Yeah, I think I'm going for a OnePlusOne for sure now. I was hesitant about a Phablet to begin with and the price tag is a finisher for me. Anyone have invites?

How does this change in price help any of the manufacturers in the Google Play market? The customers will just buy a different phone similarly priced. I doubt there are many people hardup for Google Play editions of specific phones.

Hmmm, that Nexus 6 is a no-sale for me. Too big, too expensive. I don't really have much interest in the phablet type phones. Anything much bigger than 5" is IMO getting too big. The tablet looks appealing though, my Nexus 10 has been shitting out more and more frequently.

No one was buying any of the other Google Play versions of phones because the Nexus line was so cheap. When someone went to the Google Play store to buy a stock Android phone and their choices were an N5 for $349 or an S4 for $649, which do you think was selling better? Now that the Nexus phone will cost the same as the other manufacturers Play versions of their phones, they might sell more.

Why Google gives a shit is the real question. I can only guess that Google wanted a wider variety of stock Android devices and thought the other manufacturers would pull the plug on producing them w/o the pricing change to the Nexus line.

The other phones won't sell more, the Nexus 6 will just sell less(compared to the 5). All this does is give one more option to the incredibly tiny market segment that was already buying full price unlocked phones. Everyone else will just move on to the 1+1 or whatever Motorola's next mid-price offering is. I'll pay less for a lesser phone these days, cutting edge doesn't matter as much anymore, especially if they keep pressing ridiculous screen sizes.

God dammit. The best thing about the Nexus line was that they were the best priced phones on the market. Now Google went and fucked that up. Anyone want to bet that this is the worst selling Nexus since the advent of the Play Store to buy them?

I've never understood the screen resolution and clarity wars at all phone levels. I get it for the highest level phones, but why not make a mid-level for those who want performance and battery life over screen resolution? I would seriously have to consider upgrading to a phone that had 3GB RAM, a huge battery, 32GB storage, and a 5.2" 720P screen that didn't suck up so much battery life. No one will make that fucking phone, though. They just want to have dick swinging contests with over-priced phones that are incremental upgrades.

It is like they are choosing to ignore the history of the PC market that went through these exact same things. As soon as someone comes out with a working, modular phone it is over. When I can customize my components to the screen size of my choice I'll be super happy. This assumes that Google doesn't fuck project Aria up.

Nexus 6 doesn't interest me even before the price announcement. Way too big for my liking. I might have been slightly tempted if it came in at a low price but not at the current price. More than happy with my Nexus 5 for the time being.

The Nexus 9 however, I am going to buy. Attractive price point for me and something that is bigger than Nexus 7 for web browsing.

I'm still very interested in the N6, even if it does end up being $650. I still would have preferred a 5-5.5" 1080p display, but the 1+1 has that area covered. The problem is just getting one of the damn things. I't will be interesting to see if the N6 gets as much rom development as previous nexus phones, as a lot more people are going to balk at that price.

For the next few months I'll be content with playing around with Lollipop based roms on my N4. I would consider going back to stock, but I'm going to at least wait until there are compatible custom kernels for 5.0. I can't stand going back to the horrendous stock screen calibration of the N4.

Well I had planned to buy a Nexus 6 for sure. Now probably not since its essentially the same price as every other phone. Probably check out some other options.

I am still intrigued by the N6, but I am just going to have to wait and see how well it fits in my hand and pocket first. The price point is a bummer but not a deal breaker for me. I still prefer the stock Android over all the crap other phones come with. So once they make it into the stores I will go and check it out and then decide.

If I don't like it, I am not sure what I am going to get. I mean I have the N5 now so it isn't like I need a new phone by any means, I just like new toys.

Don't most popular models get an AOSP port eventually? I mean, it's third party, but they're usually stable due to the popularity requirement to even partake such a project.

Depends on the carrier but most of the newer devices are getting locked down hard on the major carriers.

Root usually comes but if the boot loader is locked down no custom ROMs, custom kernels or recovery is possible. Everything is just a variant of stock which can suck.

Why do they lock phones down? I genuinely don't understand it and it really pisses me off. Why can't I just do what I want with my phone? How does it benefit them?

The carriers don't want you removing their shit apps and whatever apps paid to be included in the stock rom. Plus they want you to have as little control of your phone as possible so you have to pay them for extra things that you could do with an unlocked and rooted phone.

Depends on the phone. N5 has a locked boot loader and they were able to unlock it.

I honestly don't mind any particular carriers BS proprietary apps if they are subsidizing the cost of my phone. Note 4 for $200? Put whatever ridiculous crap you want on it. But the trend now is everyone moving away from subsidies and if they think I'm going to pay full retail price for a phone AND let them put their bloatware on there, they are sorely mistaken. If I'm paying $700 for a damn phone, I want it to be a pure android experience

Almost all phones come with a locked bootloader, except maybe the 1+1. Those can be as easy to unlock as using ADB to /fastboot oem unlock (Nexus devices), or something a bit more involved but doable. I think Kedwyn really means encrypted bootloaders that some manufacturers use, which are very difficult to bypass.

I know you know that they aren't subsidizing it. You're paying for full price of that phone over 2 years, and then some. Some carriers are finally discounting their postpaid plans if you bring your own phone.

Encrypted, thanks, could not think of the word.
