What defines "Everquest"?
To me EQ is a massively multiplayer online role playing game that is set on the planet of Norrath. It features races such as Humans, Elves, Gnomes, Trolls, Ogres and Iksar. There is a history in which the Ring of Scale, Shissar, Combine Empire, Venril Sathir, etc. play major roles and where Gods and different Planes are a major influence.
Nothing in my worldview discredits a game with destructible environments, multiclassing, or Rally Calls from being "Everquest". Indeed when I played EQ I was very keen on the ways in which the world was effected by long term change. There were hints with things like Paineel emerging and the Hole being discovered or the opening up of Kunark and Velious...but these were all just expansions and the rest of the world stayed depressingly static and made it seem less real. To that extent I would think the promise of Real Change and constant evolution would make a game MORE like Everquest than not.
Now of course a great many things depend on the actual implementation of their ideas, but even I can see many ways in which the skeleton they have outlined can become a VERY revolutionary title and reinvigorate the whole MMORPG genre. Certainly what they have sketched sounds more like a place to go and want to be rather than a game I boot up just so I can sit in town waiting for the evening's raid.
As was pointed out somewhere else, SOE is pulling a Blizzard.I'd love to be in a Titan development meeting now. Say whatever you want about EQN, it did through down a bit of a creative gauntlet. Blizzard and SoE are still the heavyweights in the genre. Could be an interesting few years that might just redefine things a bit.
Well..we know it won't be a true EQ sequel. That's obvious but that doesn't mean it won't be an awesome game.Bravo!
People here are so blinded by their desire for their idea of Everquest, that they can't imagine another EQ that is different. So, without any real info to go on, they're declaring things left and right while all of us truly have no clue what EQN will end up like on release. I just shrug my shoulder and move on and laugh mostly at people with their "salty tears" all over this forum. Have a good one guys!
I've already posted my guess previously: Oct 2014 to June 2015 +/- 3 months. So basically a window of a year. If you think I'm pulling that out of my ass, that's fine with me.@Tad
The issue is Blizzard is typically the king of that.
We'll see. You seem to have a higher degree of faith and trust or fandom of SoE.
Also "No comment?" You can take off the blinders and make your own conclusion beyond what a dev may have whispered to you.
Because MOBAs and Minecraft are so not what the kids play these days?out of touch ideas.
Bro, I couldnt disagree with you more. I'm not sure how you came to conclude that this was the "same ol' SoE with... the same out of touch ideas". That's nonsense. This game is a risk for SoE because of the challenge of bringing these creative decisions together. Maybe this game crashes and burns due to poor execution but let's wait for that to happen before we crucify new ideas in a stale genre. What pisses me off about the reveal was they built it up too be a.....reveal. But what did they even reveal..All it does it shows that this is the same old SOE with the same shit values and out of touch ideas. Nothing has changed. This is a money grab plain and simple. Hence the title Everquest.
Beyond that, if they're really serious about engaging with the playerbase and listening to people's responses when developing the game, it does make some sense to release info in a way that it directs people's conversations. If they want people's opinions on death penalties, then it makes sense to release info on their current plans for death penalties, and nothing else; that way, they get everyone talking about that one thing, and thus make it easier for the devs to gauge player opinion, and farm ideas from what people are saying. So, they start off giving us the broad strokes of what they want to do differently, both to see our response to it, and to give us a framework around which to think about more detailed info, when they start releasing it, and go from there. They specifically said they wanted to save some reveals for Gamescon, PAX, etc.
Marketing wants a constant news stream, I'm sure.
I don't like Smedley but I think Butler's just the type of asshole who can get this shit done. I really wish they hadn't round filed EQ3, Butler would have whipped his team mercilessly until it was great. See my comment to Ut 20 pages back.fandom of SoE.
It does two things:May be a dumb question but does unlocking classes impact the character or account you think? I'm assuming you still have restrictions based on your base class? i.e unlocking a Wizard does nothing if you are a base class of Warrior.
Why do people believe SoE now? I'msocurious about this. Guys, this was the company that brought the figure of speech "pissing on your back and calling it rain" to the MMO audience. I mean, seriously. What do you guys think is more likely...They don't have shit beyond what they showed.Orthat they secretly have a lot more done and held back exciting mechanics (Like mobs that move) because of a brilliant marketing campaign? They specifically said they wanted to save some reveals for Gamescon, PAX, etc.
Marketing wants a constant news stream, I'm sure.
Yes, they've done more. I don't know about a lot more. Crafting is almost completely done because it's going into EQN/L. I'm sure they're still working on the combat AI because they just hired the StoryBricks guys late last year (Oct/Dec? Not sure). So whatever the hell AI they were working on prior to SB got tossed. That's why we didn't see combat AI in the demo.that they secretly have a lot more done and held back exciting mechanics (Like mobs that move) because of a brilliant marketing campaign.
