A lot of the reason comes from "do it to them before they can do it to you". It's literally as old as our history. Some of the founders wanted to opt out and avoid it (and we did for generations mostly thanks to there being an insane amount of land on this continent occupied by disorganized tribes), others were more practical and realized it is not the sort of thing that can ever be avoided. They did talk about this with each other, even though none of their grandchildren were ever going to live to see it. The Pax Americana. Peace through subtle terror of how crazy we might get under stress if this is how crazy we are during the GOOD times, and peace through the simple fact that all in all these actually are the good times.

There is less carrot than there used to be and that is a significant threat to peace.

Don't you remember directly following 9/11 how the European Press was honestly predicting (and somewhat fearful of, tbh) that America was about to go insane.

And then we went insane... but it may have been a bit more flailing than they expected.

Even someone with just the tiniest bit of color, like 1/32 black, can claim they're black as long as it's visible, when in reality they're just no race at all (a modern hybrid), or if they need to be called one of their parent races, it should obviously be white, where the other 31/32 came from. But no, tell me again about white privilege, when any person on the planet with a tiny bit of black in their hybrid self will claim they're just "Black."
