Yeah GW2 was a disappointment in the open PvP department. They hyped it up massively, then did absolutely nothing to support it or build on it after release. That said, WAR was even worse. I sometimes wonder if any of these devs actually seriously PLAYED DAoC, they all completely miss the mark on what made it fun. DAoC was awesome because the RVR was designed in such a way that you had constant variety and constant challenge, you could play the same character and you had almost a completely different game depending on whether you ran out solo, small group, 8 man, zerg, etc. And because of the free flowing nature of the RvR zones, you were always fighting different people in different places. Then you had the RR system, which scaled the rewards almost perfectly, to the point where you felt like you were progressing from the work you put into your character, but you didn't have to grind heavily to remain competitive. And the way the game and classes were designed made the gameplay really intense and face paced, you really had to be on your toes.
The (major) problem with GW2, imo, was that they seemed to miss all that entirely. Their WvW devolved into 2 or 3 massive zergs smashing against eachother, occasionally overpowering different objectives. The zones were so cramped and divided up that you couldn't roam freely and there was no room for small group or solo play, no room for maneuvering, it was primarily a numbers game. Then you throw in the lack of reward system and faction distinction and the weekly resets, and it got old pretty quickly.
Hopefully by now they've actually caught onto what made DAoC so awesome, but I doubt it. In the meantime, I reopened by old DAoC account, they're down to one server but there's still a fair bit of action there.
