Yeah there’s a reason it never made it into any following games, it sucked ass. You’re even playing an improved version of it and it still sucks.
Without the boosts FF2 is terrible. With boosts you can get OP very quickly. I thought Emporer was a lame villain as well.

I don’t remember much about it, never made it very far. I wasn’t willing to put up with the shit design for the sake of just finishing it or experiencing its story. It had a character named Buttz though right? That was pretty cool I suppose.

Yeah go with the boosts. In other games they generally aren't necessary (maybe 2x for FF3) but I'd say in FF2 crank all the boosts to max and turn on HP compensation. Makes the game a lot more enjoyable cause you don't have to worry about stuff anymore and basically just level normally.

From there just keep a missable list close by so you don't have to do FF2 a second time. There are only a few missables, but some of them are very late (the Fynn/Paul stuff)

Speaking of which I have a PSA for FF3: This dungeon (Doga's Grotto) is a one-time only thing and happens VERY late in the game, right before the final dungeon. It's also after a few pain in the ass challenges.

Miss any enemies or chests here and you're fooked unless you have a recent backup save. So when you get to Doga's Grotto be warned. The six chests are easy to find and the five monsters are common, except Nemesis which took me a few minutes of walking back and forth to even see one of. So I could see that being the missing entry on a few people's bestiary at the end.

FF3 is like 2, only a few missable things but some of them are really late.

I still have a bunch of things to do like optional summon bosses and item collecting, but I'm gonna book it through the final area just far enough to get the Ninja/Sage jobs and do a 2 of each party like I did on the NES back when. They're basically the "ultimate classes" for FF3 that are supposed to obsolete others (while FF5 on the other hand balances classes out).

"Buttz" is from the FF5 fan translation, character is actually "Bartz". FF5 is one of the best designed games in the series.

Ah ok. Figures the cool name wasn’t from 2. Sounds like it has no redeeming qualities.

For sure so far in my playthrough (about 75% finished probably), there isn't really anything memorable, and plenty annoying about it. It feels very "B team."

The passwords are kinda cool I guess? For slightly interactive conversations.

FF2 has a really really good boss theme (that I think started with the PS1 version Origins). I like the SaGa elements of character leveling. It's the weakest of the lot but it isn't terrible, especially with the new boosts. It's good to play for completion's sake. FF2 is something you gotta just take as it is and not worry about much. Like when you get 4th characters and they have 1/5th the HP of your other 3, don't feel the need to go work on them if you don't feel like it. On this latest run I just let my fourth characters be dead most of the time until I got the last one because I got tired of trying to prop them up. That's what I mean about taking the game as it is and not fretting over it.

Another positive is that Maria is pretty hot for sprite. If they ever give the game a modern 3D remake, or bring her to another mainline game where she can be fully-rendered, she'll end up being the hottest character in the series. Unless by then they have her in a Sensible Pantsuit because "It's 2030"

Done with FF3 and 4 pretty much, maybe have another hour of each. 17 hours on FF3 and 15 on FF4 to get the plats. The first two barely broke 10 hours so they're stepping up. Final party in FF3 was Ninja x2 / Sage x2 but I think I would have been better off with Ninja x3 and a Devout.

FF3 takes waaaay longer to get to level 99 than the others. I got level 99 in 1 and 4 pretty fast (and 9999 HP in FF2 with the boosts, also fast) but FF3 is like...by the time I did everything there was to do, the party was only like level 70, and it took me a couple hours of just straight grinding in the last area to get to 90ish (and that's AFTER cranking exp up to 4x to go for 99). Almost just went F it, but I'm completing all these so I might as well get it done. FF3 is much longer in general than the rest of the first four. Bestiary is twice as long as one of the others too.

This looks really cool though and I think this new version of FF3 is finally kind of that "bridge" between 1 and 4 in terms of concepts and everything else.

Man, finally done with FF3. Got the platinum at about 17 hours. Rest was maxing out levels, which even cranked up to x4 exp took way too long. Not sure why high levels in FF3 take so much longer than the others. No one even got 9999 HP! I kinda regret bothering to do the level-maxing but at least it's done and I guess it's consistent with the others.

as Mentioned in my last post, bought 1-6 pixel remastered on steam and currently on 2.

fuck I hate this game. Can’t stand the skill leveling system, everything seems way easy and I am not cheating or over farming. And maybe it’s just my perception, but it seems like I encounter a mob every 2 fucking steps so it takes forever to get/go anywhere. And fleeing is stupid because I can kill the fuckers faster than I can flee in many cases.

i also can’t stand this learn phrase and ask people shit mechanic. It’s just plain annoying. anyway, I just killed the giant airship thing so I’m praying to god it’s over soon. Hope 3 is better

for reference, growing up I only played ff1 and then ff7 years later. Never did these middle ones. I also play ffxiv online and I’ll admit it’s neat to see the original version/references to things that are in that game

3 is a lot better. You can see the resemblance with 4 in it. Just glad 3 was the last one that had the uses per tier of magic and went to MP for 4 and up

This makes me sad to be honest, you'll never know the terror of Particle Bean Cannon that a low level run gives you. It even triggers me on FF14's Cloud of Darkness.

I've beaten FF3 on the NES multiple times at middling levels, I know the terror of it. The fact that the boss just spams it is pretty obnoxious. And woe to people who are coming off of clearing the whole dungeon(s) with autosave. The "final dungeon" is basically four dungeons in a row, but you can save after the first one (Labyrinth), then go back outside and save after clearing the second (Eureka). Crystal Tower and Void World have to be done in one shot on the NES though, and that's six bosses in a row. The crystals don't heal you in that version either so whatever items you bring in, that's what you need to sustain you for the whole thing.

Edit: I meant woe to those doing them without autosave. In the new version autosave helps a lot...unless you aren't making manual saves, in which case it'll trap you in the World of Darkness at the end and if you can't beat the final boss you're f-d. Hard to believe anyone would make that mistake in 2023 though.

FF4 done, 15 hours. Getting level 99 in this is very quick compared to FF3. Also five Adamant Armors which wasn't bad either given buyable Sirens and the better drop rate calculations:

20230427_233006.jpg

Took about 50 Sirens to get the first four tails, then around 40 to get the last one which was a bit obnoxious but hey it's way better than the 12 hours I spent trying to get a tail in the SNES version a few years ago where I got all of zero.

Maybe I should give the DS version a go some time? I played it back in the day, but now that I look into it, I didn't beat the superbosses or farm armors or anything. Edit: I beat Geryon but not Proto-Babil, hence my confusion and thinking I did the superbosses. Here I thought I'd done all the superbosses in the series. Yep, now I definitely have to play FF4 DS just for that. Proto-Babil looks like a real test.

20230427_235651.jpg

Kind of co-played FF3 and 4 and went between them over the past 8 days. FF5 next. Excited cause like I said before FF5 is my least-played FF and still feels kind of new.

Final Fantasy IV (3D Remake) is on Steam but by many accounts it was an incredibly lazy port job. There's a file you can grab (or you can hexedit yourself) so that the in-battle FPS isn't locked to 15.

Finished plats on 2 and 3, working on 4 now. 3 was definitely longer and more involved than the prior two, and overall I enjoyed it a bunch. Shame most of the jobs aren’t really useful.

On 4, is it just me or does poison do nothing in battle anymore? It used to erode your hp gradually like the prior games but it does not seem to hurt me. That feels really odd.

I feel like poison (the status effect) was never good in FF4. Bio is very good in FF3 (as a damage spell due to its general neutrality) but it kinda got nerfed for 4, and the actual poison status effect seems to barely work.

First time I remember poison actually doing any appreciable damage was...FF6 I think?

It gets better at some point cause I know the final boss of FF13 is totally obliterated by poison status. Considering how hard people say that fight is...bring poison. I think it did like half the damage over the whole right when I did it.

Just got FFIV 3D on phone this afternoon (which I'm guessing is the steam port) and yeah it's pretty lazy. Good to have a phone game though, been a while. Last time was Dragon Quest 6 back in like Q4 2019. Phone is so convenient of a platform if you don't mind the controls. Either way this version of FF4 is so jank. Turned the difficulty up to Hard cuz I want the real DS level Proto Babil. Dunno when I'll actually do this though. Probably chip at it over time. It's gonna take way more time than the PRs. Octomamm was like a GD superboss fight and harder than anything in FF4 PR, and it's like, the second boss.

Well phone was the worst possible platform you could have picked, maybe you can still get a refund? at least on PC you can speed up the in-battle fps
