It's been over 8 years since I did a full system upgrade. Here's what I'm currently using:
  • Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.4 Ghz
  • 4 GB RAM
  • GTX 650

I'm looking for a great gaming system for under $2000 (Canadian schmeckles).

I don't entirely know what's the best value out there, so if you ask "why did you choose X?" my answer will be "i dunno ... what should I choose instead?"

Thoughts on this quick build?

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($453.70 @ Vuugo)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($38.25 @ Vuugo)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($189.99 @ NCIX)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($85.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Samsung 850 Pro Series 512GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($289.55 @ Vuugo)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Video Card ($617.28 @ shopRBC)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case ($99.99 @ NCIX)
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($119.99 @ NCIX)
Total: $1894.74

Remember ... CANADIAN DOLLARS. I don't get fat US deals here.

I hear a lot about i5 being perfectly fine for gaming, but I do like to do video editing and recording from time to time.

ALSOOOO.. .any thoughts on a a monitor? 27" and 144 hz.

Those prices make baby computer jesus cry

Yeah go with a 6700 if youre going to be video editing. And id go with a Define S(should be a few bucks cheaper) unless you need lots of harddrive space.

did you check benchmarks?

I work in photoshop heavily, and I actually found a benchmark showing the i5 6600 outperforming the i7 in windows 10. Although, it should be noted, PS is mostly ram, and scratch disk.
I got 32gb ram due to that reason. I would think video is also ram intensive? I looked around, and didn't find any clear answer which ram would be best. ddr 3 vs dd4. 16x2, or 8x4. no clue. (I got 3000Mhz ddr3, which again, damned if I know what that actually means.)
At the same time, the I5-6600 is only 300 in canada bucks. What is the limited factor for video? the CPU, or RAM? save 150$ buying an I5 instead of I7, and spend that 150$ on more, higher speed ram?

and yeah, only one SSD? 500gb is small isnt it?
I bought 4 storage for mine a few weeks ago... 500gb boot SSD, 128GB scratch disk SSD, 1 TB archive drive, 2 TB working drive.

Why Pro series SSD vs evo? I honestly don't know the difference. Evo is only 143USD though, 190 Canadabucks? Why you paying 100$ more for the pro?

then, maybe I counted wrong... but I have 4 drives, 32gb ram, also a 1070, and a 650 psu.
here put the parts together. estimated 410W max load. why do you need a 750psu with just one drive.

Not saying, buy what I bought, cause certainly some of my selections were shots in the dark. and I have not used any long enough to say good/bad, or even mess with overclocking, etc.

Well, the Pro would probably last 50 years for the average user, whereas the EVO might only last 30 years...

Seriously though, there's no point in any home user buying a PRO drive (unless you're doing the M.2 PCI-E version which IS actually faster than the EVO)

I have basically the same PC that you listed (different vendors on Mobo and GPU) and it's a pretty incredible PC. I approve.

I did throw in a few WD Blues for storage (they're like $35/TB here in freedom land)

I have an i7 2600k @ 3.40ghz. My mobo is gigabyte z68x-ud3h-b3. I have 8g of ram and a new asus 1070 strix. 600w ps. A 250g ssd, with 3 5400rpm 1t hdd.

Other than another 8gigs of ram, with a budget of ~500, what should I upgrade?

I have a massive tower case (cooler master sniper, I think) and I would like to make it an atx desktop case if possible.

Thanks!

I do video editing, 3ds max and some gaming.

The CM Sniper is actually a small mid tower case, when you say atx desktop case, do you mean you want a ITX or micro ATX case? as in you want to down grade to a small case, the size of 3 shoe boxes?

Mini-ITX would be perfect, if it will fit the card I got. I could always return it for a smaller form factor... I just liked the 3 fans on it. Not that I do any OC'ing.

Micro-ATX would be ok too...

You're gonna have to make concessions with M-ITX, obviously you'll need a new MB, best bet
ASUS P8H61-I R2.0 LGA 1155 Intel H61 HDMI USB 3.0 Mini ITX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS-Newegg.com

MITX, usually you'll need a new MITX power supply, would not have the room to fit a large video card (1070) and have 2 HD slots.

This one accepts regular atx power supplies, has room to accomodate large video cards 330m and can fit 2 hds and 1 sdd.
Phanteks Enthoo Evolv iTX Black Steel / Plastic Mini-ITX Tower Computer Case PH-ES215PC_BK-Newegg.com

MITX also, only has 2 memory slots, so if you wanted 16gigs you'd have to get a new 8x2/ 2 new 8gig sticks

case/mb/memory all over at like 80ish each

About to embark on building this today once I get my mobo/psu from FedEx. Already had the 980ti so no GPU upgrade for me until 1080ti releases. Hoping I can get at least 4.5Ghz out of the CPU, my last build was a i7-920 that I OC'd to 3.6Ghz for 7 years.

wow. people buy sound cards still?

Didn't buy it new, have had it for awhile. Board I had didn't have a built in amp so it was my only choice if I wanted decent audio. New mobo has a built in amp but I've read that it has some issues. Probably still use the card but lately I've been using USB headphones anyway, so who knows.

I built a PC extremely similar to this (same mobo/cpu and same speed of RAM) in the fall and I hit 4.5ghz without any real issue and I was also coming from a 920. You could probably start at trying to hit 4.6 honestly. I'm curious as to if you'll like the m.2. I've been eyeing them but still not able to justify that part yet.

That's comforting. The 6700k lottery is just so weird, so hopefully I get a good batch. Not sure how high I'll go but I'll push it as much as I can. I may delid if I have shit luck with temps, but I won't do that myself. SiliconLottery will do it for you for $50.

m.2 will be interesting. Going from an old SSD on SATA2 to this should be huge. I'll let you know how it goes. Mostly concerned with doing the Windows install on it...
