Your anecdote doesn't disprove the point when you take into consideration the context of the market in 2004-2006. If you got griefed in WoW, where are you going to go? Lineage 2? Dark Age of Camelot? Same thing is going to happen in those places, and that's assuming that the player knows those games even eixst, and that they can overcome the social pressure of basically every other person they know playing WoW. But in today's market, there is way more competition and it's easier than ever to try other games, so PvP games that don't implement anti-grief measures are basically doomed to fail.
EverQuest 2 baybeeee!

I bought a new PC for that shit!

They’ll probably punish targeted harassment, but I foresee a lot of PvP oriented “they’re the guild leader, we’re assassinating them” excuses given out

Why are you guys arguing about griefing when Steven already said griefing will be against the rules and bannable?

FOH didn't play Rallos Zek but a few can attest enforcement was brutal in 1999-2000.

Everyone who pvp'd long enough ended up banned. Just depended on how much pvp you were doing to determine how long you last. Every part was reported to GM's and investigated.

Nirgon Nirgon was there for it. He retired from pvp halfway through launch with a convenient name change and fresh reputation. I took the name change route myself.

I can tell the whole story sometime.

A lot of this is true.

As a random pk, you could expect intense scrutiny from GMs.

Interestingly enough, the guild war at the end in Velious was way more toxic and pvp filled with people having nuclear meltdowns than really anything else from "little league stuff" from Nektulos, commons or Karanas.

We had Ozuri (head of CSR) ban pvping in raid zones, directing all staff to shut a raid zone down and send everyone to their binds/issue warning if pvp happened during a raid. This was raid vs raid, individual sneaks coming and dispelling raid mobs (wiping a raid if you dispelled slow was considered mass griefing/intentional XP loss and was like a 2 week(?) suspie).

All I can say really is this, eventually either one side loses or the GMs lose it and start banning people from the more aggressive side even if they stay within the originally stated rules. I saw similar ultra melters with an entire news letter shaming behavior on EQ2 Deathtoll TLP (pls someone find that thing lmao) These kinds of things are extremely high enjoyment and stress for a portion of the player base and a *nightmare* for CSRs and losing subs because people/guilds get griefed off. Let me be clear too, we really intentionally stalked and harassed the hell out of people with devious ambushes to kill and item loot them or absolutely terrorize them in every way.

Honestly I'd have to ramble for a few hours to share the absolutely fascinating foray I had into the RZ experience and the human elements of it.

So a tried and true Duping bug(A few of them?) that revolves around server lag reared it's head this past play weekend. One of my concerns was how Intrepid would deal with this kind of issue as it plagues most games. Steven posted a letter concerning the issue and how it was dealt with.

Good evening,

As many testers are aware, last weekend we introduced a bug into the game that allowed for several dupes to exist. As I have said in the past, our velocity to deploy fixes is a direct correlation to the possibility of introducing new bugs into the live version of Alpha Two. We are working hard and fast, to address the most pressing issues we identify with the help of our glorious testers each weekend. Unfortunately, some testers took advantage of this situation, attempting to exploit these bugs in an effort to dupe materials, gain gold, generate node treasury funds, and craft legendary equipment. Some testers did the right thing and reported the issues to us, but the damage was already done to our test environment.

As a result of these bad actors, we have since wiped all duped materials, removed all legendary item IDs that were created with duped materials, reset treasury amounts for the offending nodes, initiated emergency elections in nodes where buildings were created with ill gotten treasury and supplies, and I have deleted over 100 characters that were found to have participated in the exploitative activity numerous times. If you purchased or received items from these exploits you will find those missing. If you gained gold via the exploits, your gold was reduced to 0.

The testers who participated in this activity, must understand that doing this harms the game. A game which YOU obviously care about. I have warned in the past, and it exists in our EULA and ToS that cheating, RMT and exploiting will be dealt with harshly. Everyone should be happy to know, that as a company, we care for the integrity of our players achievements. And as such it is necessary for us to stay vigilant in the tools we create that help us monitor and address these issues.

Let this serve as a warning. And take it from someone who themselves has been banned from games. Ashes will be different. So don’t partake. Instead report it. And play safe my friends.

Thank you

I do appreciate that it was at least handled. This is Alpha testing and so finding these kinds of bugs is what Alpha is about. Exploiting them is not what it is about. I hope this is dealt with in a similar manner when the game actually goes live.

pking will never work on an MMO when you have cheaters. It's a good idea because you need a time sink to stop guilds from progressing too fast. people will become gank boxes and then get mad because they cant beat or join them so they quit. The thing is with Steven came to rescue of Asmon because of who he was. If it was Gigabear or some else banned from the discord. Would have Steven saved them too. After they paid their money, discord isn't part of their games in the beginning. But you now have to use it as the part of the game for login. People aren't given an option

After all the BS with New World I love seeing the dupes 😂. Steven talked a lot of shit about NW when his own game is going through the same paces. Just wait until near release and meta builds and DPS are all over the place. Every MMO has adjusted their critical hit/critical damage modifiers in some way, AOC will be no different.

New world has gotten better recently. It was Shakey in the beginning. Remember they have access to bezos money. Elon plays diablo 4 and is ranked 10 in the world currently. Whales will keep it alive.

That sucks. I didn't play on RZ for very long, but the one memory I have of it was a plane of fear break that was also part guild war. If you thought breaking into fear was hard, try doing a CR when there's a couple dozen people in the zone also trying to kill you, and all of your gear is shit cause you only equipped the no drop stuff.

Seems weird to ban people who are paying to test your game who use dupes. It's not like the game is live. Who fucking cares? If anything it's probably good to see what happens outside a controlled environment.

It happens on the emus too, even the PvE ones if one side becomes too dominant they put their finger on the scale. Never forget there's a human element.

RZ pvp ruleset is IMO the only type of pvp server that could do well. Factions, maybe, but +- 6 or so levels makes it to where everyone and everything is more equal until people become raid geared.

I thought they werent perma banned?
I thought so too. How can you ban an account if the game is not released. I would think they were suspended for a time frame. There is a separate discord full of banned accounts. People like Gigabear. He doxxed Steven on his Twitter. Then there was a 95 PG PowerPoint about Gigabear. I understand both sides of the story. They were both at fault but Steven has money. The game doesn't impress me because the toxic people in their discord.

I am going to converse here. Pvp only lasted because of the gold farmers in early EQ. When they started hunting gold farmers did market turned sour. But the companies didn't know how to manage it . IE Live Gamer.

It's called I am in PI I get a free pass. If Steven were interested in doing the right thing jahlon and friends would been banned a long time ago. The 95 PG PowerPoint on gigabear should have been enough for me. Steven played him until Narc became his new sandal licker.
