Alright folks - I haven't built a rig since 2016. My primary gaming habits will most likely be PoE 2, Baldur's Gate 3 and 2010-2024 backlog. I do not play shooters for the most part and the vast majority of my past year was spent on Last Epoch, FFXIV, and some dabbles in WoW Classic/WoW Private stuff and some Grim Dawn here and there. I'm on a budget because I'm being responsible and we're in the midst of a $50k home remodel that we're not taking a loan out for along with having those money-sucking kids, but want to be somewhat future proof.

I slapped together this today:

Overall, running about $2200 on newegg...I'd like to get that down. Recommendations? Am I just really fucking overkill for what I want to play?

and here's my slightly cheaper version: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Caedrus/saved/jzK3Hx
Spending $400 on a mobo is a huge waste of money unless it has some feature you absolutely need. You shouldn't need to spend more than $150-$175 to get a good mobo from an established brand.

Also, 64 gigs of memory is a complete waste. You don't need more than 32.

You can also nearly cut the cost of your PSU in half by getting an 800 or 850. You don't need more than that.

You could also easily save $50 on your SSD. Your choice is unnecessarily expensive.

The second build is listed as private, but your first build is wasting $500-$600.

*Edit* I replied as soon as I saw your post and didn't read the follow-up posts. It looks like some of my concerns were already addressed.

My next version. Should be public. You're right though. I don't need a cadillac. BG3 and PoE2. I appreciate the feedback. Been so long since I built that SSDs were SATA only I think....or typically were.

Glad to get a new machine for the first time since 2016. And for point of reference, my current case has been in use since 2008. I built into it for WOTLK. Since then I've just been swapping out components.
Seeing the builds you've put together really hammers home the insane value I got from my $2k 7900 XTX build, yesterday.

Yeah I started chopping at it even before I got the replies because it felt ridiculous. The 64 bit is because I am trying to do some side stuff with some engineering simulations I'm starting to monkey with.

Like a lot of other people I have been seriously considering buying a 50 series card, but yesterday I pulled the trigger on building a system with a 7900XTX and a 7800x3D.

I built it for two reasons:

1. I think the pricing and availability of the 50 series is going to be shit for 6+ months. After that, the pricing is still going to be retarded as I expect you won't be able to buy a 5080 for less than $1200, ever.

2. I was able to put together the entire pc (completely new build) for $1950 ($2082 shipped) and I didn't skimp on anything. Normally, I skimp a bit on the case because I don't give a shit about aesthetics, but I do care about thermals so I bought a great Fractal case.

My current PC is ok, but not great (RTX 3080 10gb and 10600k) and I play at 1440p so the new system will meet every need I will have for years and there's no reason to wait for the opportunity to spend more money for performance I don't need. My goal is 150fps at high settings in nearly every game and the new setup comes very close.

Maybe in the future I'll care about Raytracing and DLSS, but for now I simply don't.
Your new build is my current build, except I have an NZXT case. I have 2 4K screens hooked up to it and love it so much. I got tired of the Nvidia 'x magic software trick that requires our new $$$$$ hardware you must have oh ignore those burning PSU's because we decided to make an new power connector because fuck you that's why coming soon now you must have' and decided the shiny water trick wasn't worth the hassle. And you get shit FPS at 4k with that shit on anyhow.

Don't pay $129 for fucking Windows, there are places to get a Win 11 pro license for $15 or cheaper. DM me if you don't know where to look.

I went from 32GB to 64GB due to messing with astrophotography and stacking the images myself off my seestar S50. But yeah for the most part it is a waste in gaming.

LOL. No, I'm not paying 129. You can get any license you want from Groupon among other places.

Ended up getting the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless (Black Myth Wukong edition).

People seems fairly happy with it and I found it for $30 on a Black Friday sale.

Cant be worse than the the Elite Shit 2 that costed me $180 and does not even work.

I have 64gb. Because some companies I deal with sent gigantic drawings and never turn off or purge umpteen layers and I get an entire chemical plant from structural, process, parking and everything in between on the drawings. They think hey it's FTP it's no big deal, well it's not on their end.

Oh don’t get me started. Current model I was sent has 4 layers of changes on one pipe system rather than dumping the old stuff. Combined with messing with Aspen and now dipping into CFD/FEA and other numerical approaches, my RAM on gets taxed.

Current gen Intel is at best a sidegrade to the previous gen when it comes to gaming, but more expensive. The last gen had unreported manufacturing problems (via oxidation) and microcode issues that caused it to pull too much power that could physically damage the CPU. The via oxidation issue happened last year at one fab and was supposedly fixed, Intel just didn't admit that they were shipping some potentially defective CPUs until they were forced to this year. The power draw issue has supposedly been fixed in microcode, but if you buy a used CPU it's a crapshoot as to whether it was damaged before it was updated. I haven't seen if the microcode updates affected performance though.

General rule of thumb right now is if you game, buy AMD x3D and call it a day. If you don't it's more nuanced, but the new Intel 200 series is a rushed, one off architecture and generally poor performance to dollar value.

As usual, Tech Jesus has guidance:

All in all, buying into Intel is regrettable any way you slice it because they're just not worth the trouble, and the company itself has been doing everything in its power to erode all trust in the brand. Even this "new" sorry excuse of a generation will most likely get dumped as soon as possible.
Whats considered the most reliable and bang for the buck controller for PC?

Using my dual sense atm but I think I want a Xbox layout instead.

I have an Elite Controller 2 which is the worst piece of shit I ever bought. The Y and A buttons work like 75% of the time. I took it apart to try fix it but ended up throwing it in a random box in pieces to never see the light of day again.
I honestly like the Razer Wolverine Ultimate.

It's only $70, has back triggers instead of paddles that don't get in the way, but the stand out feature to me is that it also has an extra left and right bumper that can be remapped.

The only downside is that it uses an Xbox store app and I don't think you can create things like custom macros, but otherwise it works great to just move controls around to things like those bumpers or the bottom triggers. If you want true customization, the third party controller software REWASD is the best I've found and can even remap otherwise hard-locked controls that Steam can't undo like in Monster Hunter World.

Im just not going to build another PC again, what companies should I be looking at for a prebuilt? Also is Intel okay to use now? I am getting mixed messages about the current and last gen processors blowing up?
I have a MicroCenter 2 blocks away from me. I have gotten their house brand pcs when I need a new one for the past few years. No ragerts so far.

OK I thought I saw everything when those 'rent rims' places opened (when spinners were popular) but renting a PC?! What about, you know, working for the money?
Those rent to own places generate mad cash. They sell low end PC's with a huge markup and high interest. Not no $15k, but $2k to own a $499 PC is nuts.

I think I've settled on a build with a motherboard that should future-proof me. I changed a few things around with some of the recommendations I've seen given to others. My only hurdle now is to figure out the GPU. I was going to go with a 4070 super but I might just go with the 4080 super or AMD equivalent now. Also, for $50 more I figured 1000w would hurt vs the 850w. I'm buying most of these parts now since they are on sale. I'll buy the CPU when it's back in stock at microcenter. Let me know your thoughts.

Edit: Thanks for the heads-up about the Windows keys. I didn't know about that.

have you given thought to using the front for the aio and getting a 360 instead of a 240 to mount on the top, the case has room for 300mm card WITH front aio

most 4070supers are less than 300 and some 4080s are as well

A buddy of mine at work mentioned that but he also wasn't well versed in how it would work out. This is my first time using water cooling. I watched tech Jesus in the video below. I concluded it would probably be best if I stick to the basics.

it's just that the cost diff between a 240 vs a 360 is nill but the performance for oc is on the 360 side, and since youre gettting a 9800x3d where they'd reworked the chiplets to allow overclocking again, it would just be more room to grow
