How are the Bears/Packers great rivals right now? Aren't the Rodgers led Packers something like 10-2 against the Bears? That's more of a 1 sided bitch slapping.

Going forward the Niners/Sehawks could turn into a good rivalry, but for now it's just 2 good teams in the same division. They've only been in the same division since 2001 or whenever the realignment happened and hadn't been good in the same season until last year, so there was never any real rivalry.

BTW, the 9ers would have won both Rams games if it wasn't for Akers missing very makeable field goals. If the new guy can make field goals over 35 yards that will make a pretty significant difference.

Bear vs. Packers history kind of pushes the Bears suckage out of the way a bit. Plus both teams are usually at least competitive and play for playoff spots that makes the games at least interesting. Which is why it's borderline. Good combination of history and team relevance make it that way.

Even though they are both irrelevant teams right now, and have been for several years (can you feel this coming?) the best historical rivalry is Chiefs vs. Raiders.

Raider Hater for life, yo.

BTW, Famm, I hope the Ravens destroy and humiliate the Broncos. I'd also like Manning to break a hip.

Big problem with the Niners/Seahawks rivalry is that this is really the first time since they realigned the divisions that both teams have been good. Lack of history combined with a lack of competitive games doesn't make for a storied and intense rivalry. Carroll and Harbaugh brought in their own history to infuse some life into the rivalry and now both teams are finally good. Best rivalry in football, not even close. The best rivalry this season, I think so.

Hell, as a Niners fan, up until a couple of years ago I got more satisfaction out of the Niners beating the Cowboys then I did beating any of the current NFC West teams.

Carroll & Jim Harbaugh together is such a perfect set up for a rivalry. Both extremely out going, 100% candid, and not afraid to celebrate right in your face.

For a (rational?) homer's perspective of Bears vs Packers,

The historical angle: The Packers and (what would become) The Bears played their first game in 1921.That's almost a fucking century ago!Mygreat-grandfathergot into bar fights with Bears fans when FDR was president. FDR! I can't take any argument that teams that only got put together in this century are one of the great rivalries seriously.

The quality angle: To be honest, The Bears and Packers being simultaneously quality teams is a rarity. Which (somewhat counter-intuitively) makes it a better rivalry:
If the Steelers or Ravens beat each other, you go, "Yeah, they're both good teams."
When what you consider a speed bump bottom dweller, considers you to be their personal Super Bowl for the year, and totally blindsides you, that stings way worse.
When you're both shit, those are the only games on the schedule that matter.

That's pretty much the same deal with the Redskins and Cowboys. There have been so many periods where one or neither team is competitive that it kind of cheapened the rivalry. The 70's were decent for both teams. 80's saw the Redskins win 3 Super Bowls and Cowboys kind of suck. 90's the Redskins collapsed and the Cowboys won 3 Super Bowls. 00's both teams were pretty shit. It looks like the Redskins may start to be competitive again and the Cowboys are still middling. They may be on the downswing though.

That said, it seems like the teams play each other very hard and provide for some exciting ass games. Even if the players say they don't really see each other as rivals, I think the fans kind of get the teams pumped up for those games. Like, a month out they probably aren't even thinking of each other. But the fans get all hyped about it and it rubs off on the team.

Even if the Bills are shit I will always hate them. Hate the fucking Jets no matter what also. Patriots, hate them too, but I don't know if that's because they are division rivals or because I want to be Tom Brady.

Here's hoping the Dolphins go at least 9-7

Spot the fuck on. Now that I'm back in WNY I'm reminded of how intense the rivalry between Buffalo and Miami is. Quite literally the only game that has mattered for the last dozen years for these fans.

The best rivalry in the NFL is the players/teams/fans vs Goodell, though it's pretty lopsided as Goodell has kicked their ass over and over.
