Oh, the game will crash all on it's own but mods will take it to a whole other level. In my first playthrough it eventually became corrupted enough that I couldn't go anywhere close to the CIT ruins, we're talking like 1/4 of the map close, or it would crash. A bit hard to play when that much of the map is off limits.

Also fuck survival and that save limitation. When I decided to try survival on this latest playthrough one of the first mods I added wasCampsite - Simple Wasteland Camping (and HD Sleeping Bags)so I could craft sleeping bags and have access to saving anywhere.

Then after a few hours the no fast travel annoyed the fuck out of me so I turned survival off.

I don't run a single mod and my game goes boom a lot on a 970.

We need to be able to upload our cities. My Sanctuary is a citadel, completely encased in concrete and covered in turrets. Red Rocket is a statue of liberty like museum which can now be seen from Sanctuary, with the Rocket building encased inside with lights around it. The Drive In is like Kelethin. Each city has a flavor, except a few that are just forts. Fun stuff.
And when you get raided, I bet they still teleport right into the middle of the town and wreck everything unless you personally come babysit it.

I love the no fast travel lol.

Its brutal. I have three quests for Minutemen right now, all three are on opposite corners of the map. I have to truck it all the way to all of them. The whole point of this run is to deal with it all and never reduce the difficulty level.

I'm not going within a mile of that mod either on this run.

Only Spectecal Island. Can't seem to setup the internal defenses correctly there. Rest of my settlements get a check mark 10-20 minutes after they come under attack. Knock on wood because it's not a long stretch of time.

So this mod made me think of a mind blowing new direction for the fallout games. If you have the cryo chambers in vaults, why limit the game to a single time in the future. Imagine first coming out in vanilla. Going through the world, have a final story line that leads to you freezing again for another 10-20 years, and you come out in this mod. World has started to regrow, some of the people and villages from your first walk through are still there, just older. Some totally new people, some remember you. IF you built up a good sanctuary maybe it survived into the future with nothing but a statue to remember you as the founder, and some mythology that you would return one day. So much potential to play with time lines if they did something like that. Seeing the world evolve post apocalypse on a much larger scale of time.

I didnt play as much in the beginning, but i started a survival game and am enjoying it in much the same way. Things don't respawn as fast so you can sprint from, say, Hangman's Alley to Sanctuary in 3-4 minutes in relative safety. Cool thing is you usually pass something you didn't notice before from all the running around. I just got Fort Independence back and artillery is a lifesaver when you need to save but there's a dangerous raider camp with a bed in it.

Fast travel works well in these games when the game doesn't capriciously ask you to travel to all corners of the map without regard to travel costs.

I mean the first mission of the game is some ardorous journey from the first city to the starting homestead. It's a big deal to move those people and everyone acts like they just finished Pilgrim's Progress and threw the One Ring into Mordor when you move them 200 meters. Then every quest NPC says, "Hey do this very simple thing 10 miles from here."

The Oblivion mod, Nehrim, didn't have fast travel and was very disciplined about having quests that instructed you to go to far distances. Instead they had a much more moderate quest hub system. It was a lot of fun because any far off quests were big deals.

Had some time off so I binged on Fallout 4 this last week and did Automotron and Far Harbor. Automatron was a fun quest line that took me probably 5-6 hours. I haven't played with the robot crafting station much but it looks like a fun way to build custom companions. I wonder if they'll let you build synth companions in future expansions. I've spent a lot of time in Far Harbor, at least 15-20 hours doing quests and I still have some left. The main quest line was fun and it was great taking Nick along. And I still see lots of stuff on the map I need to explore.

Also I don't know when they added it but I love the ability to use concrete and make concrete structures. Way better than the metal and wood stuff from before.

Far Harbor was excellent. Bringing Nick Valentine is a must for some terrific dialogue.

I'm almost done with Automatron, which has been a huge pain in the ass on Survival.

I dunno. I think the robot building side of the dlc is good. The questline itself is pretty much a slog, imo.

Going to hit up Far Harbor next, hope its more enjoyable.

Yeah, I had to specialize for Automatron. I have a few pieces of armor that reduce dmg from robots iirc, and ffs a radiation gun of all things with 50% robot dmg. Between that, my electric sword, and my sniper rifle it wasn't too bad. But prior to that I had skipped it due to difficulty.

Well you may get butt hurt on surivival then because the radiation is hardcore there. Bring your XO suit.

Radiation isn't really that annoying even on survival tbh, but yeah I already know I gotta stock up quite a hefty excess of radx for that shit.

My problem with Automatron isn't even that the robots are difficult, they are, but I'm level 60 with maxed out pistol and rifle skills and I just snipe that shit from as far away as I can and then gtfo out of dodge until the rest of the bots chill.

Also, attacking limbs is usually one of the best ways to take care of the robots. Trying to go for heads and the power cores and combat inhibitors in Automatron doesn't work because they're armored over those points too much.

I didn't do all the special building of equipment and weapons to take them out, I'm sure that makes it much more palatable.

My problem is just the length of the dungeon with no save spots in it, and that's mostly related to the fact that the game is, like so many bethesda games, just an unstable piece of shit and I'm constantly fighting not just against the game world, but the save system and the instability of the game itself to progress.

It hasn't been enough to ruin my enjoyment though.

In general, I find this good advice for EVERYTHING on Survival. The Assaultron being the exception, 9 times out of 10 it starts charging that retarded eye cannon before I can send it crawling after me like the thing of nightmares that it is.

There is a mod that actually tells you all spawnpoints in a settlement so you can plan your defense, saw some guy put up a trap-riddled maze around one and it was hillarious. He went in and collected loot now and then from the corpses and picked up a lot of weapons from de-spawned mobs.

Oh dude, I got a lucky shot on an assaultron's eye right as he was about to fire that thing the other day and it blew him to pieces. I was like holy shit. It was a 1 in a million shot. I had run out of VATS shooting at it, and I accidentally jumped up in the air as VATS ended, and on my way back down I clicked the fire button and my bullet just perfectly slammed him right in the eye. I was dead a half second later were it not for that lucky hit.

I wish I'd gotten that on video, it was so awesome when it happened.

Yeah, and I saw another mod that moves all the spawn points to just outside the buildable perimeter so that they are forced to fight past the outer wall defenses.

The dumbest thing in the world was having spawn points INSIDE the fucking settlements. Pointless
