How much would I be gimping myself if I went with the i7-6700k instead of the 7700k?

I am a 1080p gamer running an i5-2500 (non k) and an R9 380 at this point. I'm looking to get 3- 5 years out of my next cpu/mobo/RAM purchase. I'll upgrade the video card as necessary.

you can get the 7700k for less than the 6700k if you have Staples Online pricematch Micro Center.

I just went from 2500k to 6700k before xmas and in some games there is a noticeable difference. Looking at a lot of the benchmarks for the Ryzen cpus you'll see the 6700k isnt far behind the 7700k if at all.

So I read one article that the i5-7600K is the better bang for the buck and performs fairly close to the i7-7700K. True? I'm looking to do a new build and stay around $1000 if I can.

only you can decide if it's worth it to you for the additional performance. however, based on what i'm seeing the 7600k is going for $240 while the 7700k you can get for about $300if you do it right, which makes the 7700k the easy choice there.

what are the advantages of Mist's 2x expensive power supply? fractionally more efficient? less likely to catch on fire?

Reliability, performance, protection.

Although, myself, I would not spend more than $100 for a PS. There are many around $100 that are great and reliable.

Ive had many over the years, and only one cheap one that failed me, but this was back int he Pentium 4 days. I think all 3 of my systems that I have now all run the mid level Corsairs of various wattages.

There's no reason for that PSU on a gaming rig.

People definitely eat up the hype about them but it's worthless to spend that much.

The more I read the more it seems my i5-4690k (stock) is fine for another gen or two of processors (and if anything, overclock it) and if I feel the need to splurge on something it's moving up to a 1080 Ti from my 980 Ti. Agree/disagree?

I can't imagine needing to upgrade the 980Ti unless you're trying to play at 4k

Ghost Recon at 2560x1080 I'm only running on very high to keep it closer to 50-60 fps, is really the only game recently that made me wish I had more power, tbh. I'm sure it'd let me do more supersampling w/ the Vive too. I know I could absolutely be fine w/ it for a while, more of a nice to have.

aren't there major performance issues from the engine in that game?

So all this talk about computer components in the past week, gave me a woody. Anyway, so last year I built my 12 yr old a PC 6600K and RX480 1080p build. Anyway my older kid is jealous now. So I have this 2500K system from like 6-7 yrs ago that I can give him, we just use it as a juke box mostly now. Its only going to be for 1080p type shit, he plays mostly steam FPS junk. Should I drop the extra $350 for a 6700K and new mo-bo (So like $550 with the video card as well) or should I just get the RX480 for the 2500k and call it good? Its got a 5850 in it right now, lol. I think its OCed to like 4.4 or 4.5 if memory serves me.

As long as that machine is still stable, it's more than enough to push a RX480.

Thanks Mist Mist Yeah thats what I was kind of leaning to. I can always drop the extra $350-$500 later on, like next year to upgrade it fully for him. It also needs a new SSD, since the one inside there is like a first gen crucial 120gig, I would like to upgrade that as well with something newer.
