Its not the levels that is hard, its getting all that light afterwards. Leveling in this game was never hard.
It was before 2.0. Basing a leveling system off light items and then making that RNG so it took forever, sucked. I am glad it's changed I may actually play it now. I had fun last night in the new leveling system.

The old exotics are still pretty good, worth using until you get something that is better. Getting to lvl40 is really easy, getting to 240+ Light will/can take a bit (though I imagine is a lot quicker via PvP than PvE). Finished the main Story line and it was pretty fun, the last fight was different.

Still trying to figure out how to do the quest you get from Petra, since you get access to new bounties after finishing it. Got Thorn from Cryptard early on during the Veteren Tour quest, thought that was funny...maybe its a guaranteed exotic for each character, haven't tried it yet.

Old system: Your level was 20 and your gearscore was 1-14 displayed for all to see. Butthurt ensues.

New system: You are level 40 with a gearscore of ???? (shown on inspect?)

Other than the number displayed prominently next to your name now meaning nothing the system is exactly the same. Your damage is still massively gimped if you are stuck trying to get that last item to drop.

Its the same shit now, bro. You can be 40 all day long but without all that light and RNG youre still a noob ass.

Well, the path is more clear. Play the game and level up regardless, light gear isn't so much RNG any longer but more static drops so you continually get something, to my understanding. So play a strike, and automatically get something decent to level up with and progress - rather than absolutely nothing as before and have to run it again. My understanding of how it works now anyhow.

Yes, I heard they are actively trying to remove the grind from this game. Last expansion was a good start. Plus I like the quests now. Seems from the streams I have watched, there is a ton of them to do with rewards, more engrams...etc.

I understand that they added 40 to make "leveling" not gear dependent. My point was, if it's so easy and fast to hit 40, and you are right back to needing a higher light level to unlock activities (that is 100 percent gear dependent), why bother with levels at all?unless you are going to make them something you need to actually put effort to work towards. Turning in a few bounties to max out your level because the xp requirement is so low is dumb. Maybe it's my mmo days influencing my opinion, but I'd rather need to shoot bad guys/do missions and bounties for a few weeks to work hard (er) to earn 40 than do a mission and a handful of bounties to be right back in the "xp is pretty pointless since I'm maxed out in level and subclass " after the first day.

It is rather dumb, they just separated the levels from light to make shit a bit easier to understand. But, yeah most of the streams I watched today basically leveled up to 40 within the first 15 min after opening up their new sub class. Just from the saved up bounties and 1-2 quests. So yeah, it seems like the extra 6 levels are essentially pointless. Maybe they just did it to have everyone at an even 40 rather than 34? Who the fuck knows.

Another fucked up thing they are doing is releasing the raid so fucking early, which basically forces people to min-max their way to the appropriate light level for the raid, rather than releasing it in maybe a few weeks, and have everyone enjoy their journey and take their time to get to raid levels.

This is all I heard on the streams... "Got to grind the light gear out so I can RAIIIID!"

One caveat for everyone to observe: There are only 4 or 5 ways to grind legendary marks. Nightfall x3, Weekly Heroic x3, the two daily missions (PVE and PVP), dismantling legendary year 2 gear, or presumably the raid. Grinding strikes and PVP do NOT NOT NOT give legendary marks, just rep. So if you miss out on a daily PVE story or PVP daily you will lose 15+25 marks, per day.

Hitting level 40 is trivial, but getting light 220+ (240 pref) for doing the daily PVE and more is a bit more difficult. In 3-4 weeks it won't be a big deal at all, but right now if you wanna min/max daily you want to get to 40 ASAP, bang out some of the story missions so at least each character is 220 light, and then knock out those daily PVP and PVE quests. Gunsmith isn't a big deal, there is no way to hit rank 2 by tomorrow so you may as well do it over the week.

That sucks for the weekend warriors. Fuck, they want you to play this shit daily to get those marks, at least for the min-maxers? How bout the care packages once you level a rep, are they dropping from those?

They based the new static loot drops off an itemization database pool which reflects off your current level. From what I have read as I dig further into various articles. I honestly think it is there more for a systems match bandaid more than anything. Which would explain why it goes up fairly quickly. I am also guessing they didn't have the foresight to block people from saving bounty turn ins and auto progressing to 40 immediately without going through the content.

Anyway, so when you are 35, you will receive loot from strikes, etc that will match around a level 35 range. When you are 40, you will start to receive higher end tiered light items based on the difficulty of the strike/raid and level set to 40 from a different itemization pool. IE: It now selects from the level 40 database over the 35. It may have been a work around for a poorly designed system to begin with in conjunction with randomly generated chances at loot which usually never came to fruition, or did way too much. It was a way to normalize it I am guessing with 2.0. Or, I would guess when you are going through a strike on Normal difficulty, it carried with it too broad a range (Pull random loot from the level 22-26 table if you are lucky enough) which ended up in people getting lower level loot for their character and not the correct light progression to advance passed 26 and 30. (This happened to me quite a bit and was frustrating to no end)

We will have to see how it all plays out. From a gameplay/questing stand point I think it also has an effect of having people see a number go up as they move through the story/patrols/quests/strikes.

Do I need to save any of my old exotics? I was set to lv30 because obv I never ascended any of my gear. Is everything old just shard bait once you replace with higher level drops now? If any are upgradable to year 2 stuff, I'd assume that would make them level 40 req.

Are my old ascendant materials used for anything, or did they obsolete those?
I had the same question yesterday, props to Fourth for helping answer this for me.

You can safely disenchant any of the exotics that you own, and buy them back later if you wish. In the tower, down by the three class trainers (down the staircase in the middle area) there are two blue kiosks, one for exotic weapons, the other for armor. You can repurchase any exotics you have previously found. This can clear up a lot of your armory space for you.

Also, there is that one chick that sells emblems, down the hallway towards the speaker. She has two kiosks next to her, one for emblems, the other for shaders. Here you can rebuy any of the emblems and shaders you have previously discovered, so you can safely destroy the ones you have to clear space.

It's also nice because you can see which ones you are missing, although I'm not sure how complete the list is.

As far as the ascendant materials go, the speaker allows you to trade them in for glimmer. I'm not sure if there is any other conversion.

BTW daily pvp and story are account wide now, so you only have to run each once per day, no need to run it on each character - won't get you anything extra. Thats 40 legendary marks/day if you do it every day, plus whatever you get for nightfall and weekly heroic. Its good imo, it would be kinda insane to expect people to run each 3x for 120 marks a day, taking up 2 hours.

The story mode will take about 6-8 hours the first time you run it through and probably 4 hours or less for the second and third times. A lot of grind-y type stuff opens up afterwards, like there are 50 ghost shards on the dreadnaught you have to find to build an exotic weapon, or a bunch of long chain quests involving patrols, story missions, old raids, etc.

My titan ended up finishing the story at light 224, thats with a lucky drop from two faction packages (weapons) and shoulders. I guess if I get 40 marks today, tomorrow, and wed I can buy a piece of armor and maybe something from xur on friday and hit... around 260? Not sure how someone is going to get to 280 light without a lot more grinding and/or getting super lucky with faction packages or engrams.

you only earn 15 for the daily pvp and 25 for the daily story, you earn zero for regular pvp/strike queuing

Got to light 268, tired though going to bed. Nightfall is doable, got about half way but was passing out and went to orbit.

Protip: the higher light level you are the better gear your engrams turn into, Ive seen up to 285 light out of a purple engram now, 275 out of a blue. So level up using story s much as possible, dont spend tons of motes etc on faction leveling cuz all those early purples you get you replace in no time.

Ok so only one thing I am pissed about with this expansion.

WHY IN THE EVER LIVING FUCK WASN'T THE ORIGINAL LAUNCH LIKE THIS.

Jesus. This is the way it should have been all ALONG. And probably was before the "edits". Whoever was responsible for that "edit", fuck you right in the asshole.

Whoever set the ship right with this expansion, or released this in the intended way the launch was supposed to be, you deserve a medal.

100% agree - games actually pretty stinking good now. New Titan subclass is fun as fuck, rift pvp fun as fuck (even if I'm shit at it)! Made ll 221 or so and have maybe 60 marks... Gonna grind out 280 suros before anything else. Really enjoyable xpac, never thought I'd come back to this game but here I am
