I've been happy with my Soundblaster Z with the headphone amp, but the whole thing cost me 40 dollars.

Doesn't every audiophile who gives a shit about audio and listens to it on PC buy a soundcard?

everyone is like "but dat shit is free!!!"

no shit, and i'm a novice with this, but they still like it cuz the chips are better or more powerful and you get less "noise" if it's on a add in card rather than built on board and shit?

audiophile come in and defend your soundcards!

Not sure about rules for posting pics to this thread, but I got my system built enough to install Windows and do a burn test. Purring along under Prime95 at 60c. The NVME drive is ridiculously fast, so glad I splurged and bought one.

A lot depends on how good your onboard sound chip is. Some (usually expensive) mobos have really good ones. I have a Soundblaster Z and the difference between this and my onboard sound is night and day. Soo, yes i'd say getting a sound card if you don't have a decent onboard chip is totally worth it. The question really is what sound card to get. I am suspecting that getting just a cheap basic Soundblaster or Xonar is more than enough and everything above that just offers diminishing returns for normal use. Ofc the other part of the sound equation is having good enough speakers.

i mean my ears are no where near audiophile scrutiny, like i'd get "ok" scores on these audiophile tests
Is your audio system really ready for lossless?

i have a soundblaster xfi? from like 2003 or something still, i don't remember if they even really had onboard sound back then (i know they were just adding most network/sound onboard) but i had to get a xfi cuz i was raid leader and needed good sound/voice quality for obvious reasons.

I think i tried the realtek onboard shit in 2011, and it sounded like crap (cuz i wanted to have less cards in there), so i kept the xfi.

aren't most ppl now just piping their audio through HDMI now anyway? using lazy built in monitor speakers.

Looks like a SERIOUS upgrade, it will be a watercooled screamer movign from a laptop.

How long has is been you changed/upgraded the desktop itself?

Last time I had a desktop computer was... 2008? I had gone home for Christmas, forgot to close window to room. Came back to sub zero room temperatures, frost and a broken computer.
Used a laptop that I could take with me since :)

@person who spent $4500 for a pre-made, just do what I did. I didn't want the hassle either, so I just hired a guy to do it for me. He picked parts, I ordered, he picked up parts and I get a new computer finished set up with perfect wire solutions, drivers, windows and all the things up to date. Don't use a pre-set up site, just hire a guy that works there for a day :)

Just ordered 2 of these HP Pavilions.

Been using the same 24-inch 1920x1200 monitor for 10+ years it was really time for an upgrade. The best part is due to my new profession I actually need monitors like this to work with dimensional plans and plat maps. So going forward I will always be able to expense my PC upgrades :)

Or good headphones. I have a decent pair of Sennheisers that I used for awhile and they required a dedicated amp to power. Most onboard amps are shit, so dedicated card is definitely the way to go if you care about achieving any sort of fidelity. I ended up trading those for the Logitech G633 mostly because I can use them with my Xbone and PS4 one the same monitor.

Onboard chips have come a hell of a long way though, so it might be okay to ditch a dedicated card in some cases but there are still "issues" with them that make them sound shitty.

I built a PC extremely similar to this (same mobo/cpu and same speed of RAM) in the fall and I hit 4.5ghz without any real issue and I was also coming from a 920. You could probably start at trying to hit 4.6 honestly.

I'm stable at 4.5 right now on 1.32v which is pretty good to start. Burn testing right now with the x264 test and only hitting 58c. Going to push a little higher I think.

4500 is fucking retarded man

None of that is normal in any sense of the word

Cooling: 360 Sealed Liquid Cooling for 2011 Socket

CPU: Intel Core i7 6850K Hex-Core 3.6GHz (3.8GHz TurboBoost)

DUAL GPUs: 8GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition

Memory: 16GB ORIGIN PC DDR4 Powered by Kingston 2666MHz (2 X 8GB)

New issues

1. My optical drive doesn't even open
2. This thing runs so hot that the fans sound like a box fan running on high. I can't even have a conversation or listen to music at my desk without being distracted by the noise.

Holy shit I hate Origin PC...

That doesn't sound right for such an expensive computer.... No way you can get a refund?

Called the guy who is making my computer today, and he says it runs so quiet you can't really hear it unless in a room with no other noise. Any sound overshadows it. Which is good to hear because my "order" was a fast up to date gaming computer that is silent and keeps low temperatures under load. Delivery tomorrow.

I actually just filed a report with the BBB and called to request a refund.

Here's a summary of all the issues:

When I first ordered the PC none of the promises by customer service were kept:
1. No pictures of my PC being built were sent to me as promised
2. I was never updated as to the status of my order as promised
3. I had no idea when I would receive my order until I took it upon myself to reach out multiple times
4. Even after all of that it took them two weeks to "process" my order

Once I received the PC, problems continued:

1. It takes at least 2-3 minutes for it to boot up, with one of the best hard drives available
2. I've gotten several (4) black screens telling me the Origin overclocking software failed and that I need to reset it. Then I have to go into my BIOS and reboot the dang thing
3. My LED remote didn't work upon arrival and still doesn't work
4. The correct SLI connector wasn't shipped w my PC and Origin knew about it, but didn't inform me. They haven't made it right. I discovered this issue bc my second GPU wasn't getting picked up by benchamrk tests, so I reached out to support and instead of fixing the issue they told me they didn't have the right SLI in stock
5. The fans run so loud that the computer literally sounds like a box fan on high. For the record, this is a WATER COOLED system
6. The optical drive wouldn't open upon delivery and still doesn't work

Upon reaching out to Origin about these issues, I was told to do a "factory reset" of the PC...

R U SRS?

They took zero initiative to make any of my issues right.

So, that's what you can get for $4500.

Looks like you got the Millenium? note, your pc is NOT watercooled, your CPU is watercooled, your video cards are still using the factory fans, which is why it's sounding like that.

The Millenium has a total of 9 fans

3x in the top for the cpu/radiator

back fan
bottom fan
hd cage fan
1 per video card and psu fan

that however is not extreme, it sounds about right, there should be some settings on there for 50c/55c or something damned if i know where it's at from Googling.

^ You'd have to add watercooling to the GPU's as well to lower the noise. I can't say about those Nvidia's but my R9 390s require the fans to blast full steam ahead. I'm actually about to rebuild the case and watercool the whole goddamn thing.

For the optical drive, have you cracked open the case and made sure the dipshits actually attached it to the mobo?

I feel so bad for you. What part of the country do you live in? Rere Bros need to step up and get you some computer help. I'd build you one for free if you were in the Northwest USA. :)
