well, LoL the MMO isn't something i'd be willing to play. so i guess the only game i'll continue to play is etchazz: the forum lurker, which is fine; that game is more fun than anything that's currently out (or any that are going to come out). i guess all the private messages that i've been getting telling me to be patient and wait for the reveal were all for naught. it's pretty much exactly what i thought it was going to be: guild rift wars ultima online tera warcraft next....
They need to make eq3 using same engine and assets.

i think what it all really boils down to is when brad and co. made everquest they basically made a game that they thought would be fun to play themselves. they weren't worried about making a billion dollars or having ten million subscribers. they just had an idea in their head of what would make a fun game and went with it. nowadays, it's not "let's make a game that we'd like to play, or that we think would be fun" it's "let's make a game that is very similar to all the popular games that are already out and see if we can leech some of their players and try to be just as successful." the biggest difference here is when EQ was around, it was more like "fuck you, this is our game, if you don't like it, don't play it." now the mantra is "we need everyone to like us no matter what and will let everyone do everything and change everything so that everyone is happy." sorry, but that doesn't work. trying to please everyone leads to pleasing no one. point is, most gamers are so dumb they don't even know what they want until you give it to them. people think they don't want a game to be difficult, until they're playing a difficult game and say to themselves "holy shit, this is fun!"

Let's start them out on opposite edges of the continent with roughly equal but not really mirrored zones and resources on each half and let Darwin sort things out.
ya and a mid top n bottom path with wizard spires to act as towers lol

I think a big part of the story line is gonna be building the cities. Having one starter city doesnt mean pvp won't be good any way. EVE could start everyone in the same starter zone and it would have no real effect on the games pvp. Faction based pvp games don't have a good track record, despite daocs few years of moderate success. The game doesnt even sound like it would lend itself to faction based pvp. Which is good because guild based pvp is far better if they let you have real territory control. Every person I ever met cares far more about the success of their player made alliances than they do about the team that the game picked for them.

The reason has more to do with the current state of the market. I know most posters on this forum are Mr. Moneybags who can afford to hire private dancers to grind levels for them and whatnot but for the average Joe out there money is tight. People pushing for subs like to do that stupid "lol a movie lasts 2 hours and costs 60 surely you can spend 15 on an MMO!" comparison but the more apt comparison is right now I have like 57 fucking games on my phone and I haven't paid a fucking dime. Of the 2~3 hours a day I have to spend on games probably 30 of it is spent just on coming up with words for this fucking hangman game my entire family plays. Dynasty Warriors 8 just came out recently and is fucking fantastic so I'm playing that for an hour or so. My Wife and I are pushing to finally finish Diablo 3 after spending a year without computers and internet. I never actually finished Skyrim and have just reinstalled that as well.

Which leaves me with pretty much zero time for an MMO and even if I had some extra time here and there to play do you think I'm going to commit to 15 bucks a month? It makes no economical sense.

And not to re-ignite the sub vs. f2p argument again but you do realize that subscription fees do not quality content make. Subscription feesONLYmake sense if you have a large customer support division like Blizzard used to have before they shitcanned most of them. If you have 2 people and a monkey like Trion or SoE does then paying a sub fee is a fucking joke. It costs an insignificant drop in the bucket to keep servers online. Just selling ad space on your login screen is enough to offset the cost of the servers it's that fucking cheap. That money is not going towards development or being poured back into the game.

It goes into some corporate officers pocket and then they go to Europe and load up on hookers (not that Kaplan or Metzen have ever done that...cough cough).

So yeah.
You're probably right...but at least with subs there is potential they will reinvest a fraction of it into the actual game. The only motivation to investing in a cash shop game is to make the cash shop more of a money sucker. I haven't always been Mr. Moneybags, unlike many here I'm still in my mid-20s. I paid $15 a month as a broke high school student, then as an even broker college student. However, I haven't paid for a single MMO since I've actually had money because none of them are worth my time much less my cash. I had GW2 preordered but was able to cancel after realizing it didn't have the foundation to last during the beta.

Blizzard already has the appeal to everyone market and is still chugging along with subs despite the writing on the wall. At some point a designer is going to have to convince the suits they have to market to a subset of gamers. People pay for WoW because it's worth it. They don't pay for Rift because it's not. I'm not asking for EQ1 here (hell, I never played it. Although I think FFXI got the idea across pretty well). All I want is a solidly built game with non-boring combat that I can log into most days and actually give a fuck who I am playing with. I know damn well my subset isn't the majority which is fine, there will be many more attempts to make glorified lobby games for the people who only want to play in 30 minute sessions. I don't know why those people still play MMOs now that the Dota genre has taken off but regardless.

There are ways to make this work in today's fickle market. I'm with everyone else; tired of grinding levels in every new MMO when I can tell by the time I'm 3/4 of the way to cap it won't last. You can take the EQN path and remove levels (but it has to be done right and we know it won't be). You can offer a free trial (and I don't mean after everyone has quit, put it in after the first month or even at release) to the first major "holy shit" moment in the game. That's all Open Beta is anyway, right? Now you've taken care of everyone who won't give it a shot due to the barrier of entry. I have the same problem completing 40 hour games and because of that I don't often pay $50 anymore. The last two games I bought at release were Mass Effect 3 and Football Manager 13, and I got 13 for $30. Do you think Iwantto drop $50 then $15 a month? Nope, but I don't want to pay for a $500 hooker either. Doesn't mean the better option is a $5 hooker.

All I know is that I'm gonna be getting an awesome shovel and doing some major Kerran hole griefing in PvP. No that wasn't sexual.
If you see a hole in the earth that drops down to the bottom level with a bunch of Kerran corpses at the bottom, say hi to me.

So is CCP a charity ? They get government grants from Iceland to
operate because they are losing money monthly ?
Or are they the only competent company that knows a well made
, more hardcore sub based game can and does succeed , long term , and continues to?

I just don't get why someone can't make that game for a fantasy audience. And half ass attempts like
Mortal Online and Darkfall don't count as I'm talking about an actual
decent attempt by a real company.

If that was more than bullet points expanded out to 1 page of fluff it might be worth something. Unfortunately it is only a few actual points from the grass is greener side and doesn't even touch on the overall gameplay. But that's the problem, there isn't overall gameplay yet, and they haven't even talked about overall gameplay yet.

People who are wearing rose-colored glasses this early are hard to take seriously. Hard facts that we know are bad outweigh ruby slippers and wonder wishing.

Oh I agree. I'm pretty pessimistic. Taking a step back to look at a more positive, overall look at what was presented helped calm my jimmies, if just a little.

Can someone link me to a complete write up of everything so I don't have to browse this entire thread?
