So I finally made it down to Portland and grabbed a bike. Ended up with a Foundry Auger for $1300. So far I love it. Now just need to get my legs back into shape.

very pretty. I was drooling over one of the preproduction overlands earlier.

Damn, that's a nice looking bike. Maybe it's an optical illusion but what's the gearing? The big cog looks massive.

ya, it is 50/34. Was a bit out of it last night. Picked up a nasty ass head cold and been drinking NyQuil like its candy

What do you commuters use for bags? I'm looking at this:Large Commuter Backpack | Banjo Brothers

I really wanted one of the Swobo backpacks, and if they ever become available again I'll swoop in and buy two probably:Hobo | Swobo

I think I might move to some panniers and a rack on my commuter, because I've already got fenders, a saddle bag that's ridiculously large, and a front rack. Biggest problem is that I'll probably commute once or twice a week at most, and it's 60mi round trip.

With a commute that long I'd opt for some panniers with a rack because any bag is going to start to get uncomfortable with any sort of load over those distances. Only issue I might have is leaving the bicycle with the rack and panniers outside for extended lengths if you can't bring it inside with you.

What all would you be carrying? Change of clothes/shoes and your lunch?
Laptop, clothes, shoes, maybe lunch.

I've got the following:
small front rack (that I'd rather not use)
Viscacha seat bag (Revelate Designs LLC- Seems like it might be overkill, but I can fit a shitload in it)
Tangle frame bag equivalent (Revelate Designs LLC- Local guy makes the same bag in custom colors)

The frame bag keeps spare parts, tubes, phone(s), wallet, keys, etc; it has some open space. I was going to put shoes and a rainfly some other misc gear in the Viscacha. I'm ignoring the front rack because it's only for "6lbs or less" and I don't have straps or anything for it (yet).

Outside probably isn't a problem. While the campus isn't gated, it's out in the middle of the affluent suburbs and under 24x7 video surveillance. I lock the bike up and could bring the panniers inside. I've got spare space to keep them at my desk or in a locker inside (desk probably). I hang up the cycling clothes in the day lockers so they can air out/dry up.

I'd probably just get a rear rack and some Ortlieb panniers, they have quick mounts on them so you can just unclip and carry with you. They also come in two(maybe 3?) different sizes.

I use a backpack for my commute but it's only ten miles RT.

Gonna try to revive this guy, it was a gorgeous day out and I had to reglue some tubulars so I decided to do it outside. It was a good choice, enjoy my jorts.

Got my new cranks/Praxis BB on today. Stoked to be under 20lbs, but man - that .04 pounds is going to cost a fucking mint. Thinking carbon bars might be my best/cheapest option just for the sub-19 placebo effect.

It's cheaper to cut 4oz of body mass...

also 4oz is 0.25 pounds.

Of course it is, but there are no bragging rights there sir! This shit is important!

Riding season is here and I do 8-10 hours of cardio a week. I'm not worried about cutting body mass. Spring/summer is basically "Fuck yes, I ate right all winter, now I will crush Chipotle twice a week if I want to" season.

Yep. Doing my first commute to work so far. The planning is getting a little baffling but I finally got a backpack I like: shop.swobo.com/collections/accessories/products/hobo

It's a haul (~55mi round trip), but I'm hoping it won't be too bad.

Jealous as hell. My commute is about 50 each way via the interstate.

I'd LOVE to be able to ride to work.
