It's too bad they didn't come up with the turn-based idea back when Judgment was in development. I think it would have worked out better that way to have the spin-off series use the new combat and keep Yakuza the same.
Judgment is a spin off, you meet a few characters from Yakuza and the setting is Kamarucho so its all the same locations, heavy asset reuse from Y0 and/or Y6.
Its a decent game, I don't like it as much as the Yakuza series but its basically more of the same. If you like Yakuza you'll like it, if you didn't like Yakuza... you won't. Its main story is weaker imo, but the side stories and detective mode stuff are fun.
Yakuza Like A Dragon (Y7) is imo the best game of the series, especially for the huge QoL improvements, the excellent English VA, and goofy main character. The combat is a bit wonky but I've never thought the Yakuza real time combat was amazing, just kinda fun in a "mortal kombat mash buttons" kind of way.
Original release of Judgment used Dragon Engine, same as YK2, Y6, and Y7. XSX/PS5 remaster is an even more updated version, more or less the same as what LJ will use. Judgment on XSX already looks much nicer than YK2, so LJ should be the same or better still.
a bit lower on the review scale than i thought it'd be, game releases in a week 9/24/21
If there are less tailing missions then I am in. Got tired of them in Judgment.
Here's Skill Ups take. A bit more critical than other reviews.
Yeah, that's what got me off the fence even though I have no intention of playing the game right away either. I buy almost exclusively physical copies still and even though I don't give a shit about any of the other "collector" aspects of gaming I can't say no to a nice steelbook instead of another ugly plastic case.gamestop has a nice exclusive steelbook
