I guess I need to get a road bike now that I am in the TX hill country I see them fairly often. Never lived anywhere people actually bike on a road.

Didn't I post that recently? I know I saw it.

Here's my thing, on the road I want a lot of pressure to avoid excess stress on the wheel and to avoid flats. I'm not trying to win races so those things are more important to me and that means maxxing out the pressure in the rear and going as high as I can in the front while still having a bit of cushion to ease the stress going into your hands/wrists/arms. So it doesn't matter to me, high pressure all the way.

On the trail I'm tubeless and I think its well established now, for 29'ers at least, that low pressure high volume is the way to go for traction and comfort. So as low as possible for your weight without risking the rim.

Yep. I don't obsess over the speed aspect of pressure on the road. I run 100psi, because I find it to have a little extra give if I hit a pothole without being too soft. I also run Gatorskins, which the shaved-leg-cervelo-douches frown upon but fuck 'em.

On the trail, low PSI is king. If you're slow on the trail, it's not because of your tire pressure.

It's because I'm fat, isn't it.

I had looked at the gatorskins, but the ones the shop showed me didn't have the tread I wanted (because GRAVEL RAWR RAWR!).

I've had fantastic luck with them. Road only, but over 2000 miles on this tire - no flats (knock on wood, I know i just fucked myself) and it still has plenty of life left. I'll throw on a new pair in the spring anyway and keep this one as a spare. Even the rear (which has about 400 trainer miles on it now) is still in rideable condition. Freakin' great tires.

I run a gatorskin on the back of my little commuter/errand runner which I've also used for a bunch of crushed gravel path riding as well even though its a road bike frame. I put a bit beefier CX wheel on the back with a 25 gatorskin. Bombproof tire, but for my strictly road riding bike I run 23's in the Vittoria Rubinos or Zaffiros. I've found those offer a decent balance of TPI, durability and wear without being too expensive. Generally always good deals on them, I just got a backup Zaffiro Pro from Chainlove the other day for like $16.

Zaffiro pros are a solid bargain tire, I usually run them on my front. If gator skins aren't your thing, look up the panaracer t-serv tire, it's got tons of grip while still offering some good flat resistance. I've ran it on my commuters rear tire for like a year now with maybe 2 flats.

I run about 80f/90r on my 25s but I like the squish.

Winter has been murder on my wallet. All this trainer/treadmill and sitting around makes me end up finding "irresistible good deals" that I should probably resist, but cabin fever gets the best of me. I ordered up new Ultegra cranks and a set of Industry 9 hubs for my road bike today. Figure I'll lace 'em up next week and then stare at them on the trainer for another month at least until all this fucking snow up here goes away.

The good news is that they're anodized blue!

Anybody have experience with Gunnar frames? I'm thinking about building a bike on their Hyper-X frame this spring, but don't know anyone with personal experience.

I use Continental Grand Prix tires and I've ridden about 3-4k miles on them. I've not had a flat since I bought my bike -- which was back in very early 2013. I would recommend it to everyone.

It's almost back to pre-shitstorm conditions up here. Great riding all over the place. So much better than the fucking trainer, even though Zwift has taken some of the edge off. Feels damn good to go fast again.

Enjoy your creaky bike.
Actually its a bike I've owned since 2010, full suspension 29'er, and I've only really developed a creak down there once. I pulled the crankset that time, cleaned and regreased everything real good and it was good to go for a long time again. I used it some this fall/winter, got back from a muddy ride and found the cranks being very sluggish and just set it aside awhile. Pulled the crankset this week since its snow everywhere and I have cabin fever anyway, drive side bearings completely seized. Four years on a BB through dirt and climbing over rocks isn't too bad I guess. Just annoying that I had to get shit to tap the fucking thing out and press the new one back in. My hardtail and roadbikes are external SRAM BB's that just thread into the shell.

Anyone see the Lauf shocks? They look interesting but I'm not sure how they can be that springy or strong....

Interesting concept, but best I can tell you can't lock out their wonky-looking top end one. For $1000 I want that option.
