I would be ok with it if the only healing is VG style disciples and bloodmages with the EQ like paladins and SKs who can heal a bit too.

I would prefer real healers but if all we get is dps healers then atleast it won't be as stupid as VG was.

Healing is a defensive ability, some classes do not have defensive abilities (e.g. Rogue). So there has to be some kind of healer/support.
Did you sit through the Creating a World panel and see the Freeport screenshots I referenced? Just curious if it looked like shit or was it actually decent quality. I wish they would've showed off at least one damn in-game city to give me some level of confidence that this game is going to launch prior to 2015.

Yeah this game isn't going to be out for another year at the earliest.
I really would like to know how much of it is playable and how much is on a napkin.

My guess...they have one giant fucking napkin.

I'm telling you guys this is LOLMMORPG+Mcraft. There are support classes in LOL.

Effective combat is going to look like LOL. Professoinal players play very specific combinations of characters: AD/Carry/AP/ whatever I forget haven't played in months.

A group that knows what it is doing is going to do something similiar:

You're going to have 2 tankish types, 2 dps types (melee or magic) and a support guy. A few of the tanks may have a defensive slot (say Paladin) but the tanks are going to be slotted with mostly offensive abilities, and the movement abilities to grab the mob when it runs after the light armor guys. Very few defensive abilities (healing) with the Pally an exception. They'll be using Heavy Armor/Heavy Weapons (e.g. Sword & Shield) that's going to mitigate damage. Basically a tank w/o taunt abilities.

The dps types are going to be slotted with offensive/utility stuff and the odd defensive/movement ability. They'll have leather and light armor or cloth (some mage types) which will add to dps/energy/wtf. Basically, DPS or CC types

The support is going to have 2 defensive slots, and then 2 of (utility/movement/offensive). They'll have a mix of armor that adds to energy or defensive skills generally. Healers & Buffers.

So basically if the game is setup right, players are going to impose trinity conditions on themselves to form effective groups.

Multi-classing is going to be used to slot specific shit for mobs/other players - e.g. magebane example if you're going up against a guild that's heavy on mage types.

----------------

All that said, it's a lot easier doing the above if you just have defined classes.

It will just end up really crappy if the fights consist of this.

- step 1 everyone attack enemy/enemies
- step 2 whoever reaches 1/3 health first disengages the combat
- step 3 disengaged player runs around dodging while waiting for autoheal or whatever they have for in combat healing
- step 4 player re-enters battle at full health
- step 5 repeat as players hit 1/3 health.
odd i was thinking the same way.
i expect to see alot of pvp/fps tatics: turtling/kamakazi/distractions/standoffs/etc ...
and then designed abilities to prevent kiting/keepinggroup in an area (dmg on move), temp summoned voxel to block other groups from joining or you from escaping.. (aka temp instance)
..but then again, i feel this is kinda a tacky move if done generically or if over used and not specfic to a type of mob/class (like adding runes shields to alot mobs in vanguard)

i can see the benefit in not req the the 4 crossclass skills to be preloaded... but once used, it's locked while in combat.

etc....
I can live with that. Sounds like a loose version of the trinity. Could be fun for groups. Not sure what that means for raids though.

They didn't really talk about them but I loved EQ's huge army raids. Tired of the 10 / 20 man idiocy hyper tuned for boredom.

If they are smart they won't over tune raids, make a really hard mob and let the players have at it. Overtuned raids that are tightly scripted and tightly dps checked are another thing that needs to go away in MMOs. EQ1s best raids were shit they just added and let players fight.

Awesome, so now our 8 skill bar is already down to 6 or 7
No. You have 4 weapon skills, 4 character ability skills.
The character abilities are specific slots depending on the class.

IIRC, Rogue has 2 offense, 1 utility, 1 movement. That means when multiclassing you can only slot 2 offense, 1 utility, 1 movement skill from your owned classes but no defense skill.

Blademaster is 3 offense and 1 movement (again IIRC) so he can only slot 3 offense and 1 movement skill from his owned classes. No utility, no defense.

Got it?

When Ultima Online launched way back in 1997 it had a NPC AI system in place. To quote fromhttp://www.gamasutra.com/view/featur..._.php?print=1:

Unfortunately they turned off all these AI systems within 2 weeks of launch, because people were spawn camping stuff and never letting a chance for emergent AI to... emerge. Obviously I'm sure stuff has progressed since then but I do wonder if you can really plan around all the really, really, really dumb things people are going to do. The classic "omg you fucking noob let the orc wander into town to start the group quest, stop killing him!" area chat.
Well, you simply dynamically load content into areas where people aren't playing. I also don't see why you can't necessarily speed up dynamic events either. No one's been at this village for a few days? MASS ORC ATTACK. The game doesn't necessarily have to wait for Orcs from the other side of the world to randomly run into the village first.

Okay so this is how I see things in my head with a system like this that would be fun.

Tier 1 everyone starts out with one of each ability type in their class bar. Defense, movement, damage and utility. In a 25 man raid that means 25 Defense,25 movement, 25 damage and 25 utility.

Tier one raids require exactly 25 of each ability however they all work.

I gave an example earlier or a needing to carry a crystal around to keep it off the floor, if it touches the floor the raid wipes. So someone needs to hold it. While holding it you need to use a defense cool down to keep alive. The cool down needs to be used once a minute for 10 minutes. With 4 ability slots available to any one person you could spread the cool downs around accordingly based on the class distributed list of ability's.

A sample tanking class would look like this through the tiers. With 40 classes you can see the chance for unique guild builds to finish raids etc.

A system like this would not require a trinity but would allow for it if your group of friends choose to use it.

pathfinderonline blogs about going this route (weapon slots).
i imagine that the eqn tba other slots will be akin to what pfo is doing: passive slots, consumable slots, (oocombat/utility slots)
..just food for thought.

so yeah not reading the last 120 pages, anyone care to summarize? or can we just get a summary thread with shit that is actually known from people that were at SOE live/saw the panels/asked direct questions not covered in panels?

Nah I slept through that one. Too much to drink the night before and was dragging.

The current release window for EQN is October 2014 to June 2015 with a margin of error of +/- 3 months.

I will speculate that the window depends a lot on how EQN/L does and that SOE is likely to have an open beta for a while where you can keep your class so for all intents and purposes you're playing the game and that the PS4 version will be revealed at E3 2014.

Supposedly there's no real scripting at all for mobs; they'll use storybricks to let the mobs assess threats and opportunities, and let that determine how the mob will fight. They can also evidently raise and lower how smart the mob can be, so raid mobs will quickly note how players are fighting and adjust their behavior accordingly, while a regular wolf may just stupidly charge whoever's closest.
