Studios are definitely top heavy and corrupt as fuck. The only good thing that happens is independent studios emerge and start distributing creative works without influence of woke money. Problem is I'm sure, just like most other big industries, is its been regulated to hell. Not to stop corruption, but to stifle competition.

We live in a society where everyone thinks THEY should be paid MORE but everyone ELSE should be paid LESS.
I think pretty everyone should be paid quite a bit less, that may include me.

The lifestyle creep in this country during my lifetime alone has been ridiculous and gross.

Everyone is about to learn that ride ends eventually. AI is just going to be adding a few more gallons of lemon juice to the salty pool at the end of the razor blade slide.

From Make America Great Again to "we should all be poorer, actually."

How do you hold this shit in your tiny brain at once without it falling out?

PS: If you like everyone being poorer than you should fucking love Biden.

If you're not working 12 hours a day in the coal mine until you die at 42, then you didn't really live a worthy life.

I wonder if theres ever been a discussion you lasted longer than 2 responses before you turned it to shit.

You made a non-partisan statement about peoples attitudes towards wealth. I responded, disagreeing, but again having not a goddam thing to do with partisan politics.

But yeah, lets quick change the subject to MAGA vs Biden instead. Super interesting and intellectually honest. Always a pleasure.

It's not partisan politics, both sides have been making us all poorer for a while.

You should be happy about it, given your 'logic' here.

You're not really worth arguing with. You're not saying anything that hasn't been said better by others, and you're using too many words to do it.

Sure thing, Mist. Exactly what I would expect from someone losing an argument because of shitty takes. Next time maybe you can find someone that agrees with 90% of the dumb shit you say so you will feel like the "argument" is worth it.

This is dumb logic. If the studios can make infinite copies of your work and continue to sell it forever, you should continue to get your cut forever, no matter how small and stupid that cut is.

Copyright for movies and TV is 70 years. If copyrights were a lot shorter, the "no residuals" idea would make more sense.
Yeah, just like in every other field, right?

When you go to work, you get a cut of the product you helped produce, right? The company continues making money on something you helped develop, so it's only fair you get a piece!

It's not directly comparable.

In most fields, you don't get to make infinite copies of someone's work without putting in more work to produce those copies. In movies and TV, you make something once and then sell it for 70 years with no limitations on scarcity.

In other fields for purely intellectual contributions, you generally still continue to be employed and collect a regular paycheck at the place where you produced the work, based on your past, current, and future productivity.

Most people are applying bad metaphors here. Follow your bad logic out to its conclusions and you've got everyone in the world working like they're Doordash drivers. Piecemeal employment for everyone!

Hey as long as they go bankrupt and suffer if they produce terrible products I'm all for it. Make them commission only.

The current royalty arrangement was not what Hollywood originally offered, and it wasn't until "Big Name Actors" and such became a thing and unionized and lawsuits flew that the royalty system became a thing. The system worked until it didn't. Now with infinite content generation and infinite idiots lining up to 'act' for a living the studios rightfully want to change. There will be some who can leverage their fame into big bucks. There will be new studios that offer different arrangements. Hollywood itself may die, but new shit will be put out. Roll with the times or be rolled over by them.

But it was a one time job, right? Was anyone in Hollywood expected to go back to work on that same project without extra compensation even once? No. If you did well, you get other forms of compensation from people's enjoyment...which Hollywood actors have taken advantage of for about a century. "But they need more!" Actually, they don't.

What other fields have purely intellectual contributions? Teachers? They do more than just talk and think, right? Who else has purely intellectual contributions in any employment field? No one, right? It's making your intellectual contributions work through other means, is it not? Planning involves more than just paper napkins, does it not? Productivity is what brings the payment, does it not? I believe that's how it really works.

Most employment is not like Hollywood at all, so your metaphors suck. Bring on the AI.

I don't think you know what you're talking about.

The current arrangement that is causing all the lost royalty payments from streaming platforms goes back to a 1988 deal about direct-to-cable and direct-to-video store movies. Those were considered bottom-tier movies so of course they gave bottom-tier residuals. Now first-run movies are being released direct to major streaming services, it's a totally different environment.
Most employment is not like Hollywood at all
Thanks for agreeing with me.

SAG released a list of their demands and the AMPTP response, and my favorite one was SAG asked for them to start paying them on time, and the AMPTP response was "We know we absolutely never pay on time, but we are unwilling to fix that"

Would be nice to see the AMPTP responses in their own words instead of this reworded garbage.

Hope the "influencers" get fucked the hardest. Worthless turds piggybacking off movies/TV to make money while never leaving their house. Hope this strike changes the whole industry and gets rid of the useless people.
