse while the game is running. Everything variably lags. Also anyone crashing like crazy with the latest patch? Had about 4-5 crashes last night.

XP bug is NOT fixed. Suggested level and actual quest level still do not match, which means you still see quests like Pyres of Novigrad at suggested level 10 when it is really a level 7 quest for reward purposes. Complete it at level 13 and it's green in the log but is really grey due to being 6 levels below. The only thing that changed is I got 5 xp for it now instead of 0.

From what I've seen on reddit, there's a good chance that's related to nvidia drivers. I've not had a single crash ever, but I use AMD.

I'm tabbed out of the game right now. 1 core pegged at 100%, the other 5 cores are at ~10%. 20-22% total CPU usage by the TW3 process. Using Pale Moon to browse forums and reddit is the same as it is when the game is not running at all.

Yeah I have a CPU monitor widget, and I'm generally at 45-50% usage while playing, and about 30% alt-tabbed out. I don't get why Witcher 3 kills my internet connection though, when it's not even an online game. That's the strangest part, throttles my bandwidth down to like 1% of my max

Interesting, just finished patching and my CPU utilisation has dropped significantly. Full gallop on Roach through the forest spinning the camera around as before, and in-game % had dropped to ~30%, and tabbed out has dropped to ~16%. That's a big improvement.

Also checking with graph divided into logical processors, all 8 cores seem to be running fairly evenly around 20-25%, with spikes going into the 30s and 40s, but nothing over 50%. That tells me they have created a very sweet engine.

*edit - just checked to see if the patch had nuked all my settings down to low, and nope, nothing has changed. Impressive.

That is really weird. Just ran an OOKLA Speedtest on my connection with W3 running in the background, and both d/l and u/l speeds are running at full speed with no glitches. Sorry, can't figure that one out.

I must have misunderstood the XP Bug, I thought it was affecting quests that were even the correct level for the character, and halting peoples' progress. I didn't realise that the weird rewards level issue was recognised by them as part of the "bug", that they were fixing. *edit* Remember reading (many many pages back) about -3 rewards but didn't think that was part of the bug, if that makes more sense.

Here's a more complete description of the quest xp problem:PSA: Explanation for what causes the XP bug : witcher

They did fix some of them. For example, I was playing on PS4 last night and completed the swamp quest (suggested level 6) at level 11. It was marked level 5 in the rewards table last night and so I got 0 xp for it. Today I redid the turn in and I got 160 xp for it, and checking the PC files reveals that it is now level 6. Not sure why I lost 20%, since the final step rewards 200xp; maybe they put in scaling xp% reduction based on how many levels above the quest you are. Will need to test further.
