all the participants have signed their contracts, Dune Part 2 will release to theaters only Oct 2023. Legendary Pictures is paying for 80% of the budget, with WB covering 20% and presumably marketing. Legendary is Chinese owned so the movie will open in China.

good enough in 2021.

precisely

Unlike Prometheus, I would say its worth a watch, its just not nearly as good as it could have been

And I watched the Sci Fi series long before I read the books, so it's not just the "book is better than the movie" type deal

I was sold on the movie going "experience", but Dune was the first "big" movie I saw in 4K on my giant ass TV. I don't know if I can ever go back.
Same. When I can just wander down to the basement and watch it with beer and snacks...much better experience.

In regards to the movie leaving stuff out, I’m fine with it. I’m not a hardcore book/movie purist. If anything it made me want to read the books to fill in gaps. Sure I’d love if it had another hour or two tacked on to fit more in but as long as it’s good and entertaining I don’t mind some tweaking or leaving things out. LotR comes to mind, some pretty terrible changes from the books. Gimli & hobbits for comic relief, legolas skateboarding on shields, Faramirs character change, etc. they’re still really entertaining.

Yeah, LotR is a great example of movies that changed quite a bit of the "source", omitted stuff, etc. and yet were still highly entertaining.

I feel the same way about Dune. The movie not being rated R and how they handled Dr. Yeuh's stuff are my only major complaints. The rest is just nitpicky shit that I know is difficult to include without putting the runtime at 3 and 1/2 hours+. While I'm certain nerds like us would sit through it, these things still have to make money at the end of the day and getting the "masses" to watch for that long is a tall order. Especially in an ADHD ridden populace - to say nothing of the budget a runtime like that would require.

Yeah, I didn’t want it to end. At least the second got the green light, that would have really sucked to stop where it did forever.

As someone who hasnt seen it yet, it sounds like they dumbed it down based off the responses. This movie is 2 1/2 hours and just part 1 yet theyve left out notable characters?

But at the same time its said to not be "bad" and visually stunning so thats good enough in 2021.
I didn't think it was "not bad", I'd definitely say it's good. I like the comparisons to LotR in terms of cut content. Would I like to see an extended cut with everything else thrown in? Of course, but I still really enjoyed it.

One complete nerd nitpick I have is the Harkonnen ship firing a lasgun at Duncan's shielded ornithopter during the attack on Arrakeen. I don't believe it's mentioned in the film, but lasguns aren't typically used in warfare due to the nuclear explosion resulting from laser to shield contact. The fremen using lasguns on the Harkonnen spice harvesters at the beginning makes sense due to not using shields anywhere worms could be near. The Harkonnen ship firing a few hundred yards away from Duncan's ship? Not so much. Or the Sardaukar using the lasgun in the ecological testing site - unless it was supposed to be a suicide mission, why risk it there either?

I guarantee this one paragraph here is more thought than anyone involved with the project gave it.

It’s more exciting to see lasers firing than it is to see them not firing. Like Gavinmad Gavinmad said, they didn’t think about it.

Does it look cool? Put it in the movie! Only the fucking omega nerds are going to care. Those are details you can worry about when you have 900 pages to fill. In a movie? Blow some shit up.

Beer & homemade nachos is the main reason theater viewing sucks. Maybe those places would have seen more loyalty just for the sake of the experience if we weren't so conditioned to $9 sodas and $16 popcorn being part of the experience.

I thought the navigators evolved with spice.

As in it was a multigenerational thing to get to the giant floating teleporting worm, not just a single lifespan

Edit:. Answered a dozen pages ago. Lol

I'm really surprised they're doing a second movie, I was so sure this was going to be a backdoor pilot into the next big HBO series.

There's no way they're getting Zendayya (or whatever the hell you spell her name as) to do a series. If it were a bunch of B list actors then the series part would have been more feasible.
