Yeah your interpretation is reasonable and makes a lot more sense than the son's books on the subject, where the big enemy was literally thinking robots (with some cyborg battles along the way). I think it's logical to assume that the Jihad was against these slavers, destroying their machines, and the subsequent creation and enforcement of a prohibition against thinking machines, so that future similar enslavement wouldn't happen.
Personally, when I read that quote now in 2024 I can't help but think that the social media, digital entertainment, grubhub lifestyle is an early version of what he was describing...
