Ordered all the parts to my ultra portable PC, so now I'm just waiting on more 1080's to be available. I'll just use my old graphics card in the meantime.

My new pc is 90% up and running.

had to wait on sata cables, which I didn't consider didn't come with parts. never had to buy them separate with previous machines.
Also still waiting on Displayport cable, for 2nd monitor. Also my own fault for not double checking on what cables I had.
new vid card has 1 dvi-d, 3 display port, and 1 hdmi.

Cintiq is dvi-I. But does come with dvi-I to Dvi-d adapter, and I checked on that for sure. (but seriously, wtf guys? why is dvi-d even a thing for male ends?)
other monitor however has, displayport, dvi-d, vga.

I have a displayport to minidisplay port, an hdmi cable, dvi-i to vga, etc, etc... but none in the right combination.

Wacom drivers were a bitch as well. 21ux not supported anymore. Thankfully had the old working ones saved in "downloads" still, and was able to transfer and install on win10.

I feel like the case could use a top fan. could/should buy one.

Does anyone here have an ultra modern build with NVMe SSDs, DDR4, thunderbolt etc ?

I would love to hear experiences, good/bad.

Over the last 5 years my Pc upgrade cycle has stalled completely (everything has seemed *fast enough*) and I my knowledge has stagnated and I need a little catching up on new desktop developments. I like AMD stuff and with Zen around the corner Im starting to feel the itch again but it will require at least an upgrade of MB and DDR4 and perhaps storage.

Should I bother bother upgrading from a sata SSD to NVMe ? What do people really use it for? Faster boot? What Games NEED what to run well?

Any other modern *must* haves out there?

ATM I have oldish 6-8 core AMD machines, max RAM DDR3 and SSD and a mix of 3 various sized monitors DP, DVI and HDMI, VGA
Everything running Linux with big ramdisks, save for a token Windows partition for compatability.
I have Slow HDs for volume storage served over dual GBe network and switch

Just got this email from Newegg about the 970 class action lawsuit:

We have been informed about a class action lawsuit settlement with NVIDIA regarding the GTX 970 graphics card. Newegg is currently awaiting details about the settlement claims process (instructions, website). Once we have this important information, we will send you a follow-up email with the specifics on how you can submit your claim.

I built a new rig two months ago to use in my VR room. Went with:
i7 6700k
Asrock Z170 Extreme4
GTX1080
16GB of GSkill DDR4-3000
Seasonic G-650 PSU
Samsung 850 500GB SATA SSD
Noctua NH-D15S cpu cooler
Fractal Design Define R5 case

Had issues getting displayport to work in bios and low resolution screens (like the windows 7 install menu), DVI worked better. Once in windows, all is fine. Seems to be Z170 chipset related from what I could find.
NVME seemed massive overkill for a gaming system, and not all BIOSes support booting from them, so I went with regular old SATA. I have no disc storage in this system at all, it's unbelievably quiet. Can barely tell it's on.

I still use my 3570K/GTX970 system for regular gaming and certainly for 1920x1080 that is still more than enough. CPU gains have been extremely minor since Sandy Bridge, most of the gains come from the GPU and faster SSD. As a one for one replacement I doubt I'd have been happy considering how expensive the above rig was ( close to €1900 with tax, big chunk of that was the €800 GPU though since that was the first week it came out).

Why do you need so many SATA ports? Just curious what your config is.

I am using a 512GB Samsung 950 Pro NVMe for OS / Games and a single 4TB drive for storage and torrent DL/UL.

top case fan is good, one time a drink spilled on top of my tower (i never keep drinks near pc, nephew came over), and my fan just kept on throwing that liquid up into the air. I was able to quickly take off the case side panel, take off my shirt and plug it right underneath the fan.

Not a single component was damaged, except the fans were of course soda sticky.

So, advice on buying vs waiting?

A couple of months ago I was talking about building a crazy powerhouse PC, and everyone advised me to wait a couple of months. Is it a good time now?

I'd have to dig up all the parts I was talking about, and I understand the next gen of video card is supposed to be even better, but my plan for that was to maybe buy a 1070 now, and in 6 or 8 months or whenever the new hotness comes about, I'll put the 1070 in the GF's computer and upgrade just that.

So, if I wanted to drop a couple grand into a disgustingly nice computer I might keep for 5 years, would you guys have suggestions?

I also decided to upgrade my monitor. I have a super nice Dell 32 inch thing that was something like $2k 10 years ago. Everyone still constantly tells me how much they love the picture, but it's 59Hz and the screen tears like crazy with no Vsync. I was reading that the Gsync is pretty massive, and more HZ = amazeballs. People were talking in a monitor thread about a monitor (I'll have to find it again) that was around $500 for a 27inch that was just widely re guarded as the best gaming monitor around. I was planning on getting that as well.

But, advice?

big windows 10 update aka Windows Anniversary aka patch 1607 has been out a few days, I updated today. takes like 30 minutes and 2-3 restarts, a lot of small minor tweaks in the UI, all of which seem mostly annoying but I guess you can quickly get used to them. Some people have had problems with Cortana not turning off after the update, but mine is still off. I did just notice that microsoft put edge and the windows 10 store back on my quick taskbar, no thanks Microsoft.

the start menu looks a bit more xbox / phone-ish now, with the regular list of stuff and then a little vertical bar with explorer, settings, power always on the left.

Which SKU of Windows 10 are you using?

If you're gonna drop a couple grand just get a 1080 (or 1070 and wait for 1080ti),one of those fancy 6 core Intel (5-series, forget the number), big ssd, lots of ram, water cooling, etc.

I'd just start with pc part picker and post it here

I'm always worried with big updates like that that they'll turn back on some of the bullshit privacy stuff I turned off.

Updated for me this morning, was looking forward to trying Bash on Ubuntu on Windows but couldn't get it to load before I had to leave for work
