Sarah Connor and Ellen Ripley are probably two of the only female characters that I can think of off the top of my head that go through the same transformation, and that's why they're so good and those movies are wonderful.
I know there are some other examples out there, but those are the two that stick out most to me. Doesn't matter that they're female they're just believable characters.

He doesn't talk about it, but for the record, girlbossing done right is Underworld franchise.
Selene is a girlboss. Why it works. One. she is respectful to her elders, and deferential. two. She is actually still feminine. children, men, etc. She reacts to them like a women. She reacts to Kraven like a women. reacts to viktor like a daughter, not a son. even Kraven who is blatantly weaker, and less competent, isn't directly shown up or humiliated by Selene to show how great Selene is. three. the ethics aren't fucked. Selene isn't doing it to be free of responsibly, and do whatever the fuck she wants, and everyone else has to deal with it. Its the opposite. she's doing it FOR other people, for responsibility, for honor. four. she does have personal growth as she learns she's been lied to, and her history is false.

It's not even that complicated.
Sci-fi and fantasy are male dominant genres.
Girls in these films should only be used for eye candy. Underworld works for the same reason resident evil works. Lots of tits and ass on display. We want strippers not girl bosses.
Same with Alien and Terminator. They ran around in their underwear for half the movie. Getting chased by a giant penis head monster.

Also... this is random... but..
Video Games are dominated by men and men consumers, men producers etc. its men for men 90%. Early "men" did a better job at putting women in roles in video games than "womenz" are doing themselves.
Also... more random - the OG Tomb Raider AJ movies are way better than the new movie and the new games... they all popped up on streaming and the AJ TombRaider movies are perfect as much as the og games are- they are what they are and not trying to be more. Movies are better Indiana Jones than the last 2 Indiana Jones.

I'm not sure this explanation works for Ripley considering Sigourney Weaver has never been attractive or feminine and looks an awful lot like dudes with androgen insensitivty syndrome

Go back and watch alien. She spends the entire 3rd act running around in her underwear. And certainly looked pretty good. She definitely wasn't a girlboss. Just the stereotypical last girl/eye candy trope.

They both go through a classic heroes journey in order to survive and fight back. The issue with "strong female characters" of today like Rey etc is the lack of the heroes journey.

Oh absolutely, the "chick running around in her panties part on a spaceship"? That was hot as fuck.
Its just everything from the neck up that was the issue. Great movies, great character, not every actress has to be pretty. Its maybe even better this way. Why would some fashion model looking chick be working on a spaceship? Ripley looked believable in the role.

Well they cast her as the 'hot girl' in ghostbusters too so there were a few people who found her attractive when she was younger.
